My AUII XR8 is now having the same issue of randomly not starting in either Park or Neutral. I have all the lights on the dash light up as normal and I hear a click coming from the cabin fuse panel area.

I've changed the inhibitor switch thinking it was this but still the same. Interesting about the smart shield idea, that one hadn't occurred to me.

Update for mine, wasn't smart shield. I changed inhibitor switch on auto but it turns out the old one was working just fine.
My T bar linkage is out of whack and because of this it slightly turns on the inhibitor switch thus not starting. I have yet to get underneath to readjust / repair the linkage.
