I don't get what the big deal is?
Just because you P platers think that the road is a race track. I've seen you. |

let me first say that i'm glad i got my licence 14 years ago. this business of restricting certain cars is ridiculous. so now the new inexperienced drivers are being forced to drive around in cars with inferior brakes, suspension, safety etc. the ones that are writing themselves off will kill themselves in any car. they are all capable of over 140km/h.
these laws are obviously being made by people with little or no knowledge of cars as well. from what i can gather its o.k. to drive a ba xt 6cyl but not o.k. to drive a ba xr6 and yet they have the same running gear. some magazines have even got better times from the xt. also eb - ef/el1 and vn - vs v8's were pathetic as far as performance and power figures go and there is not a great deal of difference in their performance to many equivelent model 6cyl's, and yet whenever these boffins here 'v8' they all go 'oooooooooh dangerous' and add it to the list of can't have's. maybe instead of banning cars they should introduce some scheme that you have to buy cars with your own money and that you can only borrow a certain amount. also there is always going to be those who claim its a fantastic idea because p platers these days are idiots, and yet if they think back to their first cars and their first years as driving they were probably the same if not worse. |

I sent this today to the NSW RTA
In regards to new P Rule as quoted "Changes to the display of L and P plates on vehicles. L or P plates may no longer be displayed from inside your vehicle. All learner and provisional drivers must clearly display their L and P plates on the front and back of the outside of the vehicle. The letters L and P on the plate must not be hidden. The penalty for incorrectly displayed plates is two demerit points and a fine" Can the RTA please supply me with unlimited license plates to put on the outside of my car, as placing them their leads to them either being stolen or falling off while driving and then being booked for not having plates on. Their is no real reason for having this rule is it absolutly rediclus and in my opinion just another revenue raising tactic by the johny pencil pushers who don't have a clue. Cheers. Wonder if they will reply

I was hoping that Vicroads/the government wouldn't make the same stupid mistakes NSW made with the blanket ban on certain cars because they have a turbo/are V8 etc. One example was a banned Rover 3.5 litre V8 which has around the same power as a current 2 litre 4 cyl and the torque of a small 6 cyl (>3 litre). Power to weight is similar to a Corolla - which as we all know is such a performance beast - NOT
The current Victorian system works fine in that as long as the car isn't over power/weight or capacity/weight limits, it was legal, with a few exceptions I believe. Each car by make was listed and you knew where you stood with the vast majority of cars. The capacity/weight formula helped weed out the older carby V8s with alot of torque but borderline power figures. The new system bans 253 Holden V8s, but not similarly powered 250 I6 Fords. Even later model 6 cylinder engines would outperform 15 year old 5 litre V8 powered cars. I agree with people saying the idiots will continue to write themselves off regardless of the car. I've had a friend squeeze every last ounce of performance from a Datsun 120Y and drive like a lunatic. Just the other day I saw a guy going probably about 60 down a back street into a right hand kink, but he also turned right into a street after that kink at about 60km/h and spun it around - in a 20 year old Laser - in the wet. I was surprised it didn't understeer off into a fence or pole. As for curfews/passenger restrictions, another ridiculous idea. On one hand, they want people not to drink and drive, but then remove the possibility of car pooling and having 1 designated driver - which is a responsible approach. I was driving through South Yarra last night at 2am and a guy who stepped out onto the road to attempt to get a taxi's attention (and was ignored for whatever reason) then he held up his wallet to try and get me to stop and give him a lift in exchange for some cash. I didn't stop - there's a risk of something bad happening to me. So, we already know public transport is a joke and getting a taxi can be difficult to get at night and is expensive. Taking away a young adult's ability to drive at night and take a group of mates along will only compound the problem. At 18, you can vote, fight for your country, work, but not drive at night if this gets implemented (in Vic) Curfews just help governments play with figures - "Look fewer accidents at night" Well that's because there's fewer cars at night and accidents during the day may increase. On top of that, many accidents are caused by excessive speeding, dangerous driving and drink driving, all currently legislated against. How many accidents on the news are reported - "A P-plater driving sober, at, or under the speed limit ran into a pole last night"? A good number of P-platers are capable of driving safely with the right approach - which isn't always the case unfortunately. But it's wrong to effectively penalise a whole age group before they've even done anything wrong. When my eldest sister got her licence, she had 1 year on her P's. The next one also had 1 year. The next had 3 years as did I. The same problems exist - a minority will continue to break the rules and remove themselves from the gene pool and the majority will continue driving for many years to come safely with few if any accidents.
