A demo is a registered car in the name of the dealership it is used for test drives and also driven home by staff. Demo's are usually sold before the reach 7000kms. Yard stock is only ever used for test drives when no demo is available. Very few people actually end up getting a car straight off a boat. if it hasnt been sitting at the dealership its been sitting at a holding yard somewhere.

My Territory was purchased as a demo and we have been quite pleased with it and considering I saved 10g I was real happy. I agree 100km is still new although I wouldn't be all that happy.
Once upon a time I worked for a Holden dealership in Melbourne and took new cars to be registered at Vic Roads this would accumulate Km's. Disturbingly we would swap cars with other dealers and I would drive one over and bring one back to save freight costs I presume. The disturbing part was the odomoter was always disconnected not to record Km's...I took one to Geelong once which is approx 100km from where I was working..no speed camera's those days |

I would be happy with a demo under 200km for a basic model not sports, but for a XR6 T, Gt, SS etc I would buy new, because most likely those cars have been thrashed

Bottom line, no matter how many kms a new car has on it, it may not mean that the car has been treated well. I would rather have a car that has had 100ks on it and has been driven normally, rather than one that is showing 20kms and has been thrashed. Also, with odometers that have been would back I think that it would be better for it to show a genuine figure rather than one that has been would back. This way you know what the car has done, rather than having to guess at how far a car has gone and how it has been treated. |

There is a law about this, I think its about 100 kays for a new car, 2000 for a demo and second hand after that.

Fully agree with the odo turned back. This really should not be possible and I did not think it was possible with the new electronic ones. Should at the very least be illegal. |

i'd be annoyed at more than 50km, and would definately question more than 100. 100km is a fair distance! P.D ,test drive ,tint and fueling up should only use a few km. if it were a 4WD or other with a big build up i'd expect more.
i dont see the need for more than that. it's a NEW car, therefore should not be being test driven by others. if i wanted a demo i'd get a demo and save a few thousand. more of a 'principal' thing. new is new,not sorta new, not driven by a few people, not test driven becasue there were no demo cars available. i'd want some sort of discount if it has been used as an unlicenced 'demo'

My partner and I are looking at a small Hyundai, we found it in the 2nd hand section on carsales, not the new or demo section.
It's a 2007 MY06, not registered and only has 23km's. Does this mean it was built in late 2006 and hasn't been registered or driven since? Does this look a little fishy?

i work for a mazda dealer in sydney. (still a ford fan though)
last 5 delivered all had less then 10km on them. i am not worried unless the car has up to 100km, and that would mean it was on display and driven on test drives. i would also add most people are fairly relaxed on a test drive and are not hard on the cars at all. |

All i have to say is- did you get a discount? if you did how can you complain about 200klm, if you paid full retail you can expect to have a new car delivered under 50k . If you got a deal on the car how can you justify complaining when the dealer compensated with price?

Last week at work a salesman was asking if he could get the instrument cluster changed or wind back the k's on a brand new VW Jetta.. had 84k's on it... abit too much for a brand new car, didn't hear the end result but we couldn't change the instrument cluster due to some immobilizer thingy.... pretty funny seeing he has to deliver the car brand new to a customer today.. I have no idea how the k's got to 84 on a new car. Car didn't have a tint either....
When I do PD's on cars they usually have around 9-15k's max on emm..... Highest ive ever seen that's been delivered is 34k's needed a tint and had a dent that had to be repaired. Last edited by CRN; 05-04-2008 at 09:22 PM. |

Yes - anything more than 15-25 would make you suspicious.
It might be look new, and it might not have been an official demo but anything more than this and the car has been tried by others and in my opinion is not new for you or anyone else. If its not new don't pay new price. The joy of a "new" car is you were first to own, know how it has been treated otherwise you would have bought a demo or low k used. (Having said that some cars / brands road test every car prior to being distributed i.e. porsche - some fords ive seen) |

I had 40ks on mine when I picked it up. They would have had to do abit of driving for tints and detail. If I was going new again anything more than 80 and id refuse it as thats too many.

when i got the suzuki last year it had 7 cliks on it , when i got the patrol this year it had 58 who cares , from new its all warranty and most wont own it out of warranty ,so we feed the second hand market and you can deal with it .... im never gunna change my driving habits so the "next" person gets a great car ,accept my pride and joy which shall never be sold ,so i guess it doesnt bother me . my opinion only ,[ not to be trusted lol]
