Heres my old track, sold it just before Christmas. 4 lanes with computer timing was great fun and I wish I still had it. It's very addictive I was spending a small fortune every week on new cars and 'performance' parts'. Thats when I realised I needed a life :

the first chassis i raced (and kicked azz with) was the famous SLIDING PLUMBER. Brass and piano wire of course. i think the reason why the current generation have pushed the slot cars aside is because when you crash..you have to get up, and move your body to put car back on track. its much easier with PS2/XBOX etc to just push the RESTART/RESET button, and not have to move out of the seating position. also if you like long long straights then you have that little matter of room available if you dont have a seperate entertainment area that you can leave a huge track set up.

Got a set for Christmas in my early child hood.
Loved it however the tracks warped so the metal runners would kink at the joint and throw the cars off. IT was made in the mid 90's guess the quality dropped heaps. It also had some dropper that came with oil, you'd inject it into a hole at the starting line and mount the car on this bracket lifting the back wheels off, and plant the trigger and it'd do "burnouts". God I loved that thing.

Just out of interest has anyone upgraded their scalextric to the new digital version? Supposidly you can run up to 6 cars on 2 lanes and able to switch lanes so you can pull off passing manouvers.

another thunderloop thriller owner here, although mine is tyco, not afx. all stuff is interchangeable though. i dragged it out recently as my daughter is now 8 but no longer have enough bits to make the whole track. it was bought for my brother and me when we were kids so its done the rounds. of course being young males we treated it with utmost respect.

I got given a Scalextric set when I was about 12 by my next door neighbour, the cars were dead, got some new cars and a couple of bits of track and I was hooked, I now (15 years later) have 15 cars and about 40+ meters of track, its not set up atm but i did just buy (last weekend) a new Ninco car-less starter set cause its a nice sized track not hard to set up on the lounge room floor and have a bitta fun with!!! Love my Slotties

Got a Scalextric set when I was 6 back home in England when they were very first released . Had a hump back bridge and a piece of track that could flip the cars over with the push of a button . Came with a Lotus Cortina and a Mini Cooper S . Still have plenty of Scalextiric stuff and bought a couple of sets for my 2 sons ( god its good having sons ) , " but darling its for the boys " . From 1970 I raced " Proper " slot cars at Geoff and Daphne Cowells G&D raceway in Parramatta , then at Dave Myles track at Seven Hills and went on until Gary Bennets track in Jamisontown closed down in the early 90's . I have literally hundreds and hundreds of trophies and represented Australia in Switzerland in the 80's . Sadly a hobby in severe decline with the only surviving track in Sydney now at waitara . In the 60's there were over 200 slot cars tracks in Sydney all doing a booming trade . If I ever win lotto I am building a big shed with a replica of G&D's original track , Seven Hills track and Jamisontowns aswell as a King Cobra . Have raced over the years group 10's , group 12's , group 15's , group 20's , group 27's , opens , inline womps , angle womps , 36D's , flexicars , hard bodies , models and a few that dont immediately fall to mind . Loved every second of it and had an absolute ball .

scalextric....... obviously being a Pom...!!
Goodness know what'd it'd be worth now. Ran extra power booster because the track was so long.... approx 45 cars. Old Stock cars set to drift on slicks were my favorite. I remember oiling the tyres for more slippage !! Happy days !! |

Considdering as wrongwaynorris said its a hobby on the decline there is a track down here in Dandenong, Victoria and the joint is a mad house. Good luck if you wanna get in there on a weekend its always packed. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights they are open till 9pm and from about 4.30-9.00 its mental. Its great to see something like that bringing so many people together for a bit of fun!

Yes...but did not work a lot of the time...brushes would not always work...
Knowing the sort of upbringing I had, it was probably the cheapest set in the store...but still good fun...still grateful

I have Scalextric, AFX/HO/Tyco and 1:43 scales (the battery opperated stuff converted to AC).
1:32 Scales: 6 Scalextric sets. 53 Cars (mostly Fords). Heaps of extra track. A few cars that have been built from 1:32 static model kits. The homemade cars have regulated voltage lighting with brake lights (comes on when you lift your finger) and the motors mounted in the front over the pickup and driveshaft to the rear gears. Custom 0v to 35v transformer packs. HO Scales: 8 AFX sets, 3 Tyco sets, 2 HO sets. Heaps of extra track. No idea how many cars (lots). A few home moulded bodies from high impact resin (AU Falcon DJR V8 Supercar, EL Falcon DJR V8 Supercar, Cortina TE, Escort Coupe, Escort Cosworth, Ford GT-40). Custom 0v to 35v adjustable transformer packs. 1:43 Scales: 4 Sets plus several boxes of extra track. Custom 0v to 12v transformer packs (these used to run on 4x "D" cells). I did have these built into a permanent layout for the kids. To solve the the quick wearing pickups on the AFX/HO cars we would make up pickup shoes. Simply it's a coffee tin cut into strips then small sections folded around the pickup in the contact area. Reshape the pickup so it would run flat again and Bob's you're uncle. No more worn out pickups. When the shoe was worn out, prise it off and fit another. Then I discovered radio control, but that's a whole nother obsession.

I had a slot car set when I was a young fella…
I remember my old boy would always bring me home cool new cars…I now realise it was because he enjoyed it as much as me! My favourite would’ve been a black Trans Am, looked like the car from smokey and the bandit. He also used to buy cheap matchbox type cars…gut them and then fix the body to the slot car chassis. Had to be the cheap ones because they were lighter.
