Doesn't that have some truth in it though? Not to that extent but along the right lines.

Thats why people should be doing the speed limit when they enter and merge with traffic.

I'd prefer to think we are home to car enthusiasts, as a hobby we take more notice of what happens on the road and how we deal with it. Generally we love our cars and make sure they are in good working order as well making them look good. We are educated in driver safety with many taking part in track days for performance and defensive skill enhancement.

This of course is the opposite end of the spectrum to many "average drivers". To them cars are merely transport, day after day they turn the key and put the boot in (many with a cold engine) then wonder why the engine fails before it's time and write into cars guide complaining brand X is crap and they will purchase brand Y next time.

They do not care about their car or yours (shopping trolley dings anyone ?) all they want to do is get to work as soon as possible and drive accordingly with little regard to what goes on around them, too busy doing makeup/texting/bookwork etc... whilst on the road to care about speed matching or moving over for a faster vehicle coming behind.

The point is I'd like to believe us enthusiasts of all brands take a little more care than Joe Average wearing his cardigan in the Camry with the champagne duco.

Agreed on the merging...there are a lot of drivers who are hopeless at it.

Another one is the lane shifters, who go from the right lane to the far left lane then back to the right lane etc. Usually done without using indicators.

Arrghhh I'm road raging just thinking about it !

Really hate the people who don't merge at speed. Been plenty of instances where you are driving on an onramp and they brake and stop because they want to do X amount of kays under the speed limit, thus causing a major jam.

Also had plenty of instances where people already on the road will speed up and thus cut those off trying to merge. The stupidity of it is that if you let people in one for one it is actually faster for all.

Lucky for me my car has the power to handle most of these people so long as I have the space to do so safely but it's a major PITA when you don't.

Posted speed limits are maximum speed limits you can drive up to 110 on the freeways you don't have to do 110 if you don't want to as long as you say in the left lane. and on a single lane road with 100 speed limit you can sit on whatever speed you like up to 100 with in reason .

Whats the general consensus with classic cars on a freeway? I was driving on eastlink this arvo and there were 3 192-30's style classic cars doing 60-70km/h in the left lane, whilst it was great to see them on the road they were nothing more than a mobile speed hump to some.

They did the right thing as in staying in the left lane but on the other hand is 30-40k under the limit too much?

Yes thats true but if its a clear day road is fine and you're doing 80 in a 100 zone, well perhaps you dont belong on the road at all. Short of inclement weather, there is no excuse to hold up traffic like that, to me you are a mobile chicane, and if I'm not in the work car I'll lay on the horn as I fly past.

Today I was driving along the Eastern Freeway near Burke Rd, and I was almost coming up to pass a car when they indicated to change lanes. Now I could see they were making room for traffic coming onto the freeway. I ended up making a choice of making a quick check and moving to the right lane to make way for the person making way for someone else. If I didn't I'd have to brake or I'd be inches from their bumper. Don't need to change lanes for merging traffic, just make room for the car slightly ahead. That way they don't need to mess up traffic in the next lane too. Besides, the person entering the freeway should be watching the traffic and positioning themselves to enter in front or behind the nearest car, not running door to door with 50 metres to the end of the merge lane.

Also, perhaps the onus is on the merging car sometimes, Im happy to let them in, but I'm sick of waiting 30 seconds and slowing down 50km/hr because the driver is too stupid to realise that I am in fact making a gap for them.

I agree that if it's going to disrupt the steady flow of traffic in the other lanes, then changing is probably not the best choice to make. Then again you do get people who would prefer to change lanes than slow down if the option is there.

You know what grinds my gears?
You are driving along on the highway, things are going nice and traffic is moving as it should, then all of a sudden, everyone is braking, cars are slowing down all over the place, and you think the worst has happened somewhere up ahead. You then sit in crawling or stop start traffic for 20 minutes, watching the traffic pile up behind you as far as the eye can see, and fume quietly to yourself, particularly if you drive an older vehicle with only windows for air conditioning (don't get me wrong, I love my '62 Fairlane, but it's a tad uncomfortable in high summer when you are stopped in the blazing sun).

Eventually, the traffic crawls forward and then suddenly, everyone speeds up and takes off! There is no sign of an accident, and then you realise some fackwit up approximately 200 cars ahead has slowed down to gawk at
a) some poor buggerchange a tyre
b) some girl standing next to her car yakking on a mobile phone
c) a speed camera vehicle on the side of the road
d) a vehicle that has broken down being loaded onto a tilt tray (not an accident)

There is absolutely NO REASON for them to slow down one bloody bit as long as the vehicle/person is off the road and the usual caution about driving past people etc at 100km/hr, but there's always someone who has to practically come to a standstill to have a good rubberneck, and this causes a chain reaction of people slamming on the brakes to do the same thing, or wondering why the cars in front are hitting the anchors and then so on down the line.

It drives me crazy-A-bonkers, and I hate these people with the heat of a thousand blazing hot suns about to go supernova.

If your attention span is that short, and you have absolutely no ability to just maintain your highway speed, get off the highways. Your stupidity causes a massive chain reaction for kilometers that affects hundreds of other drivers, but you are blind and blissfully unaware of the mess you leave behind.

And this to the nth degree more for those vultures who feel the need to stop and stare at a car accident that could have resulted in injury or death. Just don't. If the police and emergency services are already there, unless you are an off-duty trauma specialist, keep bloody going, and have some common decency.

Rant over. I think I need an aspirin now. Grrrrr!

Ah, spoken like a true "get out of my way I have to be in front" driver.

Did you know that there are actually people who like driving along at 80kmh. Not everyone wants to drive at the MAXIMUM PERMITTED speed limit! I drive 900ks a day, 5 days week on single lane highways and have to put up with drivers like this every day. Along with Caravans, Headers and oversize loads doing around 20kmh.

It's called sharing the road, and if you cant handle it maybe you're the one who doesn't belong on the road or need a course on controlling 'road rage'.

Drivers with your attitude we can all do without.

Yeah, maybe you're right. However, seeing as though 90% of the people on the road want to do the MAXIMUM PERMITTED speed limit perhaps these people who "like" driving at 80km/hr should get out of the ***** WAY!
I should add that when it comes to trucks, caravans and loaded up cars and trailers, that I dont get that angry and can understand them not being able to do the speed limit.

Let people on to the freeway, do not speed up to close a gap so they cannot merge, especially trucks, let them in, they cannot slow and speed up like cars.

And most importantly, KEEP LEFT unless overtaking.

Angry Tailgaters!!!!

The F3
Just before the Ourimbah servo
Some genius thinks it's cool as hell to tailgate/honk horn/flash lights because I'm in the right hand lane doing 120 while to the left of me is a line of 6 cars just having merged from the onramp.
Genius in Pajero (co incidence?) then passes me as soon as,and I mean AS SOON AS, the last car on the left is passed not even giving me time to merge left which I had planned to do anyway as I needed go go juice.
While passing this idiot flashes some form of I.D/badge at he's window and extends he's middle finger.
I wave back and giggle visibly at the irate ****eronwheels.
A few minutes later I pull into the station at a pump and who do you think serves to pull up an inch behind me at the pump?
MR PAJERO
Mr Pajero is all of 5ft tall and a 50kgs dripping wet but my oh my he's all puffy chest tapping on my boot and pointing.
There's a very nice girl next to me filling up her hairbrush on wheels who throws me a 5 second courtesy flirt as I exit my vehicle to expose my sleeved up 6 ft 300lbs self and inform Mr Pajero quietly that if he doesn't settle down he's going to cause a fight and if he's not careful it'll be with me.
I fill up.
He's in the line 3 people behind me talking to he's fat & ugly wife about slow drivers very audibly and as I get to the counter the comments turn to immortal lines like "he pays like an old woman too" which serves to illicit a giggle from Miss Cashier.
I simply whisper to her "pajero drivers" and she LOLs.
I pick up my marlboros and strawberry milk and as I exit the store contemplate dropping the shoulder into this guy but decide on discretion.
En route back to the pump the idea to deflate he's tyre crosses my mind but the smart guy in m decides this could be unsafe.
It's kind of late and empty so I sit in my car and sip some milk & adjust the jatz for a few more hours motoring.
Horn honks

I get out and let fly with a 30 second barrage at this guy and to my amusement he swiftly locked he's door

20 minutes later who do I see by the roadside?
Mr Pajero stopped by the green unmarked XR8 that used to roam the F3!

Not an isolated incident.During the 80kmph roadworks section , where it's one lane, I've had professional F1 drivers tailgate and the like because heaven forbid I'm doing 80 in the highly patrolled single lane roadworks section.

In closing some people don't deserve cars.
The road is not yours it's ours.
Think a little bit about the traffic & conditions.Driver courtesy goes a long way in road safety

absolutely. patience is a rare thing on the road. so you have to slow down for a bit.. whats it going to cost you? 1min? 2min? even 10min? everyone's always in a hurry and had to be there yesterday. plan your trip better so you aren't racing the clock all the time.

also people who complain about cars that speed up when they catch up to them, a lot of this could be the fact that suddenly another car being there has drawn there attention back to their speedo and they realise they have eased off a fraction and speed up accordingly.

Gaso - many people on here would never survive in your line of work.

All too true, except:
Quote:
move right to let them in.
When it disrupts the traffic flow in the next lane because they are travelling slower than the traffic in that lane. Mindless really, they dont want to slow down or speed up a little themselves to make a gap for the merging vehicle so they disrupt the next lane.

The main reason for the apathy is the lane system here that actually encourages driving in the right lanes, because of the left lanes being continually disrupted by vehicles entering and leaving the freeway, and lanes ending. Other countries like England have the lanes so that the vehicles driving in the left lane do not need to worry about merging traffic, the entering traffic enter on their own new lane. Its the rightmost lanes that close.

Well that there are idiots out there should come as no surprise to anyone.

I do a lot of country driving and share your pain 4Vman. My favorites are;

To cruise down the freeway cruise set at 112kph indicated, which is 109kph on the GPS, (in a 110 zone, no fines her)e. That keeps me rolling along slighty faster than most.

But time after time I'll come across 2 cars, one in each lane, travelling at the same speed, without another car for hundreds metres, like a rolling road block. I can then spend the next 10km sitting and waiting for the car in the RH lane to look in their mirror and move over. And when they do they are usually cranky. I dont tailgate. Funny thing is when they eventually let me through, I pull to the left as you are supposed to then they remember and follow suit. For the record If the traffic is heavy i dont care i'll sit and wait, but if there is plenty of roo, its just good manners.

the other is;

Travel down a single lane country road, with few if any passing places at 85~95kph behind someone, you see the sign overaking lane 1km and think great, here is an opportunity. Then 200m before the road widens for the overtaking lane, bang the're off. Doing 110kph long the widened section and your stuck with the decision, do I do 130 to get past this nitwit or stay behind, because you know when the road narrows its back to 85...

I drive from brisbane to ipswich and out to a country town called lowood each day. all of the above irritates me but the scary thing are drivers who have no idea of what their car or the road is capable of.

The amount of times i've been on the outside of a sweeping corner only to be confronted with an oncoming hyundai, camry, P plater, obese soccer mum in a pajero etc at full tilt, underpressured outside front tyre nearly peeling off the rim creeping over the double white line, unable to keep it to the inside and unwilling to take the foot off.

It's put my heart in my throat a few times. There's not a lot worse than knowing you are inches away from unsurvivable collision.

What really annoy's me is people who can't drive straight (can't stay in their lane) and people who overtake you then slow down

also people who complain about cars that speed up when they catch up to them, a lot of this could be the fact that suddenly another car being there has drawn there attention back to their speedo and they realise they have eased off a fraction and speed up accordingly.

Gaso - many people on here would never survive in your line of work.
GasOlane has made a good point. Certainly the amount of time you lose at 80km/h for a few kays (till able to pass, overtaking lane etc.) is not great and i certainly would not do some unsafe overtaking manouever just to get 'clean air'.

BUT, the original point still stands. In america, the cops can and do pull up drivers for doing well below the posted limit. If you get stuck behind some guy doing 80km/h for no justifiable reason (towing, large load, weather, road surface etc.) in an 100-110kmh zone you have to ask the question....how bad a driver are you mate?

On a recent trip to FNQld in my sisters LR zetec focus (hardly a powerhouse but it gets along) i came across alot of slow vehicles for a range of reasons. Bit of patience, no prob. But just occastionally you'd get some person who clearly (and the low speed was but on piece of evidence) should not be on the road, and certainly not on the highwy at 100 clicks. Often older drivers but some young ladies as well. FFS you can NOT justify doing 75kmh in a 110km/h zone at midday, sunny weather, on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Rockhampton.....

I came accross an older gentleman doing this after entering the highway from a rural property in the middle of knowwhwere...i was the only other car in sight!!!!. He took an eterntity to get up to speeds and i was so taken aback after driving for nigh on 45 mins with no other cars around i nearly didn't slow down enough!!!

Thankfully with no traffic i could ovrtake on the flat road but in other situations i had to grin and bear it for a good 5-10ks as cars perfectly capable in the hands of any decent drive could to 100+ did anywhere from 60-80? You say 'why not just slow down and wait', well equally, 'why go so damn slow?' Only reason would be gross driver ineptitude no?

Sorry for the rant guys but if i'm in a 97kw focus and i'm being held up by a 190kw FG rental with a USELESS tourist at the wheel surely something is amiss no? Yes that did happen...how does 70km/h for 10 minutes in a 100 zone around gympie sound......

THis is a classic one. When on rural roads that have 'overtaking lanes' you ned to make use of them. So when you are in the 'overtaking' bit you need to get it done adn then get back over so anyone behind that wants to push a bit more can get past you too. I was behind a pajero, and we were both following a removal truck and after coming to an overtaking lane both of us passed it. I moved to the left immediatley after as two FG falcons (seemed to be in convoy) looked like they wanted to get a wriggle on and i knew that they would have to pass me later since for the preceding 15 mins they had slowely gained on me (you can see a few kay behind on flat rural qld roads...)in the 110 zone (i suspect they were doing 115-120 i was peged at 107km/h true speed since the focus did not like cruising any faster Re fuel burn...).

Sure enough, that pajero stayed right there in the right lane at barely the speed limit. Soon enough, one of the FG went for it, swung into the 'keep left' lane, went like hell and got back around the pajero (just) before the land ran out. I slowed up in the left lane in case the other falcon wanted to try the same thing (let him in to get around the pajero) but the more conservative lady driver was not up for it. we both sat behind the pajero for another 5 minutes before the second falcon overtook it and sped off to try and catch its mate LOL!

I passed that pajero a further 5 mins later becuase the distracted middle aged family man couldn't maintain 105kmh in it.....yeah....good work buddy GRRR!!!! :

MERGING.
Well here are the facts (well for Vic anyway), however as with everything, there is also and element of commonsense mixed with some common courtesy that should also be applied.

FROM: http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...eways.htm#rule + A few other things.

Entering a freeway
When entering a freeway, you are effectively changing lanes (across the dotted white line) and you must give way to vehicles already travelling on the freeway.

There are traffic lights at some freeway entrances to control the flow of vehicles onto the freeway when the traffic is heavy. When operating, the lights will change quickly, so that when the light is green only one vehicle in each lane will be able to enter the freeway.

Keeping left
When driving on any multi-lane road with a speed limit over 80km/h, you must keep out of the right lane unless you are overtaking, turning right, or if all lanes are congested. If there is a transit lane, this rule also applies to lane immediately to the left of the transit lane.

Stopping
You must not stop on a freeway except in an emergency and only in the emergency lane. Buses and taxis can sometimes use the emergency stopping lane when signs allow it.

Transit lanes
During times specified on the signs, transit lanes are for buses, taxis, motorcycles, trams and vehicles carrying two or more people (T2 sign), or three or more people (T3 sign). You may drive in a transit lane for up to 100 metres if it is necessary to make a turn.

Rule references
Road Safety Road Rules 2009

130 Keeping to the left on a multi-lane road
148 Giving way when moving from one marked lane or line of traffic to another marked lane or line of traffic
177 Stopping on a freeway
178 Stopping in an emergency stopping lane

I've had to floor it and undertake them in these tiny gaps a few times, not without sitting back patiently initially waiting for kays on end mind you, it is a last resort move brought on from pure frustration and opportunity.

Maybe I'm too impatient but god it sh$^%s me.
Yeah when I was in Perth I noticed that. Seems just past South street heading towards Manduarh is the worst, suddenly it seems everyone goes from 100 to 85. I was doing 100 in the right lane all the way till south street, then I was at 85 till armadale rd where I got off. This happened 3 times while I was there. Also just as I leave town a black 300C overtakes me at 130kph and speeds off into the distance, well lol at him and his impatience, because 300km on and 2 stops later I overtook him. Just proves that speeding doesn't get you anywhere faster.

Caravans are the worst and people who go around he caravan in a 500m overtaking lane, but don't accelerate to the speed limit. So you either wait, or squeeze in so as not to get stuck.
