I was taught at school that the measurement of Newton metres come from the amount of twisting force exerted by 1 newton of force over a 1m lever arm.

A newton is the amount of force required to accellerate 1 kg at a rate of 1 second per second.

Where did the name from, well that would be Isaac Newton, the man who discovered all this clever stuff.

So, you are incorrect, the reference to New Town is completely off the mark

i've always sung the praises of fifth gear and gone against the 'TOP GEAR RULES MAN' grain that exists on the internet.

Tif is a very good driver and knows his stuff
Jason is an ex champ and holds his own with tif very well
Vicki is a nutbag and can certainly steer well.
Tom is 5th gear's version of James May, but he's a giggle

It's a shame it was canned, but the majority of yokels prefer the scripted 'hilarity' of Top Gear, so ratings rule.

I think the origin of the name Newton came before Isaac Newton and his laws of physics. Since the name Newton came about after 1066 AD, and Isaac Newton wasn't born until 1643.....

1500 years ago a group of Scottish highlanders ground up some wild wheat mixed it with water and used it to hold a lump of rotting meat while they ate it. The ancient gaelic words for "I feel like spewing" are "muck dawn awlde".

You sure that's not 10 Newtons required to move 1KG at 1m/s?
I think you'll find that 1 Newton = 1/9.8kg force, or 0.98kg force.

I don't want to make an argument because I didn't research it; this is from my days at school studying physics.

1 Newton of force to accelerate 1kg of mass at 1 metre per second per second in a completely theoretical and frictionless (and zero resistance) environment. 1N = 9.8kg, you are correct I just said roughly 10kg. Pretty sure it is 1 Newton of force, not 10.

I like all the different car shows they all have their good and bad points. Fifth gear is more car oriented than TG, TG is all about cars and humor much like the footy show talks footy but has you in tears with the BS they spin, I think all these shows have a place but obviously TG will appeal to a broader public as its not all about cars

Fifth gear has always been the more technical, clinical of the two shows largely due to the credibility of the drivers employed. Tiff and Vik are exceptional drivers and Jason a class act in his own right.

The problem for me is that sometimes cars can be too clinical, too good and what you get from Top gear is that they hit at the entire relationship of car ownership, not simply which is best. Sometimes the best car isn't the one they would buy and I appreciate and really relate to it.

The spirit, the essence of Topgear, is about a chemistry of three presenters that embodies car ownership, automotive love that surpasses steel and rubber. It’s a boyish fascination of speed and power that is entertaining. Its irreverent, it’s politically incorrect in an age that smacks of how dare they.

It’s successful in ways that represent an unspoken notion that sometimes too much goodness in the world is surely enough and that sometimes character plays just as important part.

The road trips are epic and for me a highlight. Road trips rule in so many ways. The best one is still to come this season and I hope Nine don’t edit it.

Five Alive! Fifth Gear reportedly set to return in April... with some changes

Fans of British car shows take heart. Nope, we're not talking about Top Gear, but it's cross-town rival Fifth Gear. The Channel 5 car show that picked up after the original Top Gear was canceled was itself the victim of cutbacks recently. In the face of reduced viewership (compared to the five million who watch Top Gear regularly) and reduced ad revenue from belt-tightening automakers, network executives canceled the show back in October. By December, however, sources indicated that there was still a heartbeat and a glimmer of hope.

Now reports suggest that, following an outpouring of support, the network has agreed to keep Fifth Gear alive, albeit with some changes. The new Fifth Gear will apparently leave the studio permanently to focus directly on the test drives in a bid to lure hard-core enthusiasts disgruntled with Top Gear's decided emphasis on shenanigans. Two of the six presenters – Tom Ford and Tim Shaw – have also been dropped, leaving Vicki Butler-Henderson, Jonny Smith, Tiff Needell and Jason Plato to present the show.

With the revised format, Fifth Gear has reportedly been approved for two more seasons, with the first starting only a month away in late April, beating Top Gear's late-summer return to the punch. Apparently the Discovery network has been contracted to broadcast the show in other European markets outside the UK, so here's hoping we'll get the shows Stateside as well.
