Totally agree.

To OP the AU XR8's were such a good thing there is no way in the world you would sell one for a Boss 260, a backward step imo, no offence intended to BA V8 owners.

The last of those Windsors is too good to replace, unless it was with a Coyote.
As an overall package the AU is one superb vehicle with plenty of character, performance and road manners.

Good luck in your search.

Personally I'd go for BA on looks alone.

Sound; they both sound great, but I have a thing for the Boss' music.

Handling: If I was on a racetrack I'd care. SCUD, will you be punting this everywhere you go, or just cruising along?

Power: Are you going to mod? Off-idle and through the mid-range the 220 is the better place to be.

AU3 all the way. I have an Au1 and I wouldn't swap it for a BA.

I hate having to use this card but why did the ford move to a 5.4 again?

What did holden release that obliviated the windsors and needed the big brother 5.4 to stop years of having sand kicked in ford faces?

the au xr is a great var but lets call a spade a spade. It is what it is and isnt what it isnt

5.4 came in because Windsors were on the way out globally IIRC...just the same as the 5.4 was replaced by Miami...the 5.4 is a Frankenstein motor.

LS1 was a good engine minus its hunger for oil early on....what other options did FoA have at the time..none really..apparently the 4.6 was not up to the task in NA form.

So yeah, the 5.4 is a spade, or better known as an anchor.

If its just a weekend cruiser it even strengths the AU's case.

No Way come on brother! The only reason why Ba's hit on the map was because if the XR6T's, nothing to do with the V8. Sure performance wise the turbos flogged both the 5.0L and 5.4L. But bud, the 5.4L did not flog the GenIII's by any means.

The 5.4's where just as effective to the GenIII's as was the Windsors...

Lets take it easy on the 5.4...
Doing track days up here in at about 37c + track temps,
my BOSS 260 goes all day without a hiccup, my mates 2010 SSV Redline (stock) had to keep coming in early due to his oil temps being to high!!

I did say Id take a BF..in Toxic actually.

Im sure we can all give accounts for certain engines having issues at particular times. We have to talk generally otherwise we would be here for an eternity.

Perhaps budgeting an alloy block in a 5.4 purchase would help. Its just to "lead tipped arrow" for me..and thats not taking into account other B series issues.

Really come back when you get an idea, or are you on school holidays?
Actually heres an idea go back over to LS1 and beg for your account to be reinstated.
All of your posts on the AU are YOUR opinion, simple. Dont try and push your opinion onto anyone and in particular someone who is asking for some info. Your biased rubbish is getting tiring. (There is a reason you have warnings for AU bashing). Your posts add nothing to anything.

To the OP go and drive both and go from there, i guess what you want out of the car is what you need to decide. I love the AU and if it were me id go that route as ive owned a couple now. Ive never owned a BA but spent a bit of time behind the wheel of a few and it wasnt for me but each to their own.

Yeah fair point, i'm just a little over hearing ppl ragging on the
ol BOSS motor, yeah fair enough to start off with they were no good,
but that's like the first of any new series of car pretty much.
Anyway.. No harm done, Did i mention i miss my old AU?? :(

Mate S3 + Blueprint = very noice!

Windsor vs 5.4 is interesting, at the end of the day the negs and positives for both would probably end up being equal...it would depend on what that person wants to achieve.

In saying that, the OP states $15k...that money gets you a rough BA1 or a nice AU3; thats where it ends IMO.

If it was like $20k and BF/BF2 then I would probably go with the BOSS for the "normal" person. I would look at that scenario and buy a $10k AU2/3 XR8 and built a 5.6....hehe

Yeah i absolutely agree, and with the op's current budget the AU III
is definitely the way to go.

To the OP - best you drive both and make an assessment.

If it were me choosing between two models of vehicles the criteria would be , in this order

1. Exterior styling
2. Power
2=. Handling
4. Reliability
5. Interior comfort and layout

IMO The AU fails on no. 1 above so the rest become irrelevant.

That criteria listing is for me . However I considered an AU for my P plater son recently with the criteria changing so that Reliability became No 1 which I believe the AU does have an edge over BA.

There's some harsh criticisms of the BA on here, especially on the BA interior, but thats OK we're all entitled to an opinion.

Personally I didn't like the boss. Nothing that couldn't be fixed with diff gears etc but the possibility of an expensive rebuild hanging over my head finally turned me towards a turbo. I stuck with that for a while and when I went for another eight it was a windsor powered car due to fond memories of my AU. Still say the AU was the best/most reliable car I've ever owned. Cheap and easy to stuff around with the windsor and have a bit of fun too. Aftermarket heads, cam, etc...

A good mate if mine owned a au xr8 ute 220kw... He traded it in for a ba xr8 ute..

I asked him how the ba xr8 goes in comparison.. his words verbatim are... "It would flooooooog it" big emphasise on flog. He really couldn't beleive how much difference there was.

Sure the au holds its own down low and mid range but when push come to shove its the 5.4 which darts away.

Yeah fair enough, my local Herrod guy blew his XR6T's Turbo doing track days
up here, in the kind of temps i previosly mentioned, so imo the BF MkII BOSS
is a winner in my books..

To the op, definietly worth a browse, http://aufalcon.com.au/cgi-bin/index.cgi

comparing a 200kw ute to a boss 260 is a stupid comparison. Does he realise by the time the power kicks in with the BOSS, the AU already has car-lengths of jump on him? Your posts are so ignorant it's (not) funny.

I love both of them. I find the BA a better looking XR8, and they drive nicely but lack punch off the line, and that's what i look for in a car. By the time the revs build up you're already in trouble.

The AU has better handling, better punch off the line, and is easier to throw around.

But i'd have either.

When you test drive both take it on a decent road and take a few corners at speed. You'll quickly see the strengths and weaknesses of both models.

Sure the au holds its own down low and mid range but when push come to shove its the 5.4 which darts away.
If I was an AU zealot I'd say you're lying too, but fact is even VT2 SS owners - people I've met face to face, not on the internet - have pretty good things to say about the 260.

The main point of this thread is we give our opinions without turning it into something SCUD didn't want - a **** fight between BA and AU fanatics.
