I'm a tad surprised, however leading sales charts doesn't necessarily equal good profits.

I'd be putting my money on the next gen Impala as the Commodore's replacement - it's going to be revealed very soon at the New York Auto Show.

Here's a teaser: http://www.autoblog.com/2012/03/21/n...-via-facebook/

Terrible news, I was counting on Commodore to be around after Falcon's demise. Oh well, Chrysler 300C to the rescue!

Well, at least they're keeping their manufacturing facilities open. The Commodore always was an American parts bin special anyway (VE excepted) so it's replacement won't be much different in that regard.

My thoughts too. The idea to stop Commodore is to save on development cost and dip into something that is already designed. We will just adapt a few dampers, trim levels, rejig the models and away you go.

Remember, Ford Falcon started in the US in 1960 and we built it here from full US development.

The 300 is an import and doesn't need to sell in volume here to cover its R&D like Falcon/Commodore, it won't be going anywhere. Chrysler will have the large RWD market to themselves. If initial reviews are anything to go by, the new 300 will be a good thing.

Hopefully Holden will have much success with the Commodores replacement. Aussie jobs are more important then wishing thousands out of work so one American company can beat the other in a sales race much of Australia, let alone the world don't care about.

The idea that Holden can never make a profit is equally silly. Besides the silence from Ford on post 2016 is deafening, so apparently the make less, make more money theory isn't working out as well as some on here rabbit on about. You can only cost cut to a point, after that you either sustain your market and look for growth or you start winding things up.

The best outcome is both companies make cars in Australia and sell more of them and if they can or even if they try, we should cheer both companies on for going for it.

oh, they'll have no problem doing that. it'll be an american car that is actually australian and all that bull. of course it'll be 'designed' here and since they are bolting them together, it'll be "built" here.

There was some early talk of the Camaro coming here still badged as a Chev, this may be a more likely option now IF Holden abandon any further RWD mid-large sized sedan.

If a SRT8 can be cheaper than a FPV or HSV, surely the range topping Camaro could be imported especially with the high aussie $$

SRT model is currently here in OZ ready for compliance checks. Can't be driven on our roads until that is done. Same with the SRT Jeep GC.

I'm looking forward to getting a spin in both, can't wait to try out the SRT 300 with the 8spd next year. The current transmission is its only real Achilles heal.

I'm not sure why you are all jumping with joy. It's a bit sad really.

The Commodore is gone, but so is the Falcon (you can bet houses on it). Two Aussie cars with heaps of racing heritage that won a spot in many Aussie hearts.....gone. Replaced by FWD camry competitors.

Yee hah woo hoo....what a bunch of twits.

2017 is the year of the Apocalypse.
Commodore = Gone.
Falcon = Gone.
Gonna buy up thirty used Falcons of Ebay so i have something to drive for the next 40 years.
Gonna be a bit like Mad Max really.

i think the sales charts are a pretty good indication that many (most) buyers no longer care which wheels drive the car.

as for post 2016, there is nothing stopping ford or holden continuing the falcon and commodore nameplates.

it is also not confirmed which wheels will drive the cars. people look at the current crop of vehicles instead of what might be in 4 years time.
