There's no way I'm going to fly in airliners now if the LAME's (aircraft maintenance engineers) working on them don't even see the massive tanks and spray equipment. If they can't see them then there's no way they'll see cracks and loose fittings!

I honestly thought there was more intelligence in this forum than to even start to believe in this chemtrails rubbish.

Too many conspiracy morons (mainly in America) who think the water vapour coming out of a high flying jet is the same as the chemicals coming out of a crop duster twenty feet up.

Also, do people honestly think vapour droplets released over ten kilometers up are going to fall straight down to the ground below...? Not heard of wind drift?
There's a reason lunatics in cropdusters that are basically a big engine with wings attached fly ten feet above the ground when crop dusting, instead of doing it from an airliner ten kilometers above the ground...


One clear night out here the atmospheric conditions were right to produce the vapour trails (because the air is sometimes too dry for it to happen), and the full moon was just overhead. There happened to be a couple of airliners pass within an hour or so, and it left these beautiful lit up lines of contrails across the sky, illuminated by the moonlight...wonderful sight.

It's. Not. True. Full stop...for christs sake, people...listen to a bit of science instead of whackos who wouldn't know a basic law of physics from thier elbow. Hot air leaves the back of the jet engine, if there's enough water vapour in the cold air it goes into, it condenses, a short distance behind the jet. Look at the steam leaving the neck of a kettle when it's boiling and you see the exact same effect, and that's all it is.

You see more these days than when you were a kid? Hmm...could that possibly, just maybe, be because jet air travel is extremely common nowadays, with hundreds of times more flights now in a given period than there used to be twenty or thirty years ago?

Sorry for the essay, I find conspiracy theories interesting.

In addition to the above, if you spend your time looking for a conspiracy you'll eventually find something to support it (whether it's something credible or not is another matter). People say they see more 'chemtrails' now than when they were a kid, probably because they either weren't looking for them as a child, or have heard something suggestive in the meantime which now puts chemtrails on the mind when they cast their eyes skywards and exercise their right to confirmation bias.

I was recently watching BBC's show 'Conspiracy Roadtrip' and was struck by the way different people can interpret information. A group of 9/11 conspiracy believers had just been taken to meet with the head of air traffic control on duty on the day, and after asking him questions, actually left the meeting strengthened (by what he said) in their belief in a government cover up. They had been listening for things he said that matched their view and discarded the rest. The host, and I'm sure most viewers, came away with a different message.

Psychologists tell us that we all have to engage in a process of interpretation and selective listening because we need to make the deafening barrage of information coming at us more manageable. But further than that we can have politics and general worldview and personality (such as entrenched suspicion against authority) influencing what we see. If we strongly believe something but science supports the 'opposition's' case, then it's easier to just dismiss the science than change your mind, which can be very disruptive and is perhaps quite threatening. From what I've read some people are inherently much more suspicious than others, likely due to our early human history which required a spectrum of personalites and politics to maintain a robust society.

We see this re-interpretation, selective listening and suspicion all the time with sensitive topics like climate change and evolution, where the science is clear but people hold really strong political and religious views. These topics then become a breeding ground for conspiracy theories. I think the physicist Lawrence Krauss put it well - "physics is not conservative or liberal, it's just physics." The scientific method, while not perfectly flawless, is by far the best tool we have to eliminate these biases.

The Occam's Razor principle says that if you have a range of different hypotheses, the one most likely to be true is the one that makes the least assumptions. Which is more likely for the case of chemtrails: the one that says that to account for the observed data you need a huge hidden global conspiracy and support structure for which no evidence has yet come to light; or a well-documented, well understood and observable set of physical laws?

I'm sure I've seen old pictures of B-29's leaving contrails...

As technology improves and air travel grew, aircraft flew higher and more frequently, so there is no wonder that they are more frequent.

Similar affects can be seen at ground level too, mist coming from the wings and the visible vortex from wingtips...

Yep, love watching the contrails...especially the way they stop and start. If you look carefully you can see high clouds which mimic where the contrails stop and start as the plane flies through them.

By the way...that plane full of "barrels"? They're called "ballast barrels", which are used for testing new planes to see how they handle with a full passenger load. The pipes and transfer stuff you can see is to move the ballast around during flight to see how it affects plane balance and flying characteristics. Nothing scary about it...a simple google image search will show many pictures of similar setups.
Of course, some of those google search results link to morons who believe in the whole chemtrails rubbish...
