Detroit was in the position where the large majority of most of the cities people being involved in the auto industry. When they moved on from manufacturing everything in one place, Detroit was left with bugger all.

Also given the bad choices the auto makers over there have made, they do have themselves to blame sometimes.
Look at the "huge SUV" debacle...for a while, things like H2 Hummers and massive Chev Suburbans were the trand as a "normal family car"...great oversized lumps getting 10mpg or so. When petrol prices rose (as the Yanks see diesel as the fuel of the devil for family vehicles), people quickly moved back to "normal" sedans. However, the factories had retooled to build thousands of those monstrosities. They were suddenly left with unsold acres of the trucks that suddenly no one wanted, and had to spend up big to retool back to normal cars.
Yanks still love their tanks and have no problem with diesel trucks. Modern tech has seen even F250's and the like get great mpg with ecoboost motors and the like.

I've been to the dodgy area of new Orleans at night, scary as hell sure, even that makes anywhere dodgy in Australia feel safer than behind the blast doors of your local embassy. But it had nothing on the wreak of a city Detroit has become going on what I saw on Al Jazeera today

Wow
Thats eye opening to say the least.

Its a real shame, the once proud motor industry rock solid manufacturing city has gone downhill.

Really opens ones eyes how bad it can be out there.

Must be a very delusional lot of numbnuts if any of you truly believe Auto Manufacturers relocate due to high wages alone.
Oh, and hope all you anti unionists have never accepted anything above the award, coz that would truly make you lot a pack of hypocrites.
Truth is I haven't. All my jobs have been at standard award wage.

And you wonder why the car manufacturing industry is dying in Australia. Their employees want more money, but also want a cheaper car to buy, can't have it both ways son. So You want a better life for your family, do what I do and work multiple jobs. No, ok, so pilfer as much money out of them while you can, but don't complain when there are NO jobs left because its simply too expensive to make them. So you have just cost your children an industry job.

Is it self-centred? Bet your ****.

Problem is its human nature to look after number one & not really consider the consequences in 40-50+++ years times. And we are seeing it now. Gen Y has to pay the price & pick up the pieces of the baby boomers & gen x.

A little less focus on number one & more focus on everyone as a whole would go along way. But on this subject we are heading off topic....

I can't remember the figure but wages & salaries make up a majority of the expenses for Australian businesses. It's a big figure. Problem is, when you raise wages, you need to raise the price, raise the price, government raise taxes, employees need more money, rinse & repeat.

As I said, its a cycle, and won't stop until the economy can't handle it. Which the US should have folded years ago. Now their debt is so far out of control that when they finally go boom, they will be a third world country for a century or so. Possibly more.

If we aren't careful we will head the same direction. If we aren't already.

Aside from all the wage imposed rising cost to industry, bad practise from industries over the years has had more impact on final costing as well. clean green an all that bore costs on business that has cleaned up the air/pollutants but cost millions to large manufacturers. BHP steel works ,ductile iron smelting to name a few. bring forward technology to date, robotics ,computers as such. have a return on capitol over tens of years as compared to a skilled operator.

"Henry ford once said. leave your brains at the door and pick them up on the way out.
"
what about the cost of implementing the GST. how many staff were needed extra to cope with the extra workload

cost per person to insure workers compensation, based on wages (government imposed)

cost of superannuation to workers. (Government imposed)

OHS staff to oversee and implement , cost of supply of what is needed (Government imposed)

then theres the management that has a meeting to discuss a meeting that will be had sometime , top heavy mostly to oversee what the next in line is doing.

multi skilling purpose built workers remain only a small part of the costs required to get a product out.

your a true scholar . I'm glad your setting examples for Australia and working for awards , and not taking increases , the sad part is that some out there are getting them sending the country more into struggle street and forcing decent folk like yourself to have to probably take a cut for the country . Bill Gates, Alan Jones and Ray Hadley have been preeching this for ages , and they lead by example .Work choices was implemented to help the country out and people couldn't even cop that and have a real talk with thier boss on how to keep thier jobs . great to see people out there listening and doing something to help the country out like yourself old son .
