I do remember the old foam seats, I used one for my first son but then the laws changed but he'd turned 7 by then. I also even used a booster seat that had no back on it at all.

My 4 year old son now uses a booster seat that has a tether strap attached to the actual seat and the H harness also has a tether strap. So both the seat and the seat harness itself are attached to the parcel shelf.

This is the seat I have.

Study Shows Placing Car Seat in Center of Back Seat Cuts Risk of Injury in Crash

If you're placing only one car seat in the back seat, install it in the center of the seat — if possible — rather than next to a door to minimize the risk of injury during a crash.

Enter the researchers from University of Buffalo who studied crash-related fatalities in relation to seat location. It turns out the backseat is 59 to 86 percent safer than the front seat.
More astounding (at least to us) is that the middle seat is 25 percent safer than the window seats in the back.
So with this info posted you gotta' wonder why cops get on their high horse telling us what's best.

My wife & I generally have our son placed at Centre Rear. It's supposedly the safest option?

Anyone seen the recent crash test Holden did with the VF?

They did a side impact showing the difference between the "normal" tether and belt secured seat vs the "new" ISOfix system.

While we've been told all along by the powers that be that the belt and tether system is just as safe as ISOfix, Holden's test clearly disproved that.

I'd be more worried about first getting a seat that isn't going to fly around the back seat in an accident than location.

.

Only one problem with the Isofix system....it's not universal.

It will be illegal to use an imported Isofix child accessory.

Fail......

how was the seat tethered (old system)? using the bolt only? or with the seatbelt as well?

also on the subject of child safety and car seats, whichever 'expert' in govt that came up with the rules based on age, rather than height and weight, is a moron! blind freddy can see the flaws in the current set up.

I've just looked at that video and can see some serious bias issues in it.

One dummy has legs that fly around the cabin creating a centrifugal affect and the other doesn't....nothing to do with the seats....different dummy legs most likely.

I am sure the system is better...but it's a "Wheels" video flogging the new commodore by exaggerating the situation.

The conventional seat looks very loose as well.

This, this, this.

My son is 3 and a half and stands at 120cm tall, we need to get him a new seat shortly cause he can kick the back of the passenger seat chair (and does when he's naughty). Need to be mindful of what to get him.

FYI he sits in the LHR. Centre is too painful to lean right over to get his seatbeats on.

Yeah I agree! My 4 year old is nearing 120cm so I'm not sure what seat I can use for him when he gets closer to the age of 7.

Yeah, seems to be a comparison of two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT seats, where the “isofix” is only part of the difference. It just highlights what I said above, that it is important to properly secure the child and the seat.
The challenge is using the seat belt to secure the lower part of the seat. I was always able to secure it very tightly, so there’s no way it would have moved around like the first seat in the video.
