Could having more cylinders have an advantage in rotating mass? Smaller piston size, and lighter...more free revving?

Good point but I'm guessing the Porsche motor has a more aggressive cam because the BMW V8 reaches peak torque at just 3900rpm..

A large capacity 4 cyl will have a Huge Bore and stroke will result in a low revving engine with lots of Torque.
wouldn't be very smooth either

not really suited for Hondas V-Tec

There are some problems with large 4 cylinder engines. Not really sure, but I think it has something to do with the mass of the moving components (pistons, rods, and crack) increasing relative to the mass of the block. (They're balanced vertically but not horizontally?) That's why in the past engines much bigger than 2 litres had balance shafts.
With modern engines it seems 2.4~2.5 is ok, and diesels upwards of 3 litres.
I think straight 6's and V8's are better balanced in all axis.

The reality is that if the bore & stroke are similar, you're going to have similar potential. As somebody said, how long is a piece of string. It really is a question of packaging. In the past I reckon that under any given bonnet, you could get better induction and exhaust with the angled cylinders of the V8. Not so sure that still applies with EFI and forced induction.

I would say yes, where as the lesser cylinder engine could potentially produce more Torque.

If you guys want to play around with this, check out Automation Game. Pretty rad little game, you can make various engines (inline 4/6 and v8s), change bore / stroke / materials / head type etc, gives very close to real life outputs

The budget would be higher on V8 .. Well ?? The $$ I have invested in a turbo IUZ compared to many SOHC Ford 6's .. Is two fold ..
The strange part is the stroke of the Ford 6 and of the Toyota V8 being 3.25 is longer than the Windsor 5.0 which is 3" yet the IUZ revs higher ..

So a one cylinder engine will be 12 times more powerful than a V12 of the same capacity???

V8's aren't so much better balanced, just easily balanced. If you want a naturally.balanced motor it's still I6, V12 and boxers to look out for.

Just to throw the cat among the pigeons - I was under the impression that the 5cyl engine was the smoothest - ala Audi Quattro Group B with sufficient power and an engine sound to rival any V8
