after owning one i beg to differ - the induction growl and spool noise even on a stock FG turbo sounds great - i certainly turn when i hear one

Me, I can go way back, I've driven V8's including the 239 Flat Head Ford, Y blocks, Windsors, FE's including the 427OHC & Clevos, the 385 blocks too.
In the '70's I drove Kerry Packers 5.3 twin turbo V12 HE Jag, (read 1600HP) and many more in between to. I simple truth is there are many, many reasons to own or drive either. Do try to think of a few or at least experience a few.

When I was younger I was all about V8s and never was keen on anything else especially Jap cars but funnily enough the first car I bought with my own money was a MY03 WRX which I still have.
I can't exactly remember why I went the opposite direction but it has been a great car although maybe becoming a little less comfortable these days. Great on open roads, not so great in traffic. I still love V8s but I won't buy a car just for the sake of it having a V8 or any other motor for that matter. |

Forced Induction, as a method of wringing extra performance out an existing powerplant, is nothing new.
I'll be picking up my Turbo 6 on Monday, and I think its the perfect engine for the Terri. But my aspirational car remains the GT. There is no substitute for cubes.

Both have positives and negatives..
All i can think of is "dont be a square".. buy an xr6 turbo.. and love it for the rush.. then for the next car..(Or vice versa!) buy the v8 for the growl and rumble and die an old man/women happy you got to enjoy the best of both worlds in engine choice. |

Having had a number of turbo sixes, a SC FPV 5.0 and now a naturally aspirated Hemi 6.4 I'm really enjoying having a really big naturally aspirated engine but its fair to say each type of engine has its own unique advantages.
I don't think you can categorically say any type is better than the other but under duress if I had to pick an engine I liked the most of ther ones I've owned it might surprise some that I'd pick the turbo six in my BF2 Typhoon. Although only officially rated at 270 kw's it made so much torque and was such a sweet runner it is remembered fondly. My SC 5.0 used to much oil to be remembered well and although it has a wicked top end punch in standard tune it feels a bit tame compared to a turbo six or the Hemi below 4,000 revs. The old saying of there's no substitute for cubes has a bit of merit too it. When's the SC Hellcat coming Last edited by Rodge; 25-07-2014 at 07:00 PM. |

I don't think I know, have driven both cars on owned the XR8 for four or five years, the WRX had no chance, even less if you threw a few mates in each car
Raced a few in my XB coupe as well down at WSID, never had one cross the finish line before me…..and that's when it was a small block and my daily driver.

The e series xr8 back then ran high 15s / low 16s down the quarter and a 0-100km of 8.1 seconds.. even with a few mods would be lucky to run a flat 15. the wrx was 0-100 in 6.2 seconds and low 14s down the quarter mile. Thats stock.. easy high 13s with a mild tune. |

I prefer a V8 rumble but thats really my only preferance to V8s, power/fun wise smaller turbo motors are just as good. That said I dont really fall on either side of the fence, a great motor is a great motor regardless ofcylinders just as a great car is a great car regardless of badge.

I have owned many cars, both old and modern - including 5 b-series falcons in NA/6, turbo 6 and 5.4 Boss guise. Each were good in their own right but if I had my preference it would be the V8. While the Boss motors have more than their fair share of critics on this forum they are a very underrated motor in my opinion. It's not just the noise, they have a character all of their own. You don't need to drive them flat out to enjoy them. Granted, the turbo 6 is quick but I find it a bit clinical. Great fun when you sink the boot in but when you aren't on boost it simply feels like any other xr6. Felt like it lacked presence too.
At the end of the day it's not all about getting from a to b the fastest, its about the whole driving experience. For me, the V8 delivers every time... |

Several years ago Hulk, you really got up my nose with your anti AU posts and on more than occasion I let you know how displeased I was. I now see you have yourself an AU and enjoy it - congrats.
Why just think in terms of either V8 or I6T. I have a 28 year old car, naturally aspirated that literally goes like a rat up an Aquaduct. It will never win any quarter mile race but on a trip say Darwin / Alice Springs, if you were to push it there would be a massive smile on the dial on arrival. I have covered over 20k in less than 2 years in it and I can assure you that on a long trip you would never lose me from your mirror. [/URL] Cheers Vincenzo

One of my best mates has a R32 Skyline....AWD 300+kw on the dyno at both front and rear. An amazing car, 0-100 in under 4sec. Only has fun with motorbikes, or hyundai's with big exhaust pipes.
One day he jumped in to my XE Ghia (Mick Webb built 351).... his first words were " y'know, the skyline is bloody quick....but my God this thing sounds sensational" Speed is nice don't get me wrong.....but the sound of any V8 on full song is hard to beat and will have people stopping to turn their neck to get a better look.... Don't believe me....go to Bathurst and watch the Great Race.

This thing absolutely hauls *** and would keep my 2013 WRX honest, though it wouldn't get in front. Some cars are just fun.. doesn't matter what engine they have in them.

Back when I had my V8 I used to hear blow off valves everywhere I went.
Is it some unwritten rule if you have one you have to make sure it makes a noise right next to the nearest V8? Now I drive the Ranger I no longer have blow off valves going off next to my window on a daily basis. It's much better now since that noise is not one I particularly like. Give me a powerful, tough sounding V8 rumble any day. |

I always ended up weighing v8sound vs boost rush.
Therefore I'm a turbo man I too believe that the T6 is the best thing ford ever did |

I think I need a rubber mallet so I can hit myself in the balls repeatedly.
Would make more sense than some of the ridiculous statements in this thread. Just so as to not sour too many people in my assessment I have to ask, why not NA 4 cylinders as well? After all, my 1997 Hyundai excel was a stocker and used to beat Skyline GTR's all day long.

While I love the XR6T ( the sound, the speed, the wheelspin) and wouldn't trade it for anything, the only reason I bought it was because they had stopped making the XR8. After driving my parents GT-P I've got to say you aren't human if the sound of the supercharged Miami doesn't make you smile like an absolute idiot.
Each to their own though. |

Like so many of your threads hulk its really a case of each to their own. Debate can be fun but occasionally it's a little worthless when it adds little actual value to the forum and nothing to put aside a brain cell for when it's done.
Can't complain when Ford have two balltearingly great options we can bicker over internally

Yup I 've got the best of both worlds too. My AU turns heaps more heads rumbling down the street then the FG ever will, but as for driving long distances, newer is nicer.
