Bugger the Territory unless you want a big car. Uses more fuel, costs more for insurance, more for rego and has more issues than the car i recommended

I know you said you don't like Korean's but honestly go drive a Kia Rio they will surprise you how good they are for the money.
Super cheap to run to!

Buy an EB with a 5.0 and spend the rest of the $12k on mods!

This was going to be my suggestion. I sold off my toy cars to save for a house and bought an 08 Accord Euro Luxury, upgraded the stereo and couldn't be happier with it for a commuter. Comfortable, quiet, reliable, cheap to run and has all the luxuries (plus more) that my pricey Falcons and Commodores had.

i'm still on this subject i haven't done anything about it yet
anyway the vitara runs out of rego in a week and we get our foster girl in a few weeks so i don't see any point re-registering the vitara as its going to be very unsafe for a back seat passenger and hard to get in and out of but i'll keep it as it owes me nothing anyway i have been searching for cars and found a new candidate a BMW E87 120i plenty around all with low km's and all being a reasonable priced and well kept. i have a mate with a E88 and loves it and another mate who works for BMW as a mechanic so i can get parts cheap if needed. any one with horror stories about these baby BMW's? also the kingswood is closer to being on the road so i thought about just making this my daily driver and chuck the baby seat in this. its big and its safe (new brakes, suspension, tyres) maybe not as crash safe though

Is there any particular reason you wouldn't consider an FG EcoLPI? Yes, they are at the upper end of your budget but you'll get a safe, spacious car that would tick most of your boxes except for the jap car and under 100k? If you spend a bit more than $10k you'd find a sub 100k example.
Here's one that just about meets the criteria. https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/d...4067396/?Cr=14

So when you say you can get cheap parts, do you mean cheap parts when compared to say a Toyota or Mitsubishi, or cheap for BMW?
If you want a manual and both you and the wife liked the Lancer, I'd just be doing that. They're nothing fancy and fill all the requirements. If you don't mind auto, I'd be going a Camry or Corolla. Sure, a boring drive, but comfortable, and good on the fuel. But honestly, it sounds like what you say you want and what you actually want are two very different vehicles. |

i guess i don't think like most people i usually don't just buy a car, i work out good points and bad points then decide the only car i didn't think about was the vitara i swapped a 125cc scooter for that on xmas day 2 years ago....great swap for me a smallish 4 door commuter car is not something that i'm comfortable buying at all. i would much rather just buy an FG XR6 buts its just too big and too similar to what i already have and the wife wants the BMW i'm just trying to justify it in my head. plus i get bored of cars real quick so a BMW is at least RWD and not that boring.

Well I can recommend an 2007ish A3 1.8T...I owned one for a few years, never had trouble, went like stink for a little car, economical, and felt tight and solid with 120,000km on the ODO as it did with 20,000 on the ODO.
I bought it as a stop gap (intended for 3 months) and kept it for nearly 3 years as it was just a to all round car, easy to drive and a absolute hoot through the twisties. |

I was going to recommend the BMW E46 330i, a bit older than what you want but guarantee it will drive better than all of that modern Jap **** and well within budget. Failing that the E39 530i would have to be one of the best modern sedans around. These have really stood up to the test of time and IMO one that doesn't have flogged suspension bushes handles and rides better than an FG XR6. Both these BMW are pretty much bullet proof. If buying Id be over hauling the cooling system if there is no record of it. In my old 530i I could manage mid 8l/100km highway which is similar to all the 4.0 Falcons I've owned. https://carsales.mobi/cars/details/B...SSE-AD-4252713 |

the bmw my brother got with his house purchase is a 1994 E34 525i, 160km, and perfect body and trim, and everything electric works and it has 11 months rego
I haven't really seen it yet just saw it when i helped him move so i'm going out in 2 weeks with $2k and might drive it home....unless he sells it in the mean time its the M50 engine and 4L30E GM trans i'm not planning on keeping it forever but if i like it i might get something newer later down the track

BMWs are nothing short of a piece of crap imho.
They have absolutely no resale value AT ALL and the prices for parts and repairs are stupidly expensive. They are unreliable and are just simply not built for Aussie conditions. My mother in law has one, she hates it and just wants to get rid of it. (It's newer than the one you're looking at) Her boyfriend has one, then another 2 for spare parts. lol. (Says something right there!) About 12 months ago i got my daughter into a 4cyl FG Falcon, we were there to buy a BF but were talked into test driving the 4cyl falcon although we had no interest whatsoever. All i could say was WOW!! We ended up buying the fg. Do yourself a favour, test drive one at a caryard before you buy an update vehicle, heaps of safety features, excellent reliability, more power than you expect and insane fuel economy for a largish car. Plus you won't be tempted to modify it. lol. An AU would definitely be my pick for an ultra cheap car if you want good reliability and cheap parts/servicing, you've already owned one of those though, i guess that means you know how reliable they are. The FGs imho are the new AU, a worthy apdate, but just don't look past the 4cyl FG falc. That's my 2c, i want change. lol. |

BMWs are excellent. I had an E30 which I put through hell and it never gave up on me.
As for this "not built for Aussie conditions" argument. That is utter garbage. I love my Falcons but the Beemer was built to a much higher standard than any of my Aussie Fords. I drove it across the Nullabor about once a month for over a year and nothing ever went wrong. |

ebv8 great cars if underpowered. Never owned an M50 BMW but I believe they ran the plastic water pump impeller so may pay to pay some attention to the cooling system. My second car was an M20 powered manual E34. I bought it back in 2004. Had it for nine years and in that time it needed a radiator and ignition barrel, had a good run out of it and proves people like this bloke I quoted wrong as to reliability and parts prices. I've also had the facelifted 540i last of the E34s and that was in another league. Awesome cars and out the equalivent E series and VN-VS an insult to the BMW to compare the both! |
