Funny enough I still have my previous NSW photo licences:
2000: $113, 2005: $129, 2010: $151 & 2015: $170 .

The cards themselves haven't changed much.

And yeah, the card was produced while you wait, except the 2015 one mailed out to you, as only certain selected registries had a machine.

What happens if you lose your license...

Do they take your smartphone too...

I dont mind the idea and it has lots of features that make it looks quite secure.

In the case of showing your licence it has a QR code thats unique every 30 seconds or so which can be scanned by anyone else with the app and will verify if its genuine or not.
No need to hand your phone over, just let the cop or security (eg venue access) look at it and/or scan the code.

Also has features like touch the licence and it flashes up a security watermark to prevent people trying to use screenshots etc.

Ill be glad to no longer have to carry a licence, combined with apple pay etc will soon mean no more damn wallet to carry around.
Stopped carrying a wallet about a month ago, best thing ever, I got one of those wallet phone cases, to keep about 4 cards that I actually use, and about $20-50 in cash, never looked back.

Was wondering the same thing, but I guess it will just be endorsed suspended or cancelled or what ever.

I'm sure if you have a plastic licence it's all the evidence the policeman need to show him you have a valid licence. No checks required.

Please send me a picture of your paper licence and rego sticker...pretty certain you don't get them in NSW..

I bet soon it'll all just be on a data base. Cop types your name and address into his hand held data base and up pops a picture of you and all your details...Why do you require a card? Just like you don't need a rego sticker.

You want ID then get it on your smartphone....you don't have a smartphone then thats your problem. Cops don't need it they have your details.

Credit card is on smart phone now...how long before they stop issuing credit cards? Don't have a phone? Bad luck.....

Oh what if you lose your phone??? Well no different than losing your wallet....but probably less painful, just get a new phone and log in..Bingo everything there.

Might be a worthwhile enough situation to invest in a car charger for your phone then?

When they scan your digital licence with their app, they know it is suspended so out come the cuffs and you go with your phone

This is not as straight forward as it seems. All states and territories will need to agree upon standards, legislation changed, protocols and interoperability, especially security. Then all the state and federal Police Depts will need to be involved and agree. Coppers will need to be re-educated, perhaps new equipment procured and installed, Customer Service centres updated. What happens if someone decides to jailbreak their phone? The list goes on and on...

How do I know, my team implemented the Queensland Smartcard License.

Reminds me of the time, I was issued with the one of the first Qld Smartcard Licences (3 months before public release) and got pulled over at a RBT in Grafton, should have seen the coopers face when I pulled out the new smartcard license "hey Rossco have you ever seen one of these before?"

Why? No other legislation related too cars is standard across states? Every state is different.

I wonder about the stupidity of that sometimes...

^ Because every state and territory is a self serving monopolistic money hungry entity run by psychopaths. The politicians ignorantly think they're in charge.

I wonder how long it will take before hackers figure out how to create counterfeit digital licences.
