Budget has been lowered to circa $30k. Current frontrunner is Pug 3008. Can probably get a late model low k within budget. Looked at the Renault Kolios, but not as well equipped, and why not just but the X-Trail |

Yep I would go a new Ssangyong or even a Haval before a Pug...

Now that the budget is set (for a new car?) Id be choosing between the X-Trail & Tuscon & maybe the Outlander.
Tuscon would be the favorite in that price range for a medium SUV with plenty of options. PS the Ugly Pug is in the small SUV category and demands more coin anyway.

My daughter just had to have a new car. I offered many suggestions but she went with her own, kids she went for the Hyundai Kona.
You say they want a small SUV, do they have a baby or planing on it. My daughter didn’t think about the baby seat and after it’s fitted it hits both front seats and she’s short. With the seat belts kind of fixed, no room to move them much, she also found the seat covers the seatbelt buckles. Things to consider before you buy. |

It does not help some of the seats out there are bigger than a racing seat!

Pug offers 3 "SUV"s:
2008 - small 3008 - mid 5008 - mid+ the 3008 was European Coty when it launched in 2017, and continues to rack up accolades. There's a lot of competition in this market, and we looked at most of it. Loved the Subaru, but just too darn expensive. Hyundais, WTF, prices just way over the top for a Korean. Rav4, shockingly crap. Renault had some great pricing on the Kolios, but not well equipt. In the end, it was the impressive list of standard safety features that made the Pug stand out, and it is a very nice car. Personally I would have gone the 5008, but my daughter preferred the shorter model. We got a 2019 built demo, with under 2kk, for $36k. FYI: Peugeot recently took out the JD Power Dependability award. |

I’ll be interested to hear reports at 6 and 12 months. Hopefully they’ll be mostly positive.

I think at that price the Pug 3008 is the one to get.
Lot of rubbish in the segment that they hide with swathes of plastic chrome and nice wheels. It’s difficult to find a SUV in that price range that has had some passion in its engineering |

Pugs are great ownership when under WTY, not a great vehicle if intending to keep longer term.

You might want to take a look underneath the rear of the car when on a hoist. I've had a couple of frenchies on my hoist and was shocked at the lack of metal under there.

For $30k, we were looking at 2 year old models, with over 40kk on the clock, and struggling to find one close by. So we were getting pushed to around $32~33k. Then we realised that they changed between MY18 and MY19, so the low-mid spec "Allure" model gained a lot of the safety features as standard. and it became an absolute no brainer. Quote:
It has the Prince THB engine, jointly developed with BMW, and which won EoY (in its class) 8 years in a row) Its only 240Nm of Torque, but the curve is flat from 1400 to 5000rpm. As I have warned her, it should give very good economy if driven moderately, but not if she has a lead foot. Last edited by Crazy Dazz; 16-12-2019 at 09:25 PM. |

Pay attention to the tech advice in the thread and the relevant notes about evolution of the design. Don’t assume the dealers are getting it right unless you see it from your own eyes. Simpler to DIY than have it done wrong and become an issue. |

Ok, so here we go again.
Another daughter is in the market.... I shouldn't have taught her to drive in the TTG, now they all want SUVs. Different kettle of fish though, she is looking at cheap 2nd-and options; $10~15k. By definition that means no warranty, so needs to be reliable and easily repaired by Muggins. She wants to be able to haul friends and dogs around, so definitely leaning more towards the upper-mid sized. Unfortunately when dialling in the requirements, the top 100 candidates are all Craptivas. we may yet end up there, but hoping to explore other options. Fords are mostly out, due to I suspect most in the range having the power****. Had a look at the Nissan Joke, but apart from being a hideous monstrosity, the cargo area looks useless for dogs. Maybe a Squashi would be better? Last edited by Crazy Dazz; 01-01-2020 at 02:38 AM. |

Qashqui isn't bad, biggest of the small suvs.
But Nissan's quality has been pretty ****house over the last ten years or so. Parts are expensive and can be hard to get as I think it's made in the UK.

Maybe an older CRV or RAV4.
Problem is many of them are CVTs, which I don’t trust longer term. Could spend a bit more and get an Equinox - proper transmission and drives better than the other offerings (just ugly!) |

2014>15 Kia Sportage. (see post #10)
Slushbox, full size spare, what I consider good quality interior, still a bit of 7 year warranty left, legendary Korean reliability, not GM/Daewoo. |

Just beware of the Theta II engines fitted to Hyundai and Kias. Wouldn’t touch them personally

Have you thought about a 2nd gen petrol Ford Kuga. I think they have a conventional auto, as the powershift was only fitted to the diesels.
