Am i evil? I laughed....

Fact of life. Seen many many dead roos. Hit a joey doing 60 one night. Jumped into the side of the car and died. Hit them in busses and all sorts of stuff. Not much left when a bus hits them at 110.

Dont know how many people actually deal with the roo after they hit it. If you hit one yes worry about your car, but drag the roo off the road into the bush or whatever otherwise more people will have trouble when other animals start eating it and then they hit something. Specially out bush. Dogs, birds and eagles. Those damn eagles. They stand like 3/4 foot high and are solid as. Wouldnt wanna hit one.

Ive got a pic of a mate's vectra who hit one of those eagles (wedgie??) driving from Adelaide to Darwin. Will see if i can dig it up. Right in the windscreen, caved the glass in about 1 1/2 feet (needless to say lady friend who was riding shotgun wasnt overly impressed).

Apparently they just dont move out of the way???

I hit a Plains Turkey in my XH ute.
He launched just as I came along, his legs clipped the bullbar, and he slammed into my windscreen. Luckily it was right in the top corner, so I could still drive.
I also hit one right in the middle of the bar, where the mesh covered the spotlights. Bent the crap out of that. They're certainly not soft!
Also Emu's are rather solid critters too!

You just put that horrible image back in my mind from when I saw that a while ago. Cant remember it very well but it was insane how owned he got.

And to go slightly off topic again, I know in Australia you have no problem with possums but since they were indroduced in NZ they have been an absolute pest and always will be. People hit them with their cars on purpose all the time as they dont do damage, youve just got to try and get them under the wheel.

We are starting to practice cane toad golf over here now, it wont be long before they arrive.

Saw a ute pull into site in central Aus about 12 years ago. Smashed windscreen and the driver had scratches all over him, blood everywhere, and the WB Ute interior was destroyed. He hit a wedge tail and it went into the cab. Reckons he could not stop quick enough and just dove out of the ute. The eagle was going ballistic destroying anything inside the cab

Now who was that person in another thread that claimed they hit a roo in their Falcon traveling at 100klm and it only damaged the blinker and slight scratch on the grille, yeah right, hitting these thing's at high speed do more damage than that, as shown.

It all depends on where they hit, what size they are, whether you hit them on the hop or mid air etc.
If you hit a small roo then there is a chance that you will only come out with a smashed blinker!
Not every roo hit is the same!!! _2:

At 100klm though, I'm sorry but there is no way that you would get away with almost no damage at all hitting a roo no matter what size it may be at that speed, I'd love to be proven wrong, but then again I'd love to see some photo's.

I grew up in the country (Dimboola Vic), and we saw things like this quite often. The image doesn't disturb me, but I understand how it may others.

I'm glad no people were hurt. They are after all, much more important than animals!

Also, imagine the damage to the vehicle, if the roo bar wasn't fitted!

I havent got piccys but can assure you that I have hit 2 roos ( not at the same time ..... different occasions) at circa 100k's and in both instances have had nothing more than a little scratch on the EA ...... Roo hit on the passenger side front ....... on the corner & must have slid around to the wheel arch ..... there was a scratch just above the front wheel arch where its talons must have been trying to hold on :P

The other occasion was in a Torry years ago ....... hit head on but only took a tiny splinter of front grill with him ..... damage was so minimal the owner of the car didnt even know it had happened until I told them .......... he still couldnt see anything ............

It depends on how and where they hit and at what speed. I saw an EB XR6 that hit a big roo at about 140 kph on the Grafton - Casino road and it pushed the engine back into the firewall.

Also, I was about 300 metres behind a grain truck that was doing 110 kph near Moree and moving up for a pass when I noticed an emu running ahead and parallel to the truck. It suddenly turned at right angles and raced across the road. Next thing there was a cloud of feathers came out the back of the truck followed by a carcass. The truckie told me on the CB he hit it dead centre on the bull bar.

also once when getting a lift out west in a hyundai ,driver was doing about 115 and a cow came running on to the road and its nose just clipped the passenger window and back half of the car before we got past, very scary , didnt get to see the cow it took off into the bush

For all you holden lovers out there ;)

This is the damage from hitting a roo at 100km/hr - doesn't look too much but the parts list was quite long and included a new radiator support panel and passenger door skin. It also needed time on the rack to pull the front end straight again. The bugger also took the side mirror!

Weve hit a roo at about 100kph on a gravel road. Smashes light was about the most damage there was. And the cheeky bugger did a spin in the air and kept hopping along after we hit it.

As someone said, it all depends where you hit them, how you hit them, all sorts of factors. Ive seen cars absolutely rooted from them and others with no damage. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Was out with the father in-law a few years ago in his tow truck at Rosebud, had to winch a horse onto the truck that had been struck by a VN-P commodore wagon. As the car hit the horse it has rolled up on to the bonnet and landed on the roof. Almost dead centre of where the roof and windscreen meet, it was shaped like a "v" with the side pillars bent inward and the lowest point of the V just above the dash.
Happy to report the driver only received minor cuts.

Hehe, We have a 95 cruiser wagon. Dad has hit 2 cows in it... the first one did some damage as he wrote the bar off but i had the second one re-inforced. We have hit many animals due to being NRMA and getting called out at odd hours, but if we hit a roo at 100km or more, they simply explode.

Most will try and move out of the way but it takes them a few flaps before they get airborne, best idea with them is to slow down when you see them on the road.

One thing to remember about eagles they take off in the direction they are looking...after living in the N.T. for sixteen years went back on a visit after being away for 18mths...never in the time I lived there did I connect with anything.

This trip picked up an eagle at 170kph had slowed from 200kph 'cos I saw him however we connected he took out the driver side light assembly...$700.00 later........

A good thing to remember as well is that 9 times out of 10 an eagle will take off into the wind. So if you can keep wind direction as part of your situational awareness this helps as well.

Hit what I thought to be a possum on Sunday night, it was right at the end of a bend and I had no room to swerve (right was cliff-face, left was over the edge ~ Mt Dandenong). Despite that, I managed to swerve left a bit, only for the possum to suddenly dash off to it's right (my left). No damage, only a shaken male.

Actually most think it's not that nice to eat! Due to their environment roos conserve all liquids and live on a fairly sparse diet. As a result their meat is all sinewy as opposed to a dirty great scotch fillet from the back of a cow. Mind you its nothing a bit of dianne sauce can't fix!
