SPECIAL AVIATION SECURITY MEASURES FOR
AIR TRAVEL FROM UNITED KINGDOM

SYDNEY, 10 August 2006: Qantas said today that it would comply with new,
temporary security measures introduced by the UK Government for flights departing from and transiting through the United Kingdom.

The new measures, which apply to all airlines operating from the United Kingdom, restrict the items that passengers can carry onto an aircraft as hand baggage (see below).

Qantas has begun contacting customers likely to be affected by the new security measures in Australia, its Asian hubs and in the UK and Europe.

These additional security requirements do not affect Qantas domestic and other international operations.

Qantas operates four services each day from London Heathrow, and also carries passengers from Australia and Asia into Heathrow for onward travel.

As a result of the changes, Qantas customers travelling on flights from and to the UK are asked to allow additional time for check-in.

Further information for Qantas customers will be available on qantas.com.

ADVICE RECEIVED FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM, DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage will be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers will be allowed to take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:

pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (eg money,
credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags))
travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and
travel tickets)
prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for
the flight (eg diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as
authentic
spectacles and sunglasses, without cases
contact lens holders, without bottles of solution
for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of
each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary
items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams
and nappy disposal bags)
female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if
unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes)
tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
keys (but no electrical key fobs)

All passengers will be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying will be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs and walking aids will be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs will be allowed to pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered will be removed from the passenger.

Passengers should be encouraged to configure their baggage in line with the above requirements before arriving at the airport, and to allow plenty of time to pass through airport security screening.

PECIAL AVIATION SECURITY MEASURES FOR AIR TRAVEL TO AND FROM THE UNITED
STATES

Qantas said today that it would comply with new security measures introduced by the United States Department of Homeland Security for flights into and out of the United States.

The new measures, which apply to all airlines, relate to the carriage of liquids and gels by passengers on aircraft and the screening of passenger footwear.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, liquids and gels include beverages (including duty free purchases), shampoos, suntan lotions, creams, toothpastes, hair gels and other items of a similar consistency.

Excluded from the measures are baby formula or juice if a baby or small child is travelling, prescription medicine with a name that matches the name on the passenger's ticket and insulin and other non-prescription medicines.

All passenger footwear will also have to be screened prior to aircraft boarding.

The new security requirements, which differ from those introduced today in the United Kingdom, do not affect Qantas domestic and other international services.

Qantas has begun contacting customers booked on flights to and from the USA to advise them of the new measures.

As a result of the changes, customers travelling on flights to and from the USA are asked to allow additional time for check-in.

Qantas operates 43 services each week between Australia and the USA.

Updates to this advice will be available on qantas.com.

I flew to Atlanta from San Francisco today and apart from not being able to carry any liquids or gels in your carry on luggage and lots of serious looking security dudes the delays weren't bad at all, maybe 5 minutes longer than usual as they looked at the xray machines a bit more closely.
Regards,
Tote

Excuse me? You can walk from England to Scotland!

Anyway, the terrorists succeded. They managed to scare 90% of the flying public and generally cause chaos world wide.

We will bounce back in a matter of time, i just dont like the fact that they were going to do the first bombing this coming wednesday and we only caught them the other day, and apparently a guard at heathrow was in on the operation.

Jesus, I can remember back in the eighties when they mixed a couple of common household chemicals on the "Curiosity show" that were particularly unhealthy......

The question is, how effective would the makeshift bomb be? There's a reason the millitary don't use bombs made from chemicals you can buy at Coles.

Apparently Heathrow will grind to a standstill within the next week if the strict new travel rules for the United Kingdom stay in place, also apparently there have been 4 other major terrorist plots against the UK since 7/7.
