Cant say which is the biggest Nanny state as I have only driven in Victoria for some years now (apart from UK), but Victoria is definitely a BIG nanny state.

There is an assumption that all accidents are caused by speed only, and there is a big campaign at the moment called 'knock off 5", to avoid crashes. I'm still trying to work out what to knock 5 from, the speed limit, 5 kmph above the speed limit that some may travel at, or what? It just doesn't make any sense.

Almost as funny as the "every K over is a killer" campaign. Every K over what? Zero?

well, being a new victorian (formerly nsw) i can say that VIC Sucks - its not about saving lives here its all about revenue, not to mention all the extra road rage with alot of locals doing 10km under and not keeping left, gives me the s####

so true. I've avoided more accidents here from people doing under the limit than anywhere else (except maybe adelaide). Cant wait to move to another state

Between the constant BS signs and trying doing 100 on a perfect road it's a real PITA.

Then to top it off you can get pinged for doing 3k's over the limit, even if your speedo is out new from the factory !!! Give me a break.

Problem is there's some great country to see
Agree with all this ozrunner. This is also the state that gets the high speed XPT train to slow down from 160kph in NSW to 100 kph on a dead straight track in Victoria. And they've got boat owners around Australia up in arms with a law to make you wear a life jacket at all times - even when in bed asleep. In spite of the well known fact that it's dangerous to wear a lifejacket inside a boat because you can get trapped when it goes down.

State of the Armchair Bureaucrat.

All I know is I've been in more trouble with the law in Victoria than anywhere else in Australia.

I'm living in the ACT for the next few months. Rego sucks at $800 but the speed cameras are a joke. Big white vans with huge signs on the roof saying speed camera.

what would happen if australia had a revolution? nothing the government couldnt do anything...so if you are going to complain either do it legally with protets and letters. or just march up to the councils with a few thousand people and demand they change the rules to your likeing if not you will kick them out of their cushy job. its ridiculous how the government can worry what happens over seas when they continue to lay these kind of laws down to us.

Dead correct BOSS290. Its fine to have a whinge and a b1tch, but, follow with letters and emails and protests (legal) if you dont like a law. We are starting to "people power" here in the NT with these BS speed laws......

From what I have read about VIC on this thread, it would seem that is the worst state in OZ for having your civil liberties erroded. What will it be next, no bonking in your car?!? Will the state gov down there ever learn that you just cant legislate people into submission.

I'd say NSW and Vic were a tie, but for different reasons.

Vic may have worse speed camera calibration and no signage, but NSW has thought police to stop people talking about problems within NSW.

BTW, a friend of mine who works for westlink told me that in NSW they are considering using E-tags to measure point to point on the M7 and other alike roads for the purpose of working out if you have been speeding. Also, the RTA has confirmed that they are looking at expanding the technology of the road safety cams to monitor traffic speeds, in order to issue infringements. Our Nanny is called morris.

Ooh how nasty! Keepleft where are you when we need you?

But by the way, how many of you know that your car's computer will advise the police what you were doing just before that crash? You're still safe to pick your nose though. I don't think the technology's advanced that far.

Soon we won't even have to get out of bed. Big Brother will do everything for us.

Let's just hope the big brother you speak of is nothing like the morally bereft pre pubescent imbeciles at channel 10. I can handle the fines but to have an absolute moron like gretel watch my life would drive me to suicide.
