dude, to my surprise my old I6 ED Auto with stock motor, only a cat back exhaust would beat a friends VL Turbo Auto which was stock with just an exhaust.
So the XR8 would do a better job

I have a mate who is in his mid 40's. His VL Turbo was bought when they were pretty new.

Its a 5 speed with NO INTERCOOLER but it does have a hybrid turbo.
Towing a Trailer with CB900 Bol'dor, my furniture and garden equipment on the back (the thing was chocca's) his VLT was able to pull away from my 351 and toploader equipt XT falcon (it had nothing else that would sap power - no power steer, no a/c etc)
I had the secondaries open in 3rd going up a hill on a cool night - he smoked me.
In fact his car is what made me want a turbo car.
All that aside the RB30DET was a pretty awsome motor for the time - easy to get 300,000k's from original engine.

Karls old Volvo 760 Turbo used too thrash the SH1t out of Vls , use to be funny until the safe swisss engine Blew every seal and lost all its oil at Frankston McDonalds !

Cheers

lol ive just read that and it seems the forums divided!

For an 18 year old, do u think hes really put that much money into it? Does he have the money to have had it half decently worked?

To be honest i think ull have him. But it will be close. What times have you run at clader?

HAHAHA Funny stuff

I would be very wary when approaching a VL in decent nik, take it from someone that got his old turbo Cal into a 14.1 by spending less than $20, if i tell you the rest you won't believe me lol. But ye as for the cooler, a SeriesV RX7 cooler which is I think 300x300 got them in for an easy low 13 high 12.

I have much respect for the car, very little for most of the current owners though.

Same.

Knew someone at TAFE (this was early to mid-90's)
This guy had a Berlina Turbo with Walkinshaw wheels. Massive cooler behind the stock bar ... hidden exhaust.

It sounded like a truck ... but when on boost ... hell it was crazy ... first time I had been in a turbocharged car ... bloody hell.

Be very wary ... have a look under your mate's bonnet and see what turbo he is running ... that should be a decent indication of what you are up against.

I'd say you would beat him depending on what mods and I'd say he would have to have few to give you a run. Personally though I would go looking for bigger fish to fry!

Let me put it to you this way. My 18yo bro has a very good condition VL non turbo.
When we race, my tired old AU with over half a million kays, on the gas, just wins.

The only thing VLs have going for them is they are light, like 1250kgs cos they have no crash safety.

Our AU's would usually be the wrong side of 1550kgs, add almost 100kgs for the gas.

jones_aus has the right idea.

I think someone needs to cool off a little, if you don't like being asked a question or for that matter have your story questioned then don't post, otherwise get used to the fact that people will ask questions.

I was comparing condition, not age. If you want to turn it into an age competition, go for it. Just don't criticise me for what i said.

And I was refering mainly to the way in which you decided to comment.

Again if you don't like what people have to say, tuff, get over it. :

You say you were comparing condition, do you know how the VL has been treated in the past, you say your brother is 18 so this would tell me that he has not had it very long.

Dont think you should have to much trouble if it is stock but if as u said if he as a cooler and 'turbo' (bigger etc?) mayb abit closer but you will still have the better car

As has been said; how many people are upfront and honest about the mods done to their car, and how many VLT's do you think would still be stock after 20 years??

Forget about it...he will kick your ****.

Please take it to the track though. I'm very keen to know just how quick a 260kw Herrod AU XR8 is.

I got three mates with VL turbo's, one heavily modified 9/10second one, one fairly modified one that would probably run 12's once it's done, and a stockish one with just a FMIC, 3 inch exhuast, fuel pump and more boost they're all very fast the stockish one just cains as it is. I reckon you'd probably get beaten, depending on what's done to it, but if it's stock then you'd cain him.

thanks for all the posts guys, more than what i expected to get over what little less than 24 hours :P
I'm very keen on beatin this guy, and like someone posted, his only 18 so i doubt his done much to it over the past few months considering the fact his still at school he wouldn't have had time to do much apart from the turbo and cooler

Dont get too cocky.....age has nothing to do with anything.

I had infinitely more spare time when I was 18 than I do now ;)

By the way this isn't the first turbo I'm up against, not to be a show-off or anything but there has been a time a few months back when I took out a 2000 model wrx with turbo, cooler and a cat back. Don't know wether it was because I was just too quick for it or the guy just didn't know how to shift
