"Ah.....I think I got it now"

Orthodox = Greek......am I correct?, (please excuse my lack of religious knowledge.)

To whoever is celebrating tomorrow, have a great day, all the best to you all.

Actually the Greek component is relatively small when you take into account that the largest Orthodox population is Russian, there are many orthodox nations throughout Europe.

I'm Ukrainian Orthodox...well, I was christened that anyway.

I used to get extra presents sometimes, so I'm not complaining!

Once my grandma died, I lost contact with that side of the family as my mother hates her heritage while my old man wishes he was more individually active in ensuring that my brothers and I retained some culture. Mum didn't want us to retain anything.

I'm with Dad. Never forget where you come from.

I knew being Macedonian would come in handy! Nah in all seriousness, proud to have a Macedonian heritage and as has already been said, it's not all about your religion and background it's about respecting everyones beliefs and living peacefully.

Sreken Bozik.

Ristos se rodi.

And I don't mean to be rude or anything here, nor racist, but didn't the Greeks recently change their Christmas to the 25th December and not with the traditional 7th January? I do remember reading this somewhere.

Hey, can i ask how the orthodox christmas comes about at this time of year? Is it a completely different calendar? Or does your religion have a different take on what happened and when? I must plead ignorance on the subject!!!

Regardless, hope all of our orthodox friends had a nice day

Hey, you call your grandma "Baba" as well?
I always spelled it as Bubba, but awesome man.

I remember in grade 2 we were asked what we called our grandparents. Most people had the common stuff, but when I said, "Bubba", the class cracked up laughing uncontrollably. Then with the "Yedoo(sic)" for grandfather, the laughing continued. It's really spelled as "Dido", but to my understanding, it isn't pronounced with a "D", but rather a "J" and the single "O" is spoken more like a double "O".

Ahhh, memories. Pity they all gone now. Well, I have a grandma left, but I don't see her anymore. I don't slay dragons, I ignore them.

Today is actually a day of rest overseas, more a religious holiday than a regular public holiday, I only know this because one of my cousins is here at the moment and thats what he said this morning LOL.

They're stuck in the past with a calendar the Catholic church ditched centuries ago :P

It confuses the hell out of me, but from what I gather the Gregorian calendar replaced the Julian calender in the 16th century. The Julian calendar had a slight error in it, to correct it the Catholic church just dropped the extra days, making Catholic christmas/easter earlier but on the "true" date, whereas Orthodox kept using the Julian date, which is "wrong" and continues to get further away from the "true" date.

It was addopted by the British Empire in 1750 odd and totally skipped 11 days. September 2nd went to the 14th or something.
