Has anybody seen the movie called "SUNSHINE" thats out at the cinemas at the moment?
Its bloody awesome, edge of your seat sci-fi thriller about space exploration and the possibility of our sun dying.

Anyway, anybody here feel the same way? :
YES MATE THANKS FOR THE INFO . I FEEL EXACTLY THE SAME WAY .

Ive always thought of space travel as not getting there faster because at the moment our perception is you cant travel faster then light as in the size of an engine required to go even as fast as light makes it impossible and even if we could travel as fast light it would still take billions of years to get to some places which defeats the purpose. Im not saying that its not possible to go faster then light there probably is away but it wont be for ages so i believe that space travel will in the near future of it anyway require some form of sleep pods or stasus (spelling) fields much like the ice packs they use today where they take out your blood and put some liquid **** in instead cant remember what its called but they put that **** in take you to the hospital fix you up put your blood back in anybody else heard of this?. Apparenly freezes your body into a type of stasus by lowering your temperature to a certain degress to stop your body from degrading or some ****. Very sci fi.

BREAKING NEWS

Scientists have released the first images of the surface of the planet

Unfortunately they have found no sign of intelligent life :

But seriously this is pretty cool. If we have managed to find one of these planets in however many years of us looking for them with the technology we have now, there must be a whole lot more that we haven't seen yet. And XRChic I totally agree with you, there's just so much we don't know and we really cant assume anything.

Here is a site that is interesting. It has lots of links to other sites of interest. Even if you are not in the aero-space industry, it is a good read.

Puts is basically saying that there could be other life forms which exist in entirely different habitats, such as extreme heat or cold, which use energy in an entirely different manner because they are composed of completey different elements to us, or even composed of elements UNKNOWN to us!

Life elsewhere may even not exist in the same state as we do, they could be gaseous or liquid metal based or something, so they would have entirely different ways of absorbing and processing energy.

So that means that any planet could conceivably host life forms, but just that we may find it harder to discover them because we are too caught up in looking for life LIKE US. There could be life forms closer than we realise but since we have no understanding of how they live and exist or their composition, we may not have the means of discovering them. Imagine if they live in a different time scale to us? Perhaps they live an entire lifetime in one of our seconds? Their entire civilisation could be over before we can discover them and that may happen over and over again... or perhaps the opposite... other beings could be living one second to 70 of our years...

There are too many possibilities out there to assume anything really, and that is what I find fascinating. I think we are not capable of knowing all there is to know yet because we are too limited by what we think we know and what we think we need to find.

One day, 1000s of years down the track, who knows what we will be, if we are here at all... but it will be interesting along the way I think!
I keep telling people...............XRChic is a seriously smart woman! After this post Jac, I rest my case. You go, girl!!!

Its still widley debated as to wether viruses are considered living creatures as to reproduce they require another living cell to take over. That being said I agree with the others saying that our definitions of life and the search for life like us is far to narrow. We need to expand our thinking.

To those wishing to build a Ford rocket - don't bother. They already tried - it got half way out of the solar system then had to turn back due to brake shudder and a dodgy diff. Apparently the dealership denied warranty. Also the Holden rocket was much better anyway as (despite being inferior in every other way) it could reach the star 0.5 secs faster than the Ford rocket.

It is very interesting read. I was thinking on the way to work, the amount of fuel required to travel that distance, the communications that would be required.

And, I thought (i could be high on drugs at the moment, as per usual) but doesnt time slow down when you travel faster?

BTW, i dont do drugs.

Well, fuel isn't really the problem as in space you only need enough to get up to speed then you can turn off the engine. (lower speeds)

And, in addition to time, the ship also gets heavier the faster you go, its a drag effect, so you need a bigger engine to go faster + more fuel, that weighs more, ship gets heavier again. An endless cycle.

Hopefully someone will work out a way to make the ship lighter while keeping the engine's power. (Thats Warp Drive by the way)

Or pulling some tricky space warp stuff like in Event Horizon! That would be awesome. Bending space around to meet so you just pass through the hole, from one point to another in a different place in the universe. Imagine the 1/4 mile times! :

well the worst thing about our qtr times, is that we would be projecting another half the weight of our car again. :(

bigal, i now understand the endless cycle. damned if you do, and damned if you dont.

People are forgetting that if this planet is 100billion light years away. The light that we are seeing to “look” at the planet is 100billion year’s old, essentially looking back in time. So it is theoretically possible that in relation to our time frame this planet and/or its star don’t even exist anymore!
Its all to crazy to think about!

a million solar systems are formed in the universe everyhour

i do not claim to understand this but its quite interesting

"With 10 to the 11th stars in our galaxy and 10 to the 9th other galaxies, there are at least 10 to the 20th stars in the universe. Most of them may be accompanied by solar systems. If there are 10 to the 20th solar systems in the universe, and the universe is 10 to the 10th years old -- and if, further, solar systems have formed roughly uniformly in time -- then one solar system is formed every 10 to the negative 10 yr = 3 x 10 to the negative 3 seconds. On the average, a million solar systems are formed in the universe each hour."

Space is a vacuum. What causes drag in space?? The biggest issue about seriuosly fast speeds in space is getting clobered by a piece of space debri the size of grain of sand, which is big enough to wipe out the star ship enterprise.
