I agree completely.

If you asked me even a week ago I thought we we're moving towards complete lockdown but understood that as a nation we would struggle to comprehend how that looks and so it needed to be done in increments and the first stage of this announced over the weekend certainly confirmed that for me, but the stuff he came out with last night just sapped any confidence I had in him, he's clearly not prepared to make the hard decisions and would prefer to only confuse the situation and gamble economics against peoples lives.

Two parts of your post I'd like to address.

The first - the population difference and size of the economy might be one reason. You can see it in ScoMo when he's talking that not only is he addressing a real health crisis but he is trying to protect the country from an also very real financial crisis - depression even.

Secondly; no major lob loss? Are you not following the media? Early indication was that unemployment would jump from 5% to 7% - now 11% or higher.

As far as im concerned there should be a complete lock down of all non essential business and services as of Friday, give the people an opportunity to do what they have to and lock them down, anyone who hasn't read the writing on the walls by now hasn't been paying attention and that's on them.

Keep open Hospitals, Emergency Services, Utilities maintenance, Doctors Surgery's, Chemists, Banks, Petrol Stations, Supermarkets, Fruit and Veg Shops, Butchers and Convenience Shops, shut down the rest, if you're not going out you dont need a new pair of shoes, a new dress or some jewellery.
Implement an emergency system for schools which caters for only the absolute necessary.
Call on every financier to put repayments on hold for 3 months, call on Landlords to give tenants 3 months grace on rents, anyone who fails to comply should be dealt with accordingly.

Just to clarify i was referring to jobs in Nz every one that had a job gets paid $585 for 12 weeks paid by govt, these jobs are still there just on hold, and yes i imagine there will be companys here that don't make it so some jobs will be lost, but we don't have massive centrelink lines like Oz. Footnote i haven't yet heard of any one being laid off amongst my friends family bar the Govt lockdown period.

All of my guys will be getting the $585, including myself, for the twelve weeks and when we are hopefully back to work in 4 weeks I will be paying the additional to make it back up to their standard wage. Very simple system that looks like it will work well. Yes it is half of what they are earning but if you can't go out you can't spend any money except for the necessities, it will be tight by the time they take out rent and food but it is a liveable amount over here. A lot of the people who lost their jobs are casual in the hospitality industry and tourism which is mainly seasonal anyway. I also haven't heard of any firms, admittedly mainly construction, that have laid off anyone.

I think it has a lot to do with Oz having separate states and trying to get every one on the same page, look mate i like Aussie and hate to see your Govt sitting on there hands, they only have to look across the ditch and see what can be done, Nz is not well off by any stretch but we have done it, you just have to freeze everything, we have used our economic stimulus package to pay workers and keep jobs open, wheres yours gone on comisions probably.

Have so many pictures on FB of people visiting all the time, them going places in big busses with these groups etc.

My uncle isn't all that mobile, and needs dialysis 3 days a week, my aunt is his full time carer and lives week by week. She also can't go out and spend half a day buying stuff like I'm happy to do.

I have been delivering a box of essentials every 3 days... if I didn't they would be starving and wiping their rears with their dirty laundry..

I guess you can't beat family to bail you out when you need help (trust me I know) and when it comes to friends it's always quality over quantity.

Yep. There is a proportion of people who will flaunt the recommendations simply because they came from an authority. We cant protect them from themselves, but we can punish them for reckless behaviour that contributes to risking others.

Last night Scomo stated Essential Jobs were all the jobs.
I took that as him saying keeping as many people as possible working is essential for financial reasons. Fair.
Its interesting though how the work changes so quickly to accommodate our world and whats happening in it....jobs that were "normal" have now become essential services, like the companys manufacturing ventilators.
Another example I've just been given is a friend who does plastics fab. They are flat out crazy with orders for sneezeguards, dividers, screens after a fairly slow start to their year. You will probably start seeing these things in all the supermarkets and chemists, etc, if not already

Problem with Victoria is, most people think Victoria is Melbourne.
During the fire season we regularly experience 38-40-44 deg days for weeks and no total fire bans but the second Melbourne has a 38-40 deg day its panic station total fire ban for the whole state.

So do we listen to the feds or do we obey state govco ? Wish someone would make up their minds.

There will be many lessons to be learned during and after this crisis has passed and it has highlighted existing problems long before this happened.

We need to identify the problems, causes, and actually follow through on implementing solutions.

I hope that we get through this on the more mild side but we may not. Let's hope for no more natural disasters for a while on top of this.

As his landlord, yeah mates rates rent, what do i do? Yes he will have rent for a few weeks. He pays pocket change really. Im not currently exactly going to say sorry mate we're not mates anymore the streets at the end of the driveway. He has nowhere to go. His brother lives local but with 5 kids, his stable is over full. His parents live up the coast and have no space, and the job prospects arent good at all up there. Its all a bit grim for some people at the moment. I personally am still employed and working, but very concerned about what happens in the near future.

They were discussing this all today on the radio, landlords holding hand out for rent on tenant whose a casualty of the job losses, same with commercial leases and their landlords.

When I closed my workshop a few years ago I just walked out on the lease, stiff **** bro cya later.

With commercial leases I imagine there's a lot of coffee shops considering walking on their leases.

Your choice bud, you can evict them but is there going to be new tenants around the corner?

Its a legitimate mate. He has been living there since he lost his last job 7 years ago and fell on hard times. So id be more inclined to do what mates do. Last time it was a leg up, this time help find meaningful employment. I dont want no random living within 10m of my house who doesnt send (now redundant) texts on a sunday that just say pub.

Explaining The Covid 19 Virus

THE BEST EXPLANATION OF COVID 19
Elizabeth Hallam
This was shared by Amanda Howson RNand tells us why this bug is NOT like the
influenza virus influenza.
This was posted by a friend in Pathology. Thought it explained things really well.
Oh OT, ED RN, NSW.
I was asked today what is the difference between a influenza and COVID19.... can
we just have one day free?! Anyway here is the info to help you all,
“Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it
is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this with others who don’t
understand.”
It has to do with RNA sequencing...i.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are
recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some
immunity to it before it comes around each year. You get immunity two
ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses come from animals. The WHO tracks novel viruses in animals
(sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer
from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1, birds in the case of the Spanish flu).
But once one of these animal viruses mutates and starts to transfer from animals to
humans...then it’s a problem. Why? Because we have no natural or acquired
immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the
human immune system doesn’t recognize it, so we can’t fight it off.
Now...sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human. For years
it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates
so that it can now transfer human to human. Once that happens, we have a new
contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that’s what
decides how contagious, or how deadly, it’s going to be.
H1N1 was deadly, but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish
flu. Its RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus. It existed in animals only, for nobody knows how
long. But one day, at an animal market in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it
mutated and made the jump from animal to people.

At first, only animals could give it to a person. But here is the scary part. In just TWO
WEEKS, it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human.
Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”.
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have
some natural or acquired immunity), took off like a rocket. And this was because
humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus changed itself in such
a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs.
That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1, or any other type of
influenza...this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater. And, it’s already mutated
AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain S and strain L...which
makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.
We really have no tools in our shed for this. History has shown that fast and
immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia
and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in
the US during the Spanish Flu.
Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him till the Black
Plague passed (honestly, I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had
no tools in his shed, except social isolation.
And let me end by saying...right now it’s hitting older folks harder...but this genome is
so slippery, if it mutates again (and it will), who is to say what it will do next.
!!!! flatten the curve.
Stay home folks. And share this to those that just are not catching on."

Chairman's Award: Chairman's Award - Issue reason: Your outstanding contributions to this community have not gone unnoticed. IN my view you are a worthy recipient of the (rarely used) Chairman's Award.

Arent congregations also on hold? So no church services at the moment. Weddings are capped at the 2 stupid people getting married, the priest or celebrant, and the 2 witnesses. Funerals are capped at 10 people ( dunno if that includes the deceased). But bottlos remain open.
