Would I drive a 86 with my mate in the passenger seat? Yes. Why? Because people are more inclined to think you and your mate are more than "just mates" when you drive a little drop top coupe. Put a metal roof over your head and hey presto, you are merely metro-sexual. |

Here we go ... people are now even comparing the 86 to an EVO ... please an EVO and any Toyota should not even be mentioned in the same sentence!!!
An Evo will decimate the 86 on any track! in any weather conditions! with any driver! ... and if you don't understand why then maybe you should rethink your passion for cars and star a new hobby ... |

The 86 looks like a fun little car, but for $29990 do you really beleieve your gonna get a porsche? If you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Its a $29990 car people, some of the comparisons with proven marques some people are making is just ridiculous. |

http://news.toyota.com.au/toyota-86-...ational-awards Toyota has succeeded in its aim of recapturing the classic sports car experience in its new 86, according to the expert judges of the 2012 Vehicle Dynamics International Awards. The global panel of specialist engineers, technologists and journalists have named the sports coupe Car of the Year (jointly with the Subaru BRZ) and honoured its chief engineer Tetsuya Tada as Dynamicist of the Year, alongside Toshio Masuda, his Subaru counterpart on the project. Toyota's commitment to producing cars that are more rewarding to drive, championed by its president Akio Toyoda, has also earned it the accolade of Dynamics Team of the Year. The Toyota 86 arrives in Australia next month as a standard bearer for a revival of Toyota's sports car heritage, a machine that has been designed in every aspect to be a true driver's car Its character is determined by its classic front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration and the use of a compact, lightweight, free-revving 2.0-litre “boxer” petrol engine. Combined with a low centre of gravity, low inertia and overall light weight, the result is pure driving pleasure. Vehicle Dynamics International magazine’s editor Graham Heeps said this simple approach helped earn 86 its Car of the Year status. “In the face of rising power outputs and ever-greater levels of complication in the drivetrain, suspension and steering, cars from major manufacturers that take a less-is-more approach and offer fun at legal speeds have been thin on the ground,” he said. Among the judges' comments on the Dynamicist of the Year title, Matt Joy, the Press Association's motoring editor, said: “By sticking to a tried and tested formula, Tada and Masuda have created a car that enthusiasts have been crying out for one that eschews the never-ending quest for ultimate grip in favour of balance, response and driving pleasure at realistic road speeds.” The judging panel gave much credit to Akio Toyoda for inspiring a new direction in dynamics in both Toyota and Lexus models. Phil Morse from the USA said: “A quick look at Toyota's vehicle line-up should remove any doubt that there is a fierce competitor in the company driver's seat, and that the tenets of motorsports – superior technology and the enjoyment of driving – serve as his guiding light.”

Is that like saying if you spend $70k do you believe you'll get an AMG? Cause I recall HSV saying they were taking to the germans. And mind you, whilst Toyota has been dormant as far as 'performance' cars go in recent years, they are far from clueless about how to build a good car. Remember Supra? Celica GT-four? How about LF-A?

Pity I don't have one available as a drive car, I'd happily take that challenge just to see how it went :P

Well, im sure if someone is as immature as you, you'll be walking home with your tail between your legs... When you bring hard facts to this thread, rather then outlandish claims, childish traffic lite drags etc...im sure you'll be taken seriously. There are people out there (like Flappist) whome have actually gone out and driven the car, and have provided propper feedback.

if I want a sports car I'll buy a proper one. Not a $29990 bargain basement. Looks like a Porsche handles like a Porsche but can't hold off a fg xt? Would you consider it special when every taxi on the road would romp away from it?
That's my point. It's great at the Priceline but it's a compromise. No punch. |

Well, the 86 is sitting on a modified Impreza chassis, and the Impreza is a really poor car for its segment, so you may have a point. Interior quality and build quality I fear will be woeful, but it's the same in an $85k FPV or $90k HSV.
The people who want an 86, I fear now, will buy it simply because other people "don't get what the car is about". I'm not really sure they do either. I'd be quite happy to line up any number of small hatchbacks against it on a nice mountain pass, and bet I could keep pace. Hell, I'd even take a Kia Rio SLS 1.6 and wouldn't be embarassed. When you strip it to the core, it seems people just want an affordable small sports car that looks kinda funky, and apparently, it has to be RWD. I'm a big skeptic of this car, and I won't hide it. I just think there's a heap of other cars that will do the job its touting it's all about - just as well, if not better than it will, and a lot of them have better engines and are already established players. But, as we all know, buying a car isn't about what car is the best on paper, it's about what you feel when you go and sit in it, and what you feel when you have a drive of it. Case in point the Polo GTi I just bought. I was never really sold on them, but one drive and bugger me - Amazing little car. Terrific value for money, fantastic little chassis and a brilliant engine/gearbox combination. But, if I'd never gone and had a look at one, I'd have never known and just thought they were a bit faggy forever. Anyway, good luck to you guys and girls who buy one. I'm sure you won't be displeased with it, and if it makes you happy, and you're happy to spend your hard earned on it and drive it every day, then go for it! Toyota and Subaru have provided a car that can easily be modified. There is no encrypted ECU so engine tuning is meant to be straightforward. When they developed this car it was done with tuners and track day enthusiasts in mind. Just look at the features available. The simpletons out there won't get the point of the car but most do. Three colleagues of mine have already thrown down deposits for GTS models.

Its not built by Subaru, rebadged as Toyota. Its built by Subaru and Toyota, and badged as either Subaru or Toyota. They arent trying to "hide" the fact its well known, the dealers will even tell you this when you test drive one (know from experience). Unlike the Holden Captiva, which a friend of my wife bought and was a little embarrased to find out her "Holden" was Korean made, and not Aussie like many non-car people may believe. Its direct competitor is the Aussie made Ford Territory after all. Or the bloke I work with who bought a Ford Escape, to later realise it was actually a Mazda Tribute. Both these people aren't car enthusiasts, just buy cars for transport. But it become clear than Ford or Holden dont want you to know where their cars come from. |

Keep in mind in expanding on that, there has to be a certain feeling to simply jumping in and sitting in a car. I know that if I go down to the local Ford dealer today and sit myself in a 335 GT I'm going to feel a bit giddy about it - regardless if I drive it or not.
Same as when my old man traded his BF F6 for a 370z. The 370z isn't as quick. It will kill the F6 in the corners, but it gives you a certain feeling simply when sitting in it that you know it's cool (despite what the haters think about sports coupes.) The 86 would then simply 'feel' a whole lot cooler than sitting in an XT Falcon. If I'm wrong in feeling that way, then so be it, but I think most people would have to relate to it.

People who are against the 86 are against karting, which is the purest (perhaps) form of motorsport..its not about bulk power but maintaining speed and enjoying apex's..thats it. I also see this car as a great alternative to 99.9% of all the other hatchbacks out there. Why buy a corolla, fiesta etc when you can get this. Most of those people buy the cars for fuel efficiency..they are not carrying heaps of people around. Might aswell have fun doing it.

Now, why do you think an FG XT would have it over one of these? Is it because the FG XT has around 25% more power? It also has around 35% more weight. Then there is torque delivery and gearing to take into account. If you were looking for a sports car you would go with a more expensive option, that doesn't mean this car is no good, it is a $30k car so it will be out done by a $100k sports car, but what it is for what it cost is interesting to a lot of people. You may not be one of them, but that doesn't mean it is rubbish, just not for you. |

On the plus side for Toyota, obviously they've done something right with the car if the wait list is now out to 12 months.
