My Adelaide daughter does not drink coffee, so I try and drop in here and always tempted for sustaining the belly.
Just never knew its name.

I headed to Clarendon bakery for a pastie yesterday.
They were shut so drove on to Meadows where I joined a big group of people in the Pik a Pie Bakery. This group was mostly made up of older ladies, it was like they were in a Pie club or something, it was a madhouse. Anyway about 30 minutes later I was served and the food was good enough to realise why there was 2 dozen people all hanging around their counter. 1.5 hour round trip for a pastie? Unexpected but it was nice day here yesterday. |

Back at Down South Bakery Cafe for a donut fix. They were on special for $3 each so I bought one to eat and one for Ron.
They are large, very heavy and a meal by themselves. The bag is 150 x 200mm.

One of the best I've ever eaten! Perfectly formed dough with depth and Goldilocks consistency. Chocolate was also excellent.

The young ladies running it are very pleasant and friendly too. I could become a regular patron as it's only a 4 minute drive from my house

Back out the track to Mt Meg, good day for some baked goods, thought I would skip the wobbly custard tart for a Hide's of Benalla custard, apple danish and a nice crispy hot sausage roll.
Both went down a treat before I started this morn. Bit slower on the dirt as heavy rain last night brought out lots of Kangy's.

Back to Down South Bakery Cafe again for a late lunch at 3pm
Chunky steak and mushroom pie. I thought about buying something else but when I was half way through the pie, I was glad I didn't. A very substantial pie,.packed with chunky steak and a few mushies, perfect pastry and gravy to meat ratio. The pies here would turn a vegan into a carnivore Also, the food here's heavy duty, anyone noticed what's holding up the tables?

Not exactly a bakery, but close enough. This is on Acland Street St Kilda - southern side Luna park end. There are four or five of these shops in close proximity of each other. Worth the drive down. Take ya misses, go in all four shops, then on the way home drop her off at Jenny Craig. Skip to 1:00 |

What you've gotta do is slip a knife between the crust and jimmy the lid off without cracking it, put the sauce on top of the meat inside the pie, put the lid back on and then eat it as per normal. |

Ninja sauce? Sounds like the kind of thing my younger brother would do.
Actually I thought it was quite a bold presentation, it allows the sauce to stand in its own right - not as adjunct to another item. And totally unrelated but as a general bakery/café related grumble, I detest the subtle-yet-persistent attempts to inveigle “schmear” into our café lexicon. Unless you know and enjoy Yiddish grub, it’s a fairly pointless borrowing, as was jus for more sophistimacated gastronomic repasts. |
