Yet another industry closed down with no thought to the future. Now we buy 95% from other countries, we have given up any hope of price & quality control. Premium petrol has averaged $1:70 for the last week or so in my area.

We need a car that is manufactured in Australia and runs on LPG, which is locally produced.
Then we will have no reliance on fuel from other countries.........hang on a sec..

It is cheaper in the short term to buy from the Arabs than to use our stuff. From a strategic point of view, I think Govco should build a small refinery out there, but then you'd have the greenies up in arms! |

Truer words could not be spoken. Until we address the 'self entitled behaviour' that seems to be at the core of many people, politicians & businesses these days, we will continue to see the imbalance of wealth increase and things like the price of petrol will be the last things on our minds.

Here's another interesting read on the dwindling national liquid fuels stockpile -
https://thenewdaily.com.au/money/fin...fuel-reserves/ It might be time soon to start building some new viable oil refineries around the country if things get worse oversea's perhaps? Ev cars etc is one thing but oil runs alot more than just cars (industries) & according to the experts, disruptions to the supply can have a dire effect on the country. cheers, Maka

Irrespective of this so called fuel debate in which it has been on the Horizon for years btw ,
IS why is cheap inferior imported fuel so effing expensive! That should be the "real" question imo . It's all just happened this morning , all you know that , this morning! , as i saw it on the TV . Paul

They are hoping to have the issue sorted by 2023. Let's hope there are no wars in the meantime.
5 years to sort an issue that could effect national security is a joke. |

We had our own refineries years ago but guess what. Unions shut them down... Sounds familiar doesn't it.

It's the mega refineries in asia that have caused a lot to close. They can refine so much more oil than our smaller ones do, while being a hell of a lot more cost effective. |

And while we are talking about our 'Aussie' refineries, who actually owns them?

The price of solar power, also LiIon batteries is falling continually, and that will power most of the road's vehicles in, oh, about 6 years. There will be a glut of oil on the market, prices will crash, and only the easiest of reservers will be economic to pump.
You can put up a solar farm and a huge battery in 100 days. You could have as much storage as snowy mountain revisited all sorted out in 300 days. Or, in 1000 days, you could get the design and permits and political solutions in place for extracting and processing oil, at an economic loss. And another 1000 days to build it, if you're lucky. If people want to waste their dollars that way, fine. I'll keep my powder dry and grab an EV in about 5 years, which will cost far less per km and yet outperform almost any ICE vehicle. Its written on the walls.

I was reflecting on the 100 day bet Musk had to do the South Australian big battery, and the fact he did one in (was it California?) in 88 days. But generally because solar and batteries is digital technology, it follows the same ever downward price curve, as well as getting built faster. In only a few years your basic new ICE car will cost more and perform worse than the EV equivalent. No one's going to buy it. So if you like your V8, you may not have to worry about petrol prices, because global oil prices will fall if EVs slow down oil consumption. The investment in refineries is already done, so they will have excess capacity. To shift more petrol you will have to lower the price. You can't really stockpile it. If lower prices doesn't increase demand, the high cost wells and refineries will have to close.
