The meat did look good, gravy maybe hinting at some added flour/cornflour.

A can of cold coke, ideally just before freezing point, is nice after a tasty hot chunky beef pie.
I try not do it as much as I used to, and when you have a decent break from it and then indulge again, it is a clear reminder just how much sugar is in that can. |

About 2 months ago I was travelling trough Mortlake (Vic) with a friend and we stopped at Clarke's Pies/Bakery and I had a pastie for lunch; I think I actually bought a meat/veggies pastie (rather than a vegetarian pastie that I would normally buy if I wanted a pastie). It was nice. Clarke's seems to have a good reputation.
(I also saw, just at the end of the town, an old, wooden, white-with-black-letters-numbers road sign. I saw a similar one in Bendigo a few months ago, both relics from many, many decades ago. The Bendigo road sign had been installed in pre-metric days and the digits for the distances had been altered from miles to kms. I couldn't believe it when I saw it, still there today and surely a heath and safety hazard for when it eventually falls over and maims someone ........ ) |

Has anyone ever tried this cake (Death by Chocolate) at San Churro? 5700kj per slice. I occasionally have the churros and smaller cakes there.
I had a nice apple crumble from the Orford Pantry on Saturday. They have a reasonable selection of pies and pastries for a small place. It’s a good spot to stop for the view. I have no photographic evidence of the cake, but here’s a photo of the view on the other side of the road, looking north towards Royal National Park, late afternoon.

Lovely spot, lovely cake.
There was a place out round corner Dural many moons ago selling the best Black Forest Gateau complete with proper chocolate shards covering the sides. Your pic remindered me of that.

Good pie eating weather here at the moment so dropped by Butlers Bakery in Wang for a couple quickly consumed beauties outside the quarry.
NB. one handed approach and absence of sauce. A real mans ice donut (didn't have any pink ones left) awaits to be had with afternoon coffee.

I visited the local Baker’s Delight today to get the bread. Apart from their hot cross buns (when in season) and cream buns (which i have to travel further to buy as the local store doesn’t make them) I don’t usually buy their cakes. But they had something different today. It was the weird combination of a raspberry scone with passion fruit icing, so I bought 4 of them; the 4th one was free. The unanimous opinion of all 4 reviewers (wife, daughter and son-in-law) was a big thumbs up.

I still want you to review the “Death by Chocolate” cake from San Churro. There are none of the franchises near me and it’s not legit enough a need to travel over where you found them.

Ok, I’ll get one when I’m there next time. But at 5700kj per slice, I’m cutting it into several slices, and it will be a taste test only. I’ve been working from home for nearly a year and a half and the more frequent visits to the bakery for lunch are taking their toll.

OK so this Bakery visit was back a week or so.
I had to take a pic for this thread. My pastie was mega thick of crust but inside there was no veg...she was more like a sausage roll as a pastie shape. Tasty but didnt hit the mark. The missus chose one with mushy pies. This is what was pulled from the bag Her verdict...hmmm it was ok, wouldnt go another one, they should have called it a pie with mince and peas. The bakery is in Hughenden. Might be a favourite for some so get in there and enjoy but not for us that day. However there is a place I would recommend. I wish i took a coupla pics of the food from our previous stop in Richmond, really good pastries at a little place run from the side entrance of a home. It was called Treats for your Table. Well worth searching for them if passing thru |

Yeah, there’s a too much pastry on those for me. You make a good point. I rate the pies at my favourite bakery at 9.0 out of 10 on average, but sometimes I’ll get one that isn’t up to normal standard, even as low as 7.5. Time of day plays a part too. If it’s been sitting in the oven too long on a slow business day you can get a dud.

It's difficult to find good ones these days.
The authentic ones like grandma's recipe are even rarer. For that reason, I'd be almost certain that you'd be disappointed with one if you tried it.

True, i think most just don't know how to make a proper 'Cornish' Pastie, a monster Cornish Pastie with Mushy Peas and Mash was a dinner in it's self when i was a young un, Mum, Grandma's and Aunts used to make them out of leftovers so it was always a mystery what you would get but they were always huge......and delicious!!
