Where I am in NZ, 91 is $2.39 and 98 is $2.62.
Diesel is $1.75/litre plus $68 per 1000km mileage tax.
I was contemplating buying a new or ex demo VW Amarok. I'm now spending 1/5 of that and picking up a TD5 Discovery and unhooking the odometer. Easy & cheap.

At what petrol pricepoint would members here, start to consider a more economical car as a daily driver for their next car?

$2.00 a litre, $2.25 ?

With soaring gas and electricity prices to contend with as well, it certainly takes a toil on living expenses for many average wage earners.

Personally, I think that a boycott has merit and could apply pressure to suppliera if it were organised correctly.

Eg: A mass boycott of all service stations for a 24 hour period would be useless. It would have little to no effect.

If every user boycotted a specified supplier for the period of 7 days (or longer). The loss of sales and market share may put pressure on suppliers to offer cheaper prices..

It may or may not work. But, keep in mind, that we're achieving zero by doing nothing....

Driving and filling up in Europe atm and it is easy to understand why they tend to drive manual small displacement diesels and petrols - i use 15l/100 in Oz and 5l/100 driving a 3cyl turbo petrol here.

so you don't buy petrol on that day. so what? the day after you still go and spend your money. what have you achieved?

if anything you make the situation worse. most servos are franchises who have contracted to sell a certain amount of fuel. the Oil companies are going to insist they still spend the same, but their income is less. it's not the oil companies that are going to be hurt by any embargo like this.

I don't think that one day will make a difference, but as I said, from little things big things grow.
How would, for example, buying only from independents go; or boycotting, say, Shell or Caltex for a week or two. It would hurt them.

Should start a national boycott of shell/Coles express. Their prices are so uncompetitive , it’s as if they intend to go out of business, may as well give them what they want and make them close sooner

Damn right. Always at least 5c or more expensive than anyone else. Not to mention they charge 23c extra for 98 when other servo's charge 16c extra.

They provide zero competition to the others. And competition is what helps prices drop.

Also, the next day when you need fuel, the servo can put another 20cpl on it which you will have to pay

Boycott will help the retailer not the consumer.

Funny the very first post in this thread stated that 'we're looking down the barrel of fuel being $2.00 per litre by the end of the year'.

That was posted in 2008, 10 years ago, and it still is way off that figure

Also imagine if the day of the proposed boycott that the fuel price was at its cyclical low point.
Does anyone honestly think that they wouldn't buy it a the low price that day just because of the 'boycott'?

The oil producers and oil companies are only shooting themselves in the foot long term with increased pricing.

When petrol prices rose years ago... We had no choice (except LPG), and we were all forced to pay the price.

Now there are alternatives.

With Hybrid and electric cars now on the scene... Further rises will only force more people into them sooner, hurting the oil companies.

Right now tbh. Back in 2004 we bought a little Echo, and so dodged the last fuel price shock with it's 6L/100km (as opposed to a Falcon or Commodore). Today you can buy near new or new Prius C, Hybrid Corolla that do around 4L/100km - compared to running around in a Territory it's 1/3 of the price. Savings per year for household I calculate at about $3500 or so. Short trips to shops or work or beach (done frequently) can possibly cost zero in fuel. Will eat 91 happily, up to E10 too. What I'd really like to see would be a PHEV version of Corolla, say 50km range, fuel cost for what we drive would be very reduced.

Electricity, bills have been quartered with solar and battery banks will reduce more as batteries become more affordable.

Gas - that's the clusterf*ck. It seems Aussie gas is sent overseas at pennies and then re-imported at market rates to the East Coast, and prices have risen greatly (correct me if this is wrong). Here, a national reserve of a national asset would benefit the people greatly.

Probably more dangerous is the fall in AUD as crude pricing has risen (priced in USD). It's a double whammy. Looks like the Fed will raise rates again on Wednesday (making USD even more attractive, reducing the USD floating around out there thus increasing it's relative value). If that holds, then the currency aspect of our fuel & import pricing squeeze should continue.

I would simply drive my v8 less and my 4 cylinder more. But if went silly high I would drive my 4 cylinder less too. Might even encourage my to ride a push bike. If that happens it could be compared to smokes going up! Smokes go up quit = better health! Petrol goes up cycle = health better! We might all end up like Asia.. on bikes.

What gets me is those people who buy fuel efficient cars to save money...

Then go and buy bottled water which costs more than a litre of petrol.

For God's sake, at least here in Melbourne, we have what is probably the best tap drinking water in the world... Its not Bali or Africa.

Funny enough the gfc put a stop to that. Crude tumbled so cheap fuel. Now with crude going back up and the dollar at 72c expect it keep going up unless the opec start pumping more barrels or the world goes into it's next recession.

I do think there is a few cents here and there that can be trimmed to keep the price slightly lower. Or the market will move to more fuel efficient cars.

If there was a decent priced electric car (conventional looking and range) I'd shell out for one as a daily driver. I get free parking at work so really running costs are a fraction of what is paid now (using PT as it is 1/6 of the price).
