Where I am in NZ, 91 is $2.39 and 98 is $2.62.
Diesel is $1.75/litre plus $68 per 1000km mileage tax. I was contemplating buying a new or ex demo VW Amarok. I'm now spending 1/5 of that and picking up a TD5 Discovery and unhooking the odometer. Easy & cheap. |

It's not going to be just fuel that's going to be squeezed.. The more of everything that gets sold overseas, reduces our countries ability to supply ourselves. The rest of what remains closes the door as they can't afford to keep going. So the more we rely on imports, and the handouts of others. Read into the strawberry debacle a bit deeper.. Or do I need an alfoil hat?? I'm only a fitter in a concrete factory, but the future scares the crap out of me. Ed

At what petrol pricepoint would members here, start to consider a more economical car as a daily driver for their next car?
$2.00 a litre, $2.25 ? With soaring gas and electricity prices to contend with as well, it certainly takes a toil on living expenses for many average wage earners. |

Eg: A mass boycott of all service stations for a 24 hour period would be useless. It would have little to no effect. If every user boycotted a specified supplier for the period of 7 days (or longer). The loss of sales and market share may put pressure on suppliers to offer cheaper prices.. It may or may not work. But, keep in mind, that we're achieving zero by doing nothing.... |

if anything you make the situation worse. most servos are franchises who have contracted to sell a certain amount of fuel. the Oil companies are going to insist they still spend the same, but their income is less. it's not the oil companies that are going to be hurt by any embargo like this. |

Think about it. This 'plan' will do the exact opposite to what we want.

I don't think that one day will make a difference, but as I said, from little things big things grow. How would, for example, buying only from independents go; or boycotting, say, Shell or Caltex for a week or two. It would hurt them. |

Should start a national boycott of shell/Coles express. Their prices are so uncompetitive , it’s as if they intend to go out of business, may as well give them what they want and make them close sooner

They provide zero competition to the others. And competition is what helps prices drop. |

Boycott will help the retailer not the consumer.

Funny the very first post in this thread stated that 'we're looking down the barrel of fuel being $2.00 per litre by the end of the year'.
That was posted in 2008, 10 years ago, and it still is way off that figure |

Also imagine if the day of the proposed boycott that the fuel price was at its cyclical low point.
Does anyone honestly think that they wouldn't buy it a the low price that day just because of the 'boycott'? |

The oil producers and oil companies are only shooting themselves in the foot long term with increased pricing.
When petrol prices rose years ago... We had no choice (except LPG), and we were all forced to pay the price. Now there are alternatives. With Hybrid and electric cars now on the scene... Further rises will only force more people into them sooner, hurting the oil companies. |

Electricity, bills have been quartered with solar and battery banks will reduce more as batteries become more affordable. Gas - that's the clusterf*ck. It seems Aussie gas is sent overseas at pennies and then re-imported at market rates to the East Coast, and prices have risen greatly (correct me if this is wrong). Here, a national reserve of a national asset would benefit the people greatly. Probably more dangerous is the fall in AUD as crude pricing has risen (priced in USD). It's a double whammy. Looks like the Fed will raise rates again on Wednesday (making USD even more attractive, reducing the USD floating around out there thus increasing it's relative value). If that holds, then the currency aspect of our fuel & import pricing squeeze should continue.

I would simply drive my v8 less and my 4 cylinder more. But if went silly high I would drive my 4 cylinder less too. Might even encourage my to ride a push bike. If that happens it could be compared to smokes going up! Smokes go up quit = better health! Petrol goes up cycle = health better! We might all end up like Asia.. on bikes.

As I have no car debt it would need to reach $5 a litre before I stop using my V8.

What gets me is those people who buy fuel efficient cars to save money...
Then go and buy bottled water which costs more than a litre of petrol. For God's sake, at least here in Melbourne, we have what is probably the best tap drinking water in the world... Its not Bali or Africa. |

I do think there is a few cents here and there that can be trimmed to keep the price slightly lower. Or the market will move to more fuel efficient cars.
