“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

Thanks sideways! The cloning was super easy to do.

In other news, I went out to RAAF Base Amberley today to check out their new Heritage Centre.

Was a fantastic day.

Some things of note - A8-113 is going up to live at Darwin. I got a peek inside the refinishing hangar which is currently housing RF111 A8-126 which it is getting redone in camo colours. Looks fantastic, as does 113.

The jets lined up in a row are destined for a complete restoration and will be lent to various private museums around Australia, which is great news.

Also, I had always wondered why they destroyed all the TF30's. Even the jets on display only had the intake fan and afterburners fitted. A chap explained it to me today - Iran is still running their F14's, which take the TF30, so they didn't want any spares etc getting to them. Makes sense.

Hello aviation followers....I was at "The round about" today ( Melb Airport ) taking a few snaps when I noticed a brown smear on this Qantas. Can anyone tell me why this has occurred? Interestingly it's only on one side of the undercarriage

That appears to be symtoms of a hydraulics leak from the left wheel well.

You can see another one near the APU exhaust

I checked this threat out from time to time. I notice that (i think) near all Planes are commerically made.
My aviation interest is at a grass roots level, that is homebuilt aircraft. I don,t have a homebuilt plane , does anyone here have one? You can build an airplane that can cruise at 120kts from yuor garage, and some have just a VW engine in them.

There are ultralights and there are kitplanes...

Some kitplanes fall into the ultralight category (I think it used to be 750kg and below?) while other kitplanes can be registered on the VH register (normal category light aircraft).

Have seen a few homebuilts in the past and they truely scared me a to how flimsy and aweful the design was.
(the Jabiru was one which truely made my mind boggle).

You can get kit planes which can cruise well above 200knots as well, mind you these are pretty complex as well and certainly not something to be tackled lightly.

Ultralights also have a very poor safety record too, usually because the pilots that fly them arent trained to a very "professional" standard, are too over confident, or more frequently have engine failures as the engine they use are pretty rubbish.

Be wary of "kits" to as like everything else they usually dont give you the full story when buying them.. ie: the kit is "only" $30 000.... but they fail to mention that you need to buy other things like engines, instruments and the relevent paperwork jungle...

is problerbly one of those scary light planes. But a Cassult is ultralight , is steel framed , and is an old design that is still used of racing, so i think there are some more stable planes around. But if anyone is realy interested in grass roots stuff, check out the movie "those magnificent men in there flying machines" ,unbeliveable.

In essence your right, in the days of the Wright Bros, average guys built their own aircraft at home and they tried to teach themselves to fly! Most never got off the ground or ended up killing themselves.

It was very much "ultralight" in those days until the idea caught on commercially and people could see that money could be made from it (airmail initialy), then of course its military value!
