I can sit for my HR license in march, Victorian one though obviously, is it something you can transfer across states?

That fuel/lube run doesn't sound too bad, its on the list.

i think it's any machine under 3t is a fork ticket but in south oz you can get a tele handler ticket up to 3t. anything over that and you need forklift and non slew crane tickets.

If i was to get my HR licence would you say I could walk into a mine job in 3-4 years?? Got young kids now so dont want to go untill they get a bit older

I respect you guys for wanting to do the hard yards

but I wouldn't give up my job to bust the hard yards personally, I go to work, do 4 hours of my 12 hour shift, and sleep, wake up, sign off, go home

just saying :P

Phew just finished reading this entire thread. What a roller coaster of a ride is all I can say.

Like many I'm also looking for a clear plan of attack at getting into this industry, but after reading all that I can't say I'm any closer. Looks like I need to really think outside the square and do something like pay someone to meet me and realize what a great guy I am (lol), and then vouch for me when a position comes up internally. What say you guys in the industry. Wanna be my friend?

On a more serious note do you think a good portion of the paid courses are a waste of time from a greenskin perspective? After all the training providers are selling a service so sometimes it's a little hard to get and objective answer from them. You don't have to go very far to find someone who's paid $5000 for a dump truck course (with promises), and is no closer to actually driving one.

I'm booked on a $3000 Shot Firers course but now I'm beginning to think that for a 5 day course why wouldn't they just send someone along to be unskilled as they need them? Someone like an assistant or someone already in the crew who already knows the culture, the industry and is already employed in the field. I can still get a full refund so would be interested to see what you guys in the business think.

Apologies if this is off topic and a bit long winded but I just had to post something after that marathon read.

Straight up you won't go wrong with a shotfirers course.. the really BIG bucks is to follow that up with an OCE ticket, but expect to spend mucho dollars and the studying will truly test your resolve.

Whats an OCE ticket?

Also aren't shot firers courses state specific? Or have they brought in the national standard sorta thing now?

I'm starting uni at curtin uni (bentley then kalgoorlie) in mining and surveying engineering is it worth trying for vacation work during semester brakes also is it overly diificult getting a graduate position or are there easier less time consuming ways of getting in with a decent job that isn't too hard on a physical note???

Mate from what I have seen the geos and surveyors have to get around a bit...mining is physical. Im mech Eng and if I am underground all day im buggered by the end of it and I am of "normal" fitness etc

Mining Engineers (students) have it slightly tougher, they are down everyday. I can do that too but atleast have the choice.

You guys coming into it now have a good advantage, my uni didnt even (and still doesnt) have a mining course.

Im doing Vac work now, and while it doesnt guarantee a job they do fill their grad positions with vac's first. Vac is a chance to show how you work and to see if you fit the company.

since i'm doing both the engineering and surveying i should be able to do the 2 jobs in one hit that normally takes 2 men to do as i will be qualified in the two areas so that should boost my prospect of getting a job i reckon. thanks for the info Polyal but what exactly does a mining engineer graduate do as from what the uni site says there are several areas in the industry i can go into. and do they give graduates several areas to work to see what best suits the person?

When i was at Curragh the dec hol break for uni students was a smorgasbord for me

Definately give it a shot mate , lots of cash and experiences to be had...

Open Cut Examiner (flash fourby, look at the ground, agree with engineers about how to move forward with gettin the black gold out the ground?)

Pretty sure blast ops are nationwide accredited now due to past incidents???

In reality stuff all...but it depends on what year you are. Im 4th so I have been given a project to do that has been on the burner for them for a while and its actually pretty beneficial to them.

1st years dont get much responsibility, and nor should they really.

Vac is all about seeing if you can hack the conditions.

haha well references from previous jobs at virgin blue, menzies, ALG and the like all say i over work my self. e.g. what normally takes a week to complete i get done in about 3 days.

Your not quite getting it but thats ok. Talking yourself up wont get you far either, miners will be all over that. Best thing to do is get in early and apply for everything. If your lucky enough to get a place see how it goes and you will quickly work out if the industry is for you or not.

There is atleast a few 1st year mining engineers who are rethinking what they want after doing it. Thats what it really is for, because you have no idea until you are here, it really is a different world.

I am now looking seriously into the mines, i have just completed my plumbing trade (wrong trade for the mines!). I can't find anything at the moment but have construction experience on many different levels, operators tickets, confined spaces etc. Happy to take entry role if it's fulltime. Want to get my foot in the door and work my way up from there.

Also got a mate trying to get in, ex-military with brickie trade aswell. He got jipped by www.miningaustralia.com.au, paid them over $200 and received a pdf file on mining!

I was thinking of taking a trip to Perth in search of mine work?

I was discussing getting a HR license with a workmate who is an ex truck driver, he said not to bother with roadranger because everything modern is all syncro these days anyways?

The guys in the truck thread are saying I should still go for roadranger test though, leaning more towards them.

Also another mate wants to know if they have any positions in the mines for office/administrator type work?

its not all just digging holes.. plenty of support jobs behind the scenes...
