That's the reason Euros and other cars with fancy **** and huge price tags depreciate so much on the second hand market - repair and maintenance costs.

Put it into perspective - on my E38 735iL, basic service items

8x Ignition coils
8x Spark plugs
2x CMP (common fault on BMW M62 V8)
1x Fuel filter
1x Air filter
1x Oil filter
2x Cabin filters

Cost $1100 trade price to me, all aftermarket stuff, not genuine and that wasn't even including fluids, I have a 30 day account with the supplier as well, the fuel filter was $250 alone because it also has the fuel pressure regulator built into it

Then it needed something like 0W-30 or 0W-20 oil that was a special order in through Burson from Penrite, and had some special synthetic hydraulic fluid it used for the power steering that it shares with the self levelling suspension on the rear, no cheap ATF or power steering fluid there

Oh and the reason I bought it, it came into my workshop with a faulty alternator and the RRP on the replacement was $2300 just for the alternator, then it took about 10+ hours to replace because its water cooled and housed inside the engine block.

As you can imagine, there's not too many brushless 180A water cooled alternators floating around at IGA.

The customer was like - I don't want to pay $2300 for the alternator, give me $2000 and you can have the whole car

It only had around 120,000km on it when it crapped out its alternator, then by the time I got rid of it, it had worn its timing chain guides by around 130,000km and was a bit noisy on startup until the timing chain tensioner took up the slack.

In comparison, my Caprice that replaced the E38 735iL:

1x Ignition coil
8x Spark Plugs
1x Ignition lead set
All accessory belts
1x fuel filter
1x air filter
1x oil filter
(no cabin filters)
(no CMP)

$350 all up for genuine stuff from Holden dealership, again I have a 30 day account with them.

If you had gone to rockauto.com those BMW parts would have come to around $600. Penrite LDAS hydro oil for the suspension at around $40/litre, and Penrite $15/litre HPR5 will do for the engine.

Stand by for Mercury T to buy an X5 only for the 4.4 V8 to do a timing chain or the 4.8 V8 start burning oil due to leaking valve stem seals then coming on AFF to take his frustration out on Ford owners.

My $1250 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 Hemi V8 has had over $3k worth of Rockauto parts thrown into it…. they send out a fridge magnet with each order, and I have a lot of fridge magnets!

$24 for a new shock absorber????

Its even got a winch so your local independent auto repairer can drag it into the workshop without needing to grab the guys next door to help push it in after it comes in from the tow truck.

When I think v8s I think overpriced old holden and fords, and the more modern GM LSx in commos and the ford 5.0 and so on in XR8s in newer falcons.

I think the bargains are toyota 1uz, merc and to a lesser extent bmw.

Because I already DIY BMWs I'd be looking at a 540i. E39s are cheap and I'd prefer that over a 90s E series falcon.

If I wasn't a DIYer then something toyota. If I hadn't already invested in BMW then mercs are the cheapest relatively common ones.

I prefer i6 over v8s and that's the only reason I went bmw over merc when I wanted to test the waters with a euro marque. Would have gone merc instead of bmw if I preferred v8s

What about a E30 with a LS engine? I've seen a few done on youtube now and the owners are very happy with them.

E30s aren't really a value car now. Should have stocked up on e30s 5ish years ago when they were $3k.

There's a few e39 4.4L 540s for around $10k. Not the biggest fan of the E39, but they look better than that jag.

E: they're(540i) also likely to have timing chain guide failures, them and jags are for DIYers. Toyota and then merc are the safest bet for non diyers.

The way I usually search gumtree autos is no marque set at all, no description. Just set a price limit of 5k (set to 15k in the above link), set engine or trans and scroll scroll scroll. That way finds incorrectly listed stuff too.

Commos and fords cheaper than I expected, a general search like this reminds my of things I've forgotten for s asec, like 300c, landrovers, and suprising a couple of old domestics etc.

Personally as said above I'd go merc s500 or toyota. I missed all the drama and backstory on franco's bmw because it all happened during the first half of the GF

I nearly bought a 540i Msport last year. They go hard, better than the paper figures suggest.
Just sold my E32 740i. M60B40 probably the last decent engine BMW made with no major faults and minimal use of plastic. I told the new owner I'd drop the sump and check the oil pump mounts before he took it (two M8 nuts and one bolt), as these are known to come loose. The bolt was lying in the sump and looked to be sitting in there for some time.

Those WJ Grand Cherokee seem to go alright.

E39 LS3. There was one here advertised not long ago, was VERY tempted. Manual too. Around $20k if I recall correctly.

Did some research, whilst its a popular swap, there are a lot of pitfalls that the youtubers don't tell you about. In the end, wasn't brave enough to take the punt.

They were more than double the price of an Fpv GT when new, now they nearly half the cost of one.
