It's a retraction, like asking a murderer to say sorry then it will be all good.

Yes it's from 2013, but it's still...um...different.

You've got to love the politicians over there. Guns at all costs.

You can be on the no fly list and still no background checks allowed.

There are a couple terrorist watch lists covering over a million people. The no fly list is a sub-set of of one of those 2 groups and covers about 64K people. Somewhere around 2% of that 64K are US citizens. Only US citizens can legally purchase firearms in the US. These roughly ~1300 US citizens on the no fly list still must undergo a background check in order to purchase a firearm. The reason for this provision is due to the realization that some folks, about 800, are wrongly on the no fly list and many of those are not aware of this, specifically one of their rights is being withheld. Going through the background check process will alert these folks to the need to go through due process to have their names removed and their right re-instated.

Do some folks skirt the intent of the law? Yes.

This is the closest I am going to come to a political statement on this topic, as I did not join AFF to get into political discussions, but the no fly list was used as a political wedge by 1 party during one of the most ridiculous election cycles in what we call "the free world".

I couldn't read the article. The page just would not load for some reason.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if the article got a detail or 2 wrong. There is a lot of mis-information in the news here these days, especially from many blog sites. Unfortunately, some folks in the main stream news agencies will pick bits and pieces from the blogs.

Yes, often there is confusion about the terrorist watch lists and the no fly list. Probably because the no fly list is considered a subset of one of them.

If one of the terrorist tried to purchase a weapon legally, they will get caught, assuming someone didn't drop the ball. The ball have been dropped quite a few times, unfortunately.

Cheers.

It wasn't GasO's article I was reading, just something I stumbled on and don't know who it was.

Doesn't matter, you cleared it up.

I think there is a bigger societal and psychological issue at hand than just blaming guns. What is it that is causing mainly young men to commit mass shootings?

I'm not against responsible gun ownership but perhaps some common sense can be applied. Is there a need for such "high capacity" rounds and weapons with the ability to fire such a large amount of bullets in a short amount of time? Can there be a better licensing or registration system that limits the sale of semi-automatics to those who pass a license graduation program? E.g. Learner- P plate style system?

I definitely was concerned for my safety when this shooting occurred in the exact same terminal I was in a couple of days before hand. Story below:

It is proof that democracy is the worst possible system except for all the others.

Trying to reduce the number of guns in society and remove those that have no recreational purpose seems such a simple proposition. But the NRA have politicians by the cohones so they won't act.

When Charlton Heston said "out of my cold dead hand" he wasn't holding the gun that is the problem.

For all his faults, Howard had the courage of his convictions and Australia is better for it.

I'm definitely happy to live in our democracy, could be a lot worse compared to other "democracies" around the world though, in most ways Australia is still the lucky country (well other than losing our locally made rwd's dohh lol).

cheers, Maka

CNN does lie, often. They will retract statements but the damage is often already done. CNN's problem is that they lie by omission. Something Fox news used to and probably is still known for. The difference being that Fox admits it is conservative and plays to that audience. CNN claims to be non-biased but I think everyone knows that isn't true. They are clearly anti-gun where Fox is very much pro-gun.

In Australia once our cops did not have guns, all was fine back then because men were men but then the cops had to have guns because society became worse.
I never felt the need to defend myself with a gun but now maybe I should the way Australia is heading, a pistol with a 22 type not to kill anyone but enough to make them high tail it.
And why is this because Australia's trash people are on the increase and the law is a joke because it supports all the rat bags full on, not to mention that all the rat bags have guns and the good people don't have a right to defend them selves from drug f ed trash, who can get off free because they was high and did not know or responsible for what they did.

Cable.
As opposed to broadcast.

Continuous lies is a stretch. That would be infowars who are claiming this shooting and Sandy hook were a lie and actors were used.
Something needs to be done with regards to these sites imo. I'm not into regulating speech as a rule but that crap is beyond the pale and somehow there are people that believe it.
I note YouTube has temp banned them but that won't stop them.

Geez, I would have thought the hundreds of Tonne's of cocaine that comes into the US via Miami,Florida would be considered more 'dangerous' than porn.

I don't Mick (the best musician in the Rolling Stones) Taylor.

What we see these days is more videoed violence, the world is not inherently more dangerous.

Those in authority need guns, those not in authority should have to justify why they want a particular gun.

I meant to say I don't agree with you.

Fewer guns in society are a better thing.

In the days of westward expansion of the US, the rate of accidental death was ten-to-one to those killed by Indians.

These days in the US hundreds of thousands are killed by accident and mishap, very few gun deaths relate to the good guy triumphing over the bad guy.

Scared of what is outside? Go to a mosque, go to street markets in areas you wouldn't go and be smart about your personal safety.

What's different about this compared to other school shootings is these kids are getting organised and coming out and saying enough of this ****.

The fact that it is still in the news cycle let alone putting on the pressure on companies to cut ties with the NRA is something else.

I know the companies only do it for their own ends and it probably won't change a lot but it's something they can build on.

The only problem is do they have the stamina to keep it up and really make it an election issue like I said earlier.

At the end of the day if their bum on the seat is in danger, I have no doubt the politicians on either side will mostly drop the NRA without hesitation

Sure one should have to justify why they need a gun, the Cops in QLD were justified in having them when it came into being, because of the rat bags that were getting about on drugs or mental.

I can only talk about from the 1960's on as I have seen it.

I am for others wellbeing from such thugs.

I would say that anyone who thinks it's better nowadays must not be getting around much, take the gold coast or Brisbane 1970's 80's were great but from about the 1990's some moronic bums started hanging about in the city of Brisbane and from then on the jerks started getting about, some bouncers who wanted only to bash people were about and from about 2010 on it has got real bad with kids on drugs in little gangs looking for the opportunity to attack some person and kick their head in or to try steal the eye out of a needle are everywhere now.
People with business have been targeted by organised drug gangs wanting a cut etc and the real problem was the Government that do hide the reality of all this crap going on and many things are still being hidden, it's like as if they are trying to work as hard as they can to create a mongrel generation of misfits, who think they are an authority themselves and think they can disregard the cops authority.

You should try being a cop one day bro and try wake up to yourself and come to the reality of what some have to put up with.
The government pandering to the criminals and just disregarding the people who have been done wrong by.

I should wake up to myself?

Watch your tone boy.
