HO was originally intended to mean High Output, but later in the game changed it to Handling Option to keep the insurance companies happy, hence why they also kept the quoted power the same as the regular GT's 300 hp, even though it made a lot more. Also kept Holden guessing.

May have also been done to keep the government unaware.

Not sure how authoritative Wikipedia is, to be honest. It's too much of a coincidence that European high performance Fords were also badged XRs.

This has been discussed many times over on mecurycougar.net and classic cougar forums. There is a lot of folklore but nothing definitive.

The experimental racing theory is the most widely accepted but doesn't correlate with the fact that Mercury raced the base model and the XR-7 was the luxury version - announced as the "royal new Cougar"

""Mercury now had its own pony car, and set out to make a serious dent in that market in the late Sixties. The Cougar XR7 (XR for "experimental racing", and the "7" from the early "T-7" designation?) was introduced as a luxury trim package with overhead consoles, toggle switches, leather seats, and wood grained steering wheels.""

wikipidia is your friend:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XR_(Ford_Australia)

The term XR, first coined in 1991 on the EB Falcon, is a term used to describe some high-performance Ford vehicles in Australia. A common misconception about the designation is that it was borrowed from Ford Europe where it stands for 'Experimental Research', when, in fact, it was a tribute to the 1966 XR Falcon, the first Falcon model to offer a V8 engine option.[1] The first XR's were the XR6, S-XR6 and XR8 (these names were applied to the more performance oriented Ford Falcons) and the XR2 (Ford Capri). The number after the "XR" is used on Falcons to designate the amount of cylinders the cars engine has. Showed following are the cars that the XR name has been applied to

Wow the XR50 must have a big engine.......

Wiki is written by random internerds and is often very wrong or at least agenda focussed.

I had a laugh at the war between a GT zealot and a F6 zealot a few years ago when they got upset over each other stating that their "precious" was quicker than the other's. The page was edited with contradicting text almost hourly.

That statement on Wikipedia claiming that "XR" was named after the XR Falcon had a cited source from a carsales article. Click on it and read it on the linked article.

Quote:
The 1980s were barren times for fans of Blue Oval performance Down Under. Ford’s axing of the legendary 302 and 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8s in 1983, when the full-size XE model was out-stripping the smaller Commodore in the sales race, left the Falcon brand without a halo car.

Australian performance enthusiasts were therefore forced towards Holden’s Commodore, its V8 somehow adapting to survive not only the change to unleaded fuel in 1986, but the introduction of a cleaner, greener electronic age.

By 1991, the fuel injected 5.0-litre V8 in the VN Series Commodore was a smooth and potent performer that had no discernable local competition. Additionally its unbroken competition pedigree developed a legion of young followers whose automotive loyalties were decided on street cred and race results.

Ford had no choice but to act, and the 5.0-litre (actually 4949cc) Mustang V8 motor found its way under the EB Series Falcon’s bonnet. To celebrate the return of the V8, Ford introduced a new model based on the Falcon S-Pack and initially known as the S-XR8. The ‘XR’ nameplate was a neat nod back to the first Aussie Falcon to gain V8 motivation, the XR range of 1966.

Now 20 years on from the S-XR8, the XR badge lives on as the pinnacle of Ford performance, and here we celebrate four of the most significant models.

That article would ignore the fact that XR was Ford's global performance derivative designation, not just in the US but in Europe and South Africa.

The first XR8 was the South African Sierra in 1984 http://www.sierra-xr8.co.uk/about_th...ut_the_XR8.htm and the numerical designation can be from several sources, not just the number of cylinders

There is no way I would reference a carsales article as definitive. More than likely the product developers could get the tooling for the badges cheap so they decided to go with the XR designation

Am sure the XR2 was a Fiesta not Capri. XR3 was the Escort. Back when those cars were new my uncle was managing director of Ford Truck company UK. He drove an XR3 with the Ghia interiour that was specally made for him and his wife had an XR2 with Ghia interiour that was made specally for her. Both were colored a gun metal grey colour that was not available for those cars. Would have been worth a bit back then. He did actually have a one off custom 2.8 injection Capri, and a couple of Cosworths along the way.
