I take no responsibility for the accuracy of this Wiki info of road fatality data collected by the World Health Organisation.
Australian road deaths in 2012 were 5.2 per 100,000 inhabitants and 7 per 100,000 vehicles. French road deaths in 2013 were 4.9 per 100,000 inhabitants and 8.5 per 100,000 vehicles. German road deaths in 2013 were 4.3 per 100,000 inhabitants and 6.9 per 100,000 vehicles. USA road deaths in 2012 were 11.6 per 100,000 inhabitants and 13.6 per 100,000 vehicles. There is no basis for me to say this but it appears countries like Australia and the USA who have strong enforcement of speed restrictions don’t fair any or much better than those with more liberal interpretations. Of course there are many other factors at play here, cause of accident, driver education, road network condition, terrain, weather conditions, average vehicle age and inbuilt vehicle safety, incorporated percentage of pedestrian and cyclist related deaths and I would suggest that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Europe as a whole does have the lowest death rate in the world. Africa has the highest. |
