It's true...

Quote:
Christchurch has been rocked by one of the biggest aftershocks since February 22.

The 5.1 magnitude shake was 10km deep, centred 10km east of Christchurch, at 9.34pm.

The aftershock was the biggest since a 4.8 magnitude on March 5.

A magnitude 3 quake struck only four minutes earlier 5km deep and 10km west of Lyttelton.

Police have received no reports of damage from the 5.1 rumble. But residents with already frayed nerves scurried to safety under tables and doors.
In the grand scheme of things, these may be put down as Aftershocks, but these are earthquakes in their own right. 5.1 on the Richter Scale? That's a bloody Earthquake of large proportions in my book.

A 5.1 is actually reasonably tame. Unless you were inside a structure you would hardly feel it.

I was outside checking the state of the house after the first earthquake in September (7.1) when the first aftershock hit a 5.6 magnitude, it was about 5am and was a very quiet and still morning and the only indication of an earthquake was a low rumble and the neighbours windows rattling. I couldn't actually feel any shaking.

There is a big difference between 7's and 5's (especially if your inside). A 5 just makes you stop and think "hmmm... earthquake" and a 7 you don't have time to think as your too busy "hanging on for the ride".

Yes, what an interesting last 8 months. Feburary finished it for me. Not only did I lose a friend in the quake, I also lost my business and alot of stock. I have now shut the doors and selling whats left on trademe and moving up to Waikato to work for Ford Haven doing all the resto work.
