I've shot a 9.3x62mm which is a popular sambar caliber and it's quite unpleasant.

7mm rem mag is going to be my next caliber for sure

I don't hunt deer but I'm sure most hunters will harvest what they need and leave them for the elements.

I scalp foxes i shoot, $10 bounty for each one.

Once I get a bigger rifle I'll take steps towards getting a few

Spot on.
Just more expensive. It's an addiction believe me, I swear I can hear them telling me to take them home when I visit my local gun shop...

Walk in to buy reloading supplies, walk out with a Remington .22 for no particular reason.. every time...

So far so good, scope came with the air rifle as a package in the same box, it's a Nitro Piston Air rifle, I could have got a spring piston for $100 less, but they vibrate heaps and destroy scopes. A lot less vibration with a Nitro piston gun.

The scope is a Centrepoint 4x32, I think it's adequate for the gun, as long as it holds up. It's made to air rifle specs and I believe (hope) that it should stay together considering it came as a package with the air rifle.

Rabbits is what I am after the most as I take take them home as dog food, dogs love them, goats we have eaten but taste like crap IMO and we don't really shoot them any more as they are just plain dumb animals and no real challenge (and they get rounded up and sold to the middle east these days so make money for farmers in some cases), pigs stay where they are and get eaten by scavengers in about a day or two, same with foxes, they are feral pests and farmers hate them destroying crops and fences and dams.

Deer would be for meat, my local butcher makes jerky and biltong out of deer plus deer meat (venison) is considered a delicacy , but I am not that good a hunter to have harvested a deer yet.

That's what happened with my fishing gear. Now I've got at least 16 rods and even more reels.
Walk into BCF for some hooks, walk out with a rod, 2 reels and 2 rolls of braid. Forgot the hooks. Worse than Bunnings.

Do you skin the rabbits or just give them to the dogs whole? Our Rottweiler has started killing a few rabbits now we've moved to the farm. We keep finding pieces. I have been concerned about giving the dog rabbits as they have been covered in flees.
If I ever shoot a deer I'll keep a leg or two for eating and get some more for the dog.
Venison on the Weber should be nice.

the rabbits i shoot are thrown in the bush down the back of my property, there would be 50+ down there, a real bone orchid. ive never smelt them.

foxes will leave bits of rabbit laying around. and be mind full that rabbits are baited, so it could kill your dog. i used to bait and changed to shooting because bait is very expensive, it can affect other animals and i have livestock. if you bait you must by law notify your neighbors that you are baiting. just sayin.

No one around here baits them, but in some other places they might.

There is not that many around any more, there seems to be more in town where you can't shoot than the bush.

I can hit 150m with my putter at the driving range. Don't need any other clubs. Might tie a bit of fishing line to it aswell so i don't have to buy a rod

One of my favourite things to do is go camping. I don't mean glamping either.

I prefer to hike into my campsites, meaning that wherever I camp is usually only accessible by foot. Keeps the riff-raff out.

It's a shame that camping has changed so much now. I can't stand to camp in "designated" sites most of the time. Last time I camped in the southern flinders, two families rocked up with their generators and their electronic devices. Absolutely ruined the experience, I can't understand how people take so much crap with them. I always thought it was about returning to nature, not bringing technology with you!

Anyway, as long as I can roll out my swag or pitch my hoochie - I can go basically anywhere. Gotta love this country, hopefully I'll get to see a bit more of it before I hang up my hat!

Being doing some research on rifles and the previously recommend Tikka T3 does look great. So I went and checked out my local gun store and he has them in stock. I think a T3 light stainless was $1299. It seems like a superb quality rifle.
Does anyone know when the new T3x arrives on our shores? Anyone seen them at their local?

Also any opinion on Howa rifles? They had them on special for $699 and they had them in .308 and .223 which would've my preferred calibers. Are they any good?
I could get the Tikka or two of the Howa's.
Could I do everything with the .308? Hunting deer will be my primary concern but I also want to do target shooting and pop rabbits on the farm. Obviously a .308 is overkill for rabbits but does it really matter?
My gut says buy the Tikka now and maybe a .223 next year.
Will the Tikka out shoot the Howa?

Thats what I have a 19 foot bowrider with a 220 sterndrive for. Cant afford to take it out often. It will do 95kph flat stick, and all its used for is fishing in peice. I don't owe any money on it, it makes me smile driving up the driveway and I wont get rid of it because when the odd occasion I'm on it, I love it

Hard to beat the Tikka or Remington in their price range. They regularly outperform rifles that cost three times the price and quality and feel of the rifle is hard to beat.

If the world came to an end and I had to grab one thing to feed and defend myself it would be my Remington 700 SPS 308

Picked up my Remington 700 for $1200 in 308.

For a budget rifle I would go Ruger all the way. I have a 20 year old ruger that is a tack driver, and my favourite and most fun rifle to own IMO

Realistically speaking he 308 is overkill for what you want, .243 will be fine for deer, 223, will do most things you ever want to do, except hunt deer.

I only bought a 308 for deer as I figured a 243 to be too close to a 223 to bother with, but since I am bound by game license regulations I just bought a 308. (I still have a .222 which really is the old .223)

Really depends on what you want to do the most, not all rifles/calibers will do all things, you don't use a putter to drive the ball 200 metres, you don't use a 308 on rabbits and foxes, or a .22 on pigs and deer.

If I was starting from zero I would grab a nice Remington 700 .223 with a decent scope and go out and learn to shoot it well, learn it's capabilities and then use it, you will most likely find it will do most things you want. Then go from there.

are you in sydney / nsw? go to the Shot Expo (but get a PTA first lol)

I would love to get into shooting again. In my much younger days i had a 30/30 lever action Winchester, an 8mm Turkish Mauser and a semi auto .22. I think the recoil from a .22 would throw my back out these days...

Glad you took my advice
Butter smooth actions and sub-moa out of the box. I paid $1,050 for my T3 Lite.
Being made by Sako they're fantastic rifles.

My mate has a Howa .22-250 and while it shoots great he's had multiple problems with rounds getting stuck and not ejecting while my Tikka has been flawless.

The T3x has landed in Australia, depending on where you live your local shop may or may not have them yet.

Also, plenty of T3's on usedguns.com for under $1k if you dont mind buying used.

The problem with me buying used is I really wouldn't know how to spot any flaws. So I think I'll stick to new. But I'll still check out the site.
I've had a look out some Howa reviews. Doesn't look great. I think getting a Howa would only cost me more in the long run as upgrade-itus takes hold.
What's a good scope. I'm thinking something around 3-10x and maybe $500ish.

Yeah i wouldn't buy a used rifle either, not one I need dependable accuracy out of anyway.

Look for a Leupold Vx3, you might get lucky. I think Vortex do a scope in that range too. 50mm objective is soooo much better than 40mm also.

Edit: Check out Meopta also, I've heard good things.

aside from time with my family, I like playing with old stuff

the current money waster is my old farm truck that I'm giving a dulux over haul and putting on the road
