A few years back a 22 year old chap took me on a joy ride through Holborn (London) at lunch time, in a DB9 convertable with the roof down - the noise coming off the buildings was insane... Probably not too far off a DBS given the motors are fairly similar. Still, this thread is about V8's... |

If anyone knows old Mercedes they'd probably agree the sohc M116 and M117 V8s are up there from the 1960s-80s, especially opened up. I had a 3" exhaust on my old 560sec which is one of the best sounding Euro V8s out there.
If you can call it a Euro V8 the alloy V8 in the Land Rover/Range Rover is definately up on the list too. |

C63 is something special, sounds much better than the E or S with the same motor. Although most Benz V8's had some note.
for me the winner is... Porsche 928 (particularly the GTS) made the ground shake.

I’m very bias towards the C63. The down shifts have to be experienced to be believed.

The most popular mod for a C63 is to delete the secondary cats and replace them with an x-pipe, it gives the car a much deeper sound and is almost a must do when being tuned. The second most popular is long tube headers to replace the stock manifolds, again for the extra horsepower when being tuned. |

Modded CLK 63 Black Series from CV performance I rolled up next to a few months ago.
Close second is a Maserati GranTurismo S around the area. |

When just reading the thread title I would have said C63 AMG and put down your glasses.
I'm still of that opinion, however in saying that, the sound of the Maserati Quattroporte posted above really is quite impressive.

Audi RS4, hands down. Love the car, adore the sound. I don't know if they had done anything to it, but one night out in Brisbane I saw one drive past, and had goosebumps from that burble...

In regard to a V8 I would have to say the Merc 6.2 for what a true v8 should sound like.
Also, In regards to the pace cars at Albert Park this year that C63 wagon was brilliant. Sounded like two sledgehammers being hit together |

I once asked a mate of mine who was attending the Melbourne GP some years back to try and get hold of a CD recording of Formula 1 sounds. He did, but I was dissapointed. I was hoping to get discreet recordings of the field entering the Parabolica, or steaming past the Casino, through the tunnel etc. Instead, the recording lacked fidelity, the microphone often saturated by the noise in the workshop, also, lacked depth (stereo). Car entering bend, followed by car exiting bend...etc.
So, with HiFi being one of my passions, I think nothing would be more exciting than a collection of, basically, all of the above thread, plus the usa and aussie and even the japanese muscle, performing in a variety of situations, and not just screaming their ring off, but just giving the wink, the wry smile, that hidden deep below is something special. Any thoughts? Gaz |

If it has no chance of being in my garage or driveway ??
I'm not really interested... Modern V8's are so muffled ...

AMG's, Massers, Fezzas, AM's, even the Jags are incredibly loud for standard cars. BMW's, standard Mercs and the local stuff - agreed you can barely hear 'em in standard form. |

probably about 15 years ago - back when I was in SA, an old hq/hx era monaro went past us at full noise, and I thought was being followed by another one from the sound that was coming but was pretty surprised to see an 80's SL Merc chasing him - I'd never heard one of them sound that good before
