The one thing I don't like on the AU is those stupid wheel arches. It was a last minute insistance from Detroit. AUs would look a lot more streamlined and modern without those XD Falcon things.

VL Walkinshaw SS GRPA, the "Bat Mobile" as it was called. Hated them with a passion with new. Move on a few decades, and totally opposite. Not the best drive now compared with the modern cars but the attitude on the road is unmistakable. For an 80's car awesome!!

R32 GT-R.
Hated them as a teenager because they beat up on the Sierra's in Group A touring cars but as I got older I grew to appreciate how advanced the car was and eventually bought one. |

I had to Google them. The XR2 has potential (If you're cashed up and love twin turbo's easy low 9's)....the Tickford Clubspint - I have just discovered an Antidote for Viagra.

i wonder if all the hatred for the au would be around had the plan played out and the turbo was installed in it,instead of the ba/f with its crappy grained dash and door trims, seats

Enlighten me on exactly what is wrong with the AU wheel arches? You suggesting the AU would look streamlined and modern with all 4 wheels concealed by the bodywork ?

The last of the te50s with the hand built stroker was a great mechanical package. A turbo option couldn't have made up for the rest of it. |

Perhaps he means the AU 1's ride height.. which was a tad high and made car look a tad odd.

I think what he means is the AU has the same style of flared lip around the wheel arches that Ford had put on every Falcon since the XD at that point.

3 cars I've hated new.
AU, VN & the Walkinshaw. I've owned a VN SS, VN V8 Calais, HSV SV5000, VG Maloo ute, HDT Magnum replica ute, 2 x AU XR8's and 2 Walkinshaws And I'd like to buy a VN SS Group A now.

Have a look here. http://www.cars-that-suck.com/stories.html Now some are whingers, and some have made their own bad luck. But, they replace it with a Toyota or Honda and the trouble stops. |

I love the AU styling, always have. Its a design that challenges, it has character, it didn't conform to fashion.
Having said that (and after owning two AU's) I realise its styling isn't to all tastes and I would personally say its an ugly car, but that's why I like it. What I can not understand, considering to most eyes the AU is ugly, how on earth the Ford management approved such a design if they knew it would cause such revolt. You could say they took the gambol on the fact it was so different that people would buy it for that alone. But it wasn't different in a good way, again, it was just plain ugly. Its not a matter of blaming the designer (Steve Park, who also returned for the FG) but the management that allowed to go to production.

I think the blacked out section of the Lowndes' AU Xr headlight closely resembles a BA Xr headlight. Blacking out any AU3 Falcon in a similar fashion almost results in something that looks like a BA.

Hello,
If I remember correctly, the AU style was forced on Ford Aus. for the corporate look of Ovals and Triangles. Taurus was another. The BA sold well, as many people liked the styling. The engine is also good, Au's were a good Car mechanically, and being cheap / ugly are a good buy on the second hand market. The head gasket problems were gone, and you could drive them without cooking the engine. If they lost coolant they ran rich and shut down cylinders. Dont want to try it, but that is what is meant to happen. |
