Jeez, I hope he makes a full recovery. The reports seem to contradict one another unfortunately however. Won't be the same if he doesnt return to the show.
I notice that the anti Top- Gear movement in the UK are again making noises. Hope they dont get very far this time. |

Top Gear's Hammond makes "good progress" Fri Sep 22, 2006 6:00 PM BST LONDON (Reuters) - Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is making "good progress" after being moved out of intensive care on Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said. His friend and co-host James May said doctors at Leeds General Infirmary were "cautiously optimistic". "I've had a conversation with Hammond today -- not a long one, but it was a conversation," May said. "I am not a doctor but I am his mate and I believe that, deep inside, the Hammond I know is perfectly intact." Hammond, 36, was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 300 mph in a feature being filmed for the BBC show. He suffered what his doctors at Leeds General Infirmary have called a significant brain injury as a result of the accident at an RAF airfield near York. Although doctors remain concerned about his condition they have said they are "reasonably optimistic that he will make a good recovery." A spokeswoman at Leeds General Infirmary said Hammond was "continuing to make good progress". No further details about the presenter's condition were being released at the request of Hammond's family. Continued...

I've always clicked with Hampster .. we are the same age, same height and build and I take the same "****" from people about said height! I really hope he pulls out of this. My thoughts go out to his family and friends .. even Jeremy.
Goes to so that despite all the safety equipment (which I ASSUME a 300mph vehicle would have), accidents happen and at those speeds nothing will stop your brain bashing about inside your skull .. :( |

BBC World News have a page where you can leave a message for Richard.
http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thre...20060923034100 I think it's important to show support right now for his recovery and the future of Top Gear. The speed nazis in England (Transport 2000) are already calling (again) for the show to be shut down. Daniel |

Sounds like he is making good progress so far.
The guy is a deadset legend....and at the same time, a complete idiot. Same as James and Jeremy really :P I sincerely hope he makes a full recovery, and look forward to seeing him on TV again soon.

Good to hear he is back on the mend. I hope that he returns to Top Gear after he has recovered fully, it wont be the same without him. Looking at his cheeky, smiling face just made me smile on Monday nights!
I hope his wife and little girls are doing ok too, I am sure they are giving him heaps of support on his road to recovery!

24 September 2006 END CRAZY TELLY STUNTS MAN OF THE PEOPLE Eamonn Holmes OVER the years I've had to remind myself and many friends and colleagues that a TV camera is no insurance against injury. It's amazing what people will do simply because they are being filmed. Steve Irwin was a tragic example. Richard Hammond is sadly another. Maybe what has happened to him will be a wake-up call to the increasingly self-indulgent Top Gear programme to perhaps get back to what they should be doing - simply test driving cars. Didn't take em long...

Heres hoping Richard returns soon to Top Gear. However we wont be missing him on the shows here until in a couple of years time when the series they are currently filming finally gets shown. Why are the shows here so old? |

Anyway, I don't think it's quite 2 years. The Top Gear episode with Mark Webber shown recently on SBS was from Nov 12 2005, so maybe 10-12 months behind.

BBC to postpone Top Gear
September 25, 2006 12:53pm http://www.news.com.au/entertainment...-10388,00.html THE BBC is to postpone the new series of Top Gear until presenter Richard Hammond has recovered from the brain injuries he suffered in a high-speed crash. The next series had been due to begin on October 8. "We would not think of finalising plans for the next series without discussing it with everyone involved," the BBC said in a statement. "When it is suitable, the team will do this and we will announce a new transmission date." Hammond, 36, was moved from a high dependency ward to a side-room on a general ward at Leeds General Infirmary on Saturday. "He is continuing to do well," a hospital spokesman told Reuters on Sunday. Hammond was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 482km/hr in a feature being filmed for the BBC show. With the accident being jointly investigated by police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Top Gear producer Andy Wilman threatened to quit if the BBC made any attempt to tone down the program's emphasis on speed and extreme stunts. "You either do the show you do or you walk away," Wilman told The Observer newspaper on Sunday. Hammond's co-host Jeremy Clarkson also rejected criticism of Top Gear's format. "Next week I intend to be down on the track driving faster than ever," Clarkson told The Observer. "It's what we do." Meanwhile Hammond well-wishers have donated over $339,328 to a charity for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which air-lifted the Top Gear presenter to hospital after Wednesday's crash.
