I didn't say it justifies anything. Not everyone dies who outrun police, just the young & inexperienced one's.

From all the fatal post pursuit accidents I can remember the drivers were usually aged 15 - 25.

These new laws do encourage people to "chance it" and take on police because their car is worth more to them and think they can lose the police.

Down here in VIC, the pursuit "controller" usually a SGT from the associated division takes charge, he is the one who calls the pursuit off, obviously that is relayed onto other units from VKC but I've never heard a "radio room" call off a pursuit, in most cases general duties cars are the first ones who are behind the car whilst they scramble a TMU car to take lead.

Given Victoria Police are switching to digital communications next month (supposedly) the door for irregularities will open, can't say it's a good thing for no-one knowing what police are doing, not even the media.

Harsher punishment?? You've got me on that one, I dunno.
You get 3 strikes with these new hoon laws don't you?? or does it depend on the offence?? I'm not sure. If they take your car on the first offence, then yes thats harsh. But if your losing your car after repeated offences, then you can't complain that the laws are tough.

3 strikes before the car is permanently confiscated, 1st one is 48 hours which is major inconvinience and a huge cost.

Yea it will mostly be fools who get their car permanently confiscated but its situations like

THIS

where officers abuse their power where drivers will start tempting the idea of running.

They dummied up the charges just so they could meet their quota of "hoons" captured for the night and now the poor kid has to go to court, pay towing and impoundment charges and go without a car for 2 days.

Once stories like this start getting out then watch the number of people running jump.

Well, you are partially right. It's not only the pursuit controller that can ( and does ) call of pursuits. It can be pretty well anyone involved in the pursuit these days. The passenger of the pursuing vehicle can call it off, the 265 or 150 can, as can a 251 ( 252 etc etc ). Any of the online supervisors (sergeants in the 'radio room') can call it off. Yes, I have beenin the 'radio room; when one has called it off.
Every time these things go wrong, the monday morning quarterbacks and other associated hangers on and people with agendas, not to mention the real issue, the coroner, have all the time in the world, usually years, to review a few minutes of chaos and split second decisions.
Pursuits should be tightly regulated but the feeding frenzy that goes on afterwards is really sickening.

Cheers for clearing that up, I'd guess the online sgt calling it off would not happen very often?

I agree the media can twist a story their way and make villains look like heroes and police look like they are in the wrong, however each case has it's own merits.

It's always a good thing when a police pursuit ends with "1 or 2" etc in custody.

As the onlines are not there or able to really guage the situation they don't make a habit of it but if there is no pursuit controller that comes up or they feel it is their interests they will call it off. When the hit hits the fan, there is a system there to make sure the splatter is felt far and wide.
There have been cases where pursuits have been called off and the pursuing vehicle has just turned the sirens off. A lot of people get this confused with the pursuing vehicle backing right off and leaving the lights on for safety.
Obviously a No Pursuit Policy will end up with every drop kick and their dog making a runner. Pursuits are a necessary evil and have their place but they have to be carefully managed. Making the penalty for running far in excess of any other road related penatly would help by making pulling over in their interest, at least IMO.

I see cars in the same light as guns. They kill, they injure, and they are used as a recreational tool. If an unlicenced idiot has a gun, he will have it taken from him by police. Why not a car?

I agree with the laws. I have a very hot car too, but I choose not to drive like a tool, therefore I am not scared of losing my car to these laws.

Ditto.

If you have spent so much money, blood, sweat and tears, why risk it? Save the testosterone for the track and prove your car against other real cars.

If that's not a reason for confiscation, what is ??
Edit, just watched the shot.. there isn't much to show for it except some footage of the stopped car, looks like it hit a gutter. I really hope they keep his car as he had passengers. Screw him.
