Owning a classic car: Is it worth it?

My 2 girls (11 and 14) and I got a lift to BBQ in mate's VL Exec the other day...both kids thought the manual window winders were awesome.

Mate and I lol'ed when the 11yo goes "and if you wind it the other way the window goes up" like it was some kind of magic.

It's the reverse of 8yo me being fascinated by the electric windows in uncle's HZ Statesman SLE in 1979.

Not really on topic of classics being too much hassle to own - just thought I'd share here where cars of yesteryear are being appreciated.

I love the older classics, did my time on a lot of them, currently have two ZB - C Fairlanes in line for rebuild, after one '77 F100, Two Harley's and one AU V8 Falcon ute. I got informed today at my local parts supplier I am about the only one left up here rebuilding carbies. Geez they aren't hard just getting parts. People who own and maintain the older cars, machinery whatever tickles you always get a smile, picture taken and the pleasure of owning SOMETHING different from the rest. OR is it just me!

Personally I think owning a classic car is worth it for the sheer enjoyment you get driving them and even just looking at them. If you have somewhere undercover to store them, and you don't need to drive them everyday, they make a great hobby for car enthusiasts.

People have different hobbys and interests, some collect old jukeboxes, vinyl records, antique furniture etc. Others are in to boats, jetskis, or diving etc, for the same reasons......it gives them some enjoyment.

Not everybody thinks about profit, many classic car owners plan to keep their cars forever and pass them down to family members. Mind you, some owners will eventually sell their cars because family members are not interested in classic cars.

I think it's great that there's many dedicated owners of classic cars, who are keeping them in good condition for future generations to see. It would be a real shame if these beautiful old classic cars just disappeared forever.

I have treated all my cars over the years as "classic" cars or vans or utes, but they all had one thing in common?....they were driven, and hard too, back in 70's Sydney there were a multitude of now classic cars just cruising the streets, being used for what they were designed for!

And a multitude of dudes hanging around discussing what they did to what they drove, how and what cam or wheels to buy next, it was a cool scene and its vanished into antiquity now, what we have now is disgraceful really, using cars, working mans cars as a commercial commodity, its worse that the bloody stock market now.

Is it worth it ? I reckon owning any classic that you love everything else doesn't matter.
Wish I had one of the models I grew up with idolising.
An XB coupe or XA GT, (not the kind of coin I wish to pay today sadly) whatever the incurring annual costs were I wouldn't give a toss.

My 2 are not "classics" but the T3/Sprint 8 are my selfish hobby/pleasure loving our Falcons.

They are basically classics now in a way, at the end of the day if you have to explain it then the receiver most likely wont understand anyway.

It’s absolutely worth it, as for being pestered to sell no that’s bull ****, you get the odd ****er asking how much it’s worth, these guys usually have know idea and just like to look at a shiny old car, you have a chat about it and move on.

If your sitting on one waiting for it to appreciate in value, good for you but for me that’s not what it’s about and I think your never going to get the “real” return on the investment only a monetary return

Just bought an AU series 2 LTD V8. Thought it was a good compromise between buying a true classic and something more affordable. Just a lovely old girl!
