Wink DP chip - Ford Focus TDCI

Hey Big Damo,regarding the DP Chip and K&N Air Filter....My place of work is right next door to some local Diesel Specialists, they recommended the DP Chip as compared to most of the Euro ones,I can't remember the specific reasons why....however that's what I went with.Actually, I'd just returned from a 2 week trip to Tokyo( which I loved!)...I was on a bit of a high...and enjoying far too many red wines whilst surfing the 'net...so , I bit the bullet and purchased the DP31 Chip Online ! not cheap...$ 1495.00 to be exact.I was a little ****ed at myself for doing so, however, once she was fitted....about 10 mins work..I was rapt ! It is 10 position adjustments,,comes standard set at position 5...I am running mine at 6 , and am happy with that,Supposed to give 118 kw and extra 50 nm of torque. ( It certainly feels like it !)
As regards the K & N Filter...purchased from the UK ( On Ebay)...about $ 130.00 from memory. Contrary to a comment I saw made by another member, I have no doubt that the K&N made a very noticeable difference ( in the seat of the pants ) On my last service, I changed back to the original filter ( just in case Ford spat the dummy) ...When I remembered to re-insert the K&N 2 weeks later, I instantly felt the increase in power and smoothness.Hope my comments might be of some help to you mate.
By the way, I have sent you ( per email) a link to assist you with running in your "rattler"....I have run-in my vehicle using the guidelines, and couldn't be happier !!!!!!!!

Thanks much, I'm also looking at changing the air intake/filter and intercooler, I was looking at the Code:RED intercooler and air intake but they haven't replied to my emails, with the air intake I'm thinking of changing the plastic tube and air filter, with an alloy pipe made up by a friend with the filter ending down somewhere near the grille opening for a cold air intake setup.

EDIT: Just read that email, very good link there, hard to avoid the long constant revs part though as I drive 100km of 100km/h freeway a day, might take her up the mountain and work it out a bit more

I've been shifting before 2000 RPM to the next gear, might have to work it out a bit more, keep it on boost

Sounds like a plan , Damo....Just remember not to void your warranty requirements mate! BTW, I forget to mention....The DP Chip people offer a 5 Year Drivetrain Warranty when you use their chip....Have a look at their website anyway....it's pretty interesting!!!

With warranty, I don't plan on getting the car serviced at Ford, so if something goes wrong warranty wise I'm going to keep the stock parts and put them back in if the car needs to go back to Ford for any reason.

Yeah, Interesting point about Ford Service...I have had 3 services at Ford
Complimentary, 15,000 KS AND 30,0000 K'S.How about this...On each occasion, I have been charged for a different type Oil Filter....each time, a different part number...and, a different price. That really ****ed me off...but, they claimed that simple keying mistakes where the problem....so, there was no problem !
Actually, on the last ( 30.000ks) service, I was charged for Shell Rimula X 15w-40 oil as the fill....again, I was advised that it was a " keying" error and I was actually filled with Shell Helix 5w-30 . Certainly was not confidence inspiring stuff
You would like to think that Ford Service( paying the" extra" for that specialist training and expertise was the way to go !) Sadly....NO!!!

Yep, also already having an issue, its done this to me twice so far.

Sometimes, seems to happen randomly, when I go to start the car, I let it sit with ignition on until snowflake goes orange, red then disapears, when I go to start it after the snowflake goes away, it just wont start, sometimes it will crank over a few times and fire right up, other times, keeps cranking and wont start, second go it works.

Its giving me the shits, done this to me twice, once at work carpark and now in my driveway. I'm going to ring up my salesman tomorrow and organise it to go in to *shudder* Ford service department.

Other than that, all good.

Also curious if i can use shell helix ultra extra 5W-30 in this as well or does it have to be especially a diesel oil? Its a group 4 synthetic that I use in my Fiesta.

Damo, No.Doesn't have to be a specific Diesel Oil...In
the TDCI, same oil as the petrol version I believe...Personally, In have gone for the Castrol 0-40w Fully Synthetic , which seems to comply with everything!! There are probably much better oils out there...however ..they need to be researched very carefully....I believe that the Castrol 0-40w Synthetic meets this criteria!!!!

I use mobile 1 full synth 5-30 dosnt smoke any more. I have been told that the ford oil is crap and most of the time they dont put in the proper oil!!! Together with the tunit chip and K&N filter runs great!!!

You need to make sure that the correct oil is used, I've seen situations in them before where incorrect oil and lack of servicing has led to particulate filter failure.

So do the TDCi's have a particle filter (LV Mk1)? I read the new Peugeot RCV needs its particle filter replaced at 160,000kms. If our engine is a peugeot engine like stated further up in this thread, are we in the same boat?

The early 2007 models do not have a particulate filter, I think they started incorporating them in the 2008 models and onward.

Yes, most definitely use Diesel grade oil. Some Unleaded fuel oils are coming up to the level that they are equal with Diesel but quite there yet. Read the container and it will say if it is suitable for Diesel engines.

The Focus needs a low ash type oil if your car has a particulate filter, if you use any other oil, you risk the filter clogging up which can reduce the life of the filter which can be expensive to replace. If you don't have a particulate filter, then normal diesel oil is fine.

Anyone doing their own servicing should make sure they use the correct filter (Not necessarily Ford branded), make sure the filter cap is torqued down to the correct tension and change the filter every service. If you are going to change the fuel filter, make sure you have the correct tools to bleed the system before attempting the change. In the major service, there is a requirement to replace some fluid that is for the particulate filter, this apparently (So the book say's) is only done by Ford - go figure!!

Any truck driver will tell you, the secret to longevity in a diesel engine is changing filters frequently, personally I change the oil and filter every 7,000km, about 1/2 the normal service cycle.

Yeah, Thats correct...mine is a 2007 Model, so no DPF is fitted...Came with the 2008 Model, and yes....A study of the Oil Manufacturer sites with clarify the oil required if you have a Particulate Filter fitted . For a period, I used Penrite Diesel 5, which is a 5w-40 Oil safe for the TDCI Common Rail Injected engines...I was very confident in using this particular Oil.....however....Not suit able for DPF models.....All the best !! Getting ready to ride out the Cyclone hitting Cairns area tonight.......Wish me luck!

Peugeot recommend the same oil in both their petrol and diesel engines: Total Quartz Ineo ECS 5W30 - http://www.peugeot.com.au/media/deli...305-df583b.pdf

They make the diesel engine in the Focus so maybe that would be the best oil to use.
The engine is the DW10BTED4 and depending on your Focus' year model it may or may not have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or FAP.

Goodonya Big Damo....back on line at last...lost power at home for almost 4 days
Not too bad considering what some poor buggers are trying to contend with!
The cyclone hit hardest about 150 ks south of Cairns ( where I live)...I just had a big tree clean-up to contend with...bugger all really.Anyway Damo...not sure where the DPF is fitted in the TDCI...so I am no help mate !

The Particluate filter is usually in the engine pipe (the exhaust bit from the engine to the cat converter) with a sensor either side of it to measure pressure. When it starts restricting exhaust flow its time for the engine to burn it clean.
My 07 build TDCI came without the little bugger for which I am glad.

Well boys I've been enquiring about some chips... I get absolutely no response from Spider, be it the UK site or Australia, DPChip didn't respond to my email either.

The only response I've had is from Tunit which is apparantly a similar unit to DPChip. They quoted me $1280 plus $15 postage.

They also gave me a list of suppliers in my area so I just called one of them and asked me to get a quote as well.

So Chicka you can really feel the difference huh? I remember reading someone else's post saying it wasn't worth it but you sound happy with your purchase.

Yeah, for sure..as I previously said, I have no figures to back it up, but the" seat of the pants" feeling in great as far as I am concerned! I am surprised that the DP people haven't responded! I Found their service excellent ! I know its a lotta cash , but I'm certainly happy with the purchase ! Even the induction sound from inside the car is great
Sounds and runs like a very flexible petrol driven vehicle...and smooth too !!!

I've seen your other post, Damo. Glad you're ok. And glad I got my Mrs into a five-star safety LX Fiesta. Worth the extra money over the 4 star CL for a situation like that.

Hi again Big Damo....With regard to the fitting of a DP Chip,I believe that fitment from day 1 is not a problem.Actually, The owner of the Diesel Specialists place near me fitted a Steinbauer Chip on his vehicle at about 1000kms. It was a brand new Jeep Cherokee . The Steinbauer chip is ,I think, about $ 2500.00 ...but it is connected to each individual injector, and is apparently more sophisticated than most other available tuning chips.These Diesel boys next door seem to reckon that " drive it like you stole it" is the way to go with the modern common rail diesels..( Within reason , of course).Let's hope the're right !!!!
