I didn't see that one. Anyway, AC/DC from what I can tell, is a good bloke who just so happened to bring up a contentious point and copped his flaming on the chin. Jeff (Ultimate) is also a good bloke who doesn't normally say things like that. I think it's Friday afternoon and everyone's a little frazzled. Now... back to the fog lights!

Default driving lights

After reading all the post I feel it is strange that the NSW Police advise all drivers to turn their headlights on over holiday periods, easter coming up for example, I drive with my head lights on all the time, period, and if I am on on a trip and a on comming car has their lights on I can spot them for ks, but you wont see a car without them on untill they get a lot closer................safety first!

Its been said before a car with there lights on during the day stands out a hell of a lot more, take a look next time your on the road. I use mine all the time.

the lights you are reffering to are called DRIVING LIGHTS, dont know how many of you have tryed to drive in FOG with white beams but it just reflects back at you, FOG lights are YELLOW in colour if your going to winge know what your winging about.

secondly they are 25W in brightness, WTF are you complaining about, it aids in visability so their is more of an importance to have them on than off, i really want my 20seconds back after reading this thread...

There is a law against using the lights in clear conditions. Its attracts a fine. So you can drive with them on if you want, but if Mr Policeman see's you (Depends on the state your in), you could be up for a nasty fine.

It doesn't matter on your interpretation on whether your seen easier in clear conditions, it's what the law makers say it is. Clear conditions, it is against the law to use them.

I had mine on the otherday as we have our first fog for winter.

Pfft! What's sheets me is morons who constantly complain about morons driving with fog/driving lights on. My T1 TS50 has the fog lights, sorry.. ****er lights, on the bottom of the front bar, and they're on everytime the car is started and driven.

Yay.. I'm a ****er with my **** lights on.

I agree, now read and learn:-

Front fog lights are both white and 'selective' yellow. It is the beam characteristic that creates 'the light' type-function, not the colour. That said, 'yellow' is perceived by some to be softer to the approaching eye, but that does not make up the the low loss of actual lumination caused by having yellow. I myself am happy with white in my periodic 10 metre fogs, as I am yellow.

Your ignorance. They are NOT 25 watts. Front fog lights are compliance accepted at 12 volt 55watts. They utilize a variety of bulb types to achive this, no longer are H3's number one, very sad, its been in all the papers:-)

Turn off your FOG lights, go wire up a set of daytime running lamps OR wire up your low-beam headlights to operate on half brightness, also accepted as DRL, very easy to do.

I'd have to agree that the commodore fog lights tend to be the more bright and distracting, they are clearly aimed higher than the fords are.

Two things really, really, really p1ss me off about lights though.

One is the people who drive with their park lights and fog lights,
and two is the people who have misaligned headlights that shine right at you.
Years ago getting a pink slip involved getting the height of your lights checked, this was to avoid glare and shining a badly aligned light into the oncoming motorists eyes. These days they are never checked, and as such I believe their is a little misdirected frustration at the assumption that badly aligned lights must also incorporate fog lights.

Before we ban driving lights/fog lights, I believe we must tackle the issue of misaligned lights, especially at the panel beater stage where these lights are installed yet never aligned.
We should also look at enforcing the law of driving with the high beams on, as there seems to be an ever increasing amount of people doing that.

Agree with everthing past this point LTD, but do wish to enquire why you feel that driving with just the front fog and parkers on is an issue. (In presumed bad weather).

Related issues of photometrics and wattage apply. Low-beam is regulated at 60watts, front fogs 55 at watts. The only 'issue' in say fog could be over crests, but this is a momentary thing. (Compliant high-beam is 55 watts).

We teach through the world - to switch off low beam and to use the front fog lights with just the sidelights (parkers) particularly in seriously reduced visibility conditions, to reduce reflected glare further AND to allow the front indicators to be seen more clearly - where low-beam can effectively mask them.

That method was WA requirement.

I drive with my foggies on at night. I dont drive with any lights during the day unless it is particularly dark/overcast, rainy or foggy (ie reduced daytime visabillity). I like the look of them on XRs etc at night. I dont get blinded by others using them. I have used them all the time since I bought the car 3 years ago, and have only blown one globe in one fog light in that entire time.

If I seriously thought it would annoy people, I wouldnt use them, but I think they are beamed low enough not to matter. They just look good

I went to NE Victoria for a touring holiday in the winter and there was heaps of fog, The next year I went back again, but before I left NSW I put three layers of cellophane over my headlights, orange in color and had my headlights on all the time from Sydney NSW and all over the NE of Vic and I was supprised at the amount of calls I got over the cb asking how did I get my headlights orange mostly from truckies, the color orange, orange half way between fogs and orange and I past pleanty of HP patrols and general Police in both states and was never pulled over once.

I read somewhere recently that the Canadian road toll was reduced by approx 20% after it was made compulsory for headlights to be turned on at all times.

Any another thing - what is it with some motor bike riders that DON'T ride with their headlights on during the day. It should be complusory for bikes to have headlights on at all times as they can be hard to see sometimes, especially when the riders are dressed in black gear.

I don't know what the "f" people think driving with no lights on the way they do.

My rule is if I can see the lights on my dash, it's dark enough to have my headlights on. Once the greenish glow fades away, then I turn them off.

They must figure.. "I can see teh road, I don't need them." The point is NOT whether or not you can see, but whether or not OTHER CARS can see YOU!

Driving lots of two lane roads, I have quite a few times either gone to overtake someone, (or someone overtake me), unable to se an oncomming car, because the idiot is driving with no lights during the twilight time.

The same goes for use or indicators. I think the majority of people (no one here of course) only use them as a means to not get booked. Flicking the stalk as they turn the wheel, instead of it's intended purpose LETTING OTHER DRIVERS KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS! Stupidity on both counts.

On topic now...

Use of "driving lights" (which I consider most auxilary, factory lights to be, "fog lights" re an entirely different breed altogether), does not bother me in the least, it is a good look and if it helps you see, and doesn't interfere with oncomming traffic (which 99% of factory fitted lights do not), more power to you.

The only instance it does annoy me (which I have seen a great many times), is when they use parking lights and fog lights together, when their headlights should clearly be on as well (meaning after dark).

I hate that with a passion.

Mate, I cannot count the number of times I've seen motorbike riders dressed in dark clothing riding around, weaving between traffic at dawn/dusk without headlights on. Its absolutely suicidal what they do. And then they blame others for not looking out for them when changing lanes when the fact is that they dont help themselves be seen.

At least if youve got fog lights on it shows you are aware of the conditions and the need to use them, how about ИИИИing down with rain, just about zero visibitity have a look next time at the amount of people (morons) with no lights on during these conditions its scary especially when a dark coloured car appears out of no where!!

No, not in bad weather, I mean on Sydney roads in clear weather. These people doing it usually have re-aimed their lights to get a better beam from them; usually on ricers - cars like the WRX with the large driving lights. In bad weather I don't mind what anyone does so long as it it doesn't create a problem for others (ie driving with the high beams on).
