An example of how Holden is "buying" Commodore sales , last November, a large natianal fleet company that was buying Falcons was approached by Holden and offered a $ amount per car at the end of the financial year of they switch to Holden.

So if they bought 100 cars for the year they would get that $ x 100.

This is not made up, but an actual fact that has had an effect on PWS.

That is very stupid if Holden is actually doing that, as it's going to reduce their retail margin per sales in the pursuit of sales. Maybe they wil incur massive varible costs if the production falls below X amount with micro-economics.

Sales are obviously important, but the return from those sales is just as equally as important. God knows how Mitsubishi is going, however they suddenly sound rather optimistic at their revised targets for the year, I take it they were able to manipulate their plant and costs to such extent that even with the new discounted prices, they are returing acceptable margins.

Let's hope all these 'small' car buyers trying to save a bit on petrol don't get in any accidents. I'd rather have a larger petrol bill than risk my family's safety (which includes 2 young toddlers). There are many more subjective reasons why I like bigger cars, but the reality of safety is my priority.

I always say to anyone who cares to listen..."how much are your children's live's worth? Certainly more than $200 a month is gas savings..!". No amount of airbags (not that your avg Corolla has more than a Falcon anyway, I think) can compensate for those extra few inches between you and the sheet metal you get in large cars / 4Wds.

A disastrous month for the locally manufactured models. Falcon recorded its worst month since the last recession in the early 1990s. Conversely the imported models are gaining sales with each passing month.

As to the dark side.........

Holden - Australian manufactured vehicles

Commodore - 3,796 (5,773) -34.2%
Ute/Crewman - 1,058 (1,319) -19.8%
Adventra - 180 (56) +221.4%
Statesman/Caprice - 167 (284) -41.2%
Monaro - 98 (198) -50.5%

Total - 5,299 (7,630) -30.6%

Holden - fully imported vehicles

Rodeo - 1,526 (2,278) -40.0%
Astra - 1,377 (2,939) -53.1%
Barina - 1,070 (736) +45.4%
Viva - 897 (0) N/A
Vectra - 92 (258) -64.3%
Combo - 77 (111) -30.6%
Cruze - 40 (199) -79.9%
Tigra - 39 (0) N/A
Zafira - 0 (62) -100.0%
Jackaroo - 0 (5) N/A

Total - 5,118 (6,588) -22.3%

Local + imported = 10,417 (14,218) -26.7%


Holden also experienced a disastrous month for the locally manufactured models however the drop wasn't as big as Ford's drop. It is interesting to note that Holden's fully imported cars also performed poorly except for the Daewoo models.

62% of Ford vehicles sold in Apr 06 are Australian made.
51% of Holden vehicles sold in Apr 06 are Australian made.


For April 2006 the fuel types were as follows:

Petrol - 55,884 (84.3%)
Diesel - 9,445 (14.2%)
LPG - 827 (1.2%)
Hybrid - 173 (0.3%)

Total - 66,329 (2,321 heavy commercial vehicles not included)

For April 2005 the fuel types were as follows:

Petrol - 64,487 (87.0%)
Diesel - 8,802 (11.9%)
LPG - 697 (0.9%)
Hybrid - 130 (0.2%)

Total - 74,116 (2,371 heavy commercial vehicles not included)

The move away from petrol engines is continuing. LPG and hybrid vehicles had big increases but their market share is small. Diesel engined vehicles are making the biggest impact.

My estimation wasn't that far off. As Ford is the only manufacturer who sells dedicated LPG vehicles, it is safe to assume that the 827 vehicles were all Falcons. 827 out of 2,563 means that one out of three Falcons sold last month had the eGas engine.

Is the LPG definition however dedicated LPG engines (which means its only the egas falcon) or factory fitted LPG - which could include Toyota

Thats business. Keeps the production line rolling and softens Fords abillity to compete as it's profit gets harder to get and dealers start complaining that they can't make a dollar with the Falcon, which is ideal when you want to clobber Ford again in a few months with a new Commodore. BFII better be good or Falcon sales won't ever recover. Then theres Fords BA quality issues that still hang over BF in the publics minds and umm "customer service issues" that have been repeated enough times on these forums.

Yes. These are the figures for all brand new Ford and Holden vehicles sold during the month of April 2006 throughout the whole of Australia.

I beg to differ. It may be business but it certainly isn't smart business. GM and Ford have been doing a similar thing in the US, hence their current state.
I'm happy for Holden to "buy" business. Falcon sales aren't down for anything but fuel prices. And unfortunately most don't know that the BF is the most fuel efficient Falcon, probably ever. How does 10.6l/100km average over 27000km sound for a BF XR6 6speed auto?

Quality issues are very well discussed here as very few people start a thread praising their car, as the car meets expectation. We all love conflict as it's human nature so it's much easier to post about negatives than positives.

Car companies are business' no different to any other industry. Their primary goal is to make money, not sell cars. If they slash prices just to keep thier factories busy then they will cause their own demise.

Only nine months to go on my BA and I can't wait to get my BFII (or whatever the next model will be called). I look forward to the improved fuel economy of the new model.
