I’ve just gone from a 2020 Macan GTS to a M240i xdrive in December.

Macan GTS - looked and sounded incredible, not slow but power delivery was underwhelming and the steering wheel was awful to hold for more than 30 mins.

M240i xdrive - huge torque down low, not ugly like the M2, similar performance (12.1 (1/4mile), unassuming.

Anything in the Genesis range maybe? G70? Too bad the Shooting Brake only comes in the 2.0L but the 3.3L is still in the sedan.

My daily Carsales trawl, looking at Jaguar F-Types.

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/jaguar/f-type/

Geez, people have no imagination! Why?! Why do people who are in the position to buy an expensive brand-new car like this choose white? Or black? Of the 72 used examples currently for sale, 31 are white and 14 are black, more than half!

I don't get it, white is a fleet or rental colour, especially flat white. I just see it as such a waste to buy an exuberant car like this, then decide to go conservative and select such a boring colour. Same applies to any other brands too.

The silver, along with the dark grey / blue / green shades are still fairly conservative, though. The orange and red are a bit bolder.

My question is why do people buy an F-type, and then hardly drive it? I get that they are mostly used as weekend only cars, but one of them is a 2013 model with 14,900km on it! The highest has around 100,000.

* The one with the Stormtroopers gave me a laugh in a WTF kind of way.

It's so weird isn't it! Everything today is about individual choice and we end up with black, grey, and white being chosen. Stuff that, metallic blues, reds, greens, purples from light to dark hue.

You can have any colour you want as long as you are prepared to wait for it. This drove my choice to abandon a new car after 12 months and still no delivery date - I refused to compromise on the boring colours that were available. So I suspect people take what can be delivered. Suites manufactures - offer the colours but actually produce limited colour range in volume - less manufacturing variation must be good for them.

Dealers tend to be very conservative in colour choice. Any car ordered for demos or stock are white, grey, silver or black.
They are scared they will get stuck with a colour they can’t sell. It does happen. Looking at you Toxic.

which (off topic I know) boils down to consumer demands are for SUVs. Are they really customer choice or is it manufacturers pushing their barrow?

Polyal, I've lived through it since the 70's and I luv my Falcs warts and all and other brands.
Never thought I'd own a Hilux 4x4 but I finally/still have it actually got one years ago.
Couldn't believe the fun off road at beachs for holidays.
Practical as well but dear oh dear they suck as we know for performance handling.
I could buy a Raptor easy but no interest its still a commercial and not worth those $$$$ to me.
Never thought I'd be in a SUV but guess what, I tested out X3M, AMG, SQ3 I couldn't believe how damn good the performance ones are, sedans with height.
When I tested the Macan GTS it just went next level on those mentioned in performance handling, right size suits my needs and practical enough.
Now I get why those sports guys won't go back once having 911's.
For a heavy 2ton SUV these things blow you off how damn good it launchs and handles. AWD V6TT - 6pot fronts 21" rims - they are less about tech compared to the bells and whistles of BM/MB interior wise etc all about the driver !
Hence why I linked some Q's for they are a cousin and a good bit of kit.
IF you haven't steered one you don't know.
I understand they are capable, and when we speak about cars these days we are hyper critical given all the information and access we have.

Dont get me wrong, id daily one too, but if your coming from a mustang and want a similar style/look/feel then yeah I am not sure if the OP is quite into the SUV stage yet.

In saying that the OP was pretty vague at the start and it is very open ended question. People cross shop for sure but there must be some limits to what he would accept.

While I agree the decline in affordable performance is saddening, I must say Hyundai is doing a ripper job with the N line..cant believe I am saying that.

But again thats a different price point.

I already have the worlds best SUV. A Barra powered SZII Territory.
So I’m not interested in any pumped up SUV, as good as they may be.
I do have my eye on something but until my Mustang sells I can’t make a move.

RS3 maybe? M2 would be my pick if I fitted in the damn thing.
There is no model 3 performance on sale at the moment and Plaid variation is still unconfirmed .

I have 21 M3P and rumour was that Plaid model 3 would be a tri-motor . That seems to have dropped off the radar and new M3P might be higher output but still dual motor . If your predictions are right , i might trade mine in .

The new updated 3 is pretty good looking. Saw it in the flesh a few weeks ago and it's pretty neat. Fit and finish is a huge leap forward!

Roadster is low priority. Not much margin in it and they have bigger fish to fry. Never trust Elon time especially with radical products. Y and X were evolutions of the 3 and X respectively so the timeline was almost in line with the expectations. Same applies with the Cybertruck though it has finally seen the light of day.

So this happened. For full transparency this is my wife’s new daily, as was the Mustang it replaced.
Ultimately we couldn’t find another car the offered the looks, power and sound anything like the Mustang under $200,000. So another Mustang has been ordered but is some time away.
In the mean time the Raptor is a fun alternative with a fair bit of character. If you haven’t driven a next gen Raptor I’d recommend a test drive. It’s hard not to giggle at how fast it is and how fast you can just drive over anything.
So to answer my own question “what can replace a Mustang?”
The answer is another Mustang.

If it was my choice alone I would choose the Code Orange paint to match the interior highlights and because it’s the hero colour.

Congrats on the car!

Meanwhile I'm still on a waitlist. I love them and have ordered it in blue. Just hate the engine note that sounds like an Ecotec. Only thing that takes away from that car.

About 6 months so far. Was told to expect another 6-9 months if waiting.

I'll just drive it in quiet mode.
