China had a near total lockdown. The army enforced people being locked into their apartment buildings. Yes, the virus rapidly runs its course if you totally restrict peoples movements. Who, apart from Italy has done anything close to this?

I wonder how many empty facilities could be quickly converted into treatment centres?

Vacant hotels, schools, halls, receptions, retirement villages, nursing homes, hospitals, medical centres, office buildings etc.

Got to hand it to the Chinese - when they say they will do something fast they do.

If predictions are that we will run out of beds then there should already be works underway to get emergency facilities online ASAP.

I heard they were even asking retired nurses and other medical practitioners to be on standby for a possible request to help.

Only issue will be the supply of actual hardware needed (beds etc) and people power.

Is this close enough?

Denmark shuts all schools and universities amid surge in coronavirus cases
The Danish Government has announced the closure of all schools and universities and is sending home all non-critical government workers.

The government in Denmark has announced all schools and universities will be closed and non-critical public sector workers will be sent home in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement was made after the number of cases in the country surged on Wednesday to more than 500.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said all schools, preschools and universities in the country would be closed in the country as of Monday.

She further announced public sector employees would be sent home unless their job was deemed critical. The drastic step is being taken by the government in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus, which has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation.

On the same day of the government’s announcement, 514 people were diagnosed with the coronavirus in Denmark, which equates to a tenfold spike in the country’s number of infected patients.

The government have also advised that all events with more than 100 people should be cancelled. The previous advice was for events with 1000 people or more to be cancelled.

I have my suppliers in China emailing me from Wednesday just gone saying they're open for business and ready to ship goods.

Anyone want N95 masks? They'll ship them by the 1000's.

ASX had a fun day yesterday. Down nearly 8% from open at the lowest and closed up by near 4.5%

Agree it only means anything if you're close to retirement which I'm far far off but you should have already been in conservative investments before this happened if you are that close especially given the experience in the GFC.

I'm down $10k this week and not that much ahead of last year now with 3 months to go. But it will bounce back.

I've been looking into investment options outside of super. I been thinking about my own shares account where I can control what companies I'm in. I know a few people taking the opportunity to pick up blue chips.

From what i've read on a couple of medical forums, it seems the 2 scenarios are:

1. mild flu, sore throat, head congestion, much like normal flu and recover in
7-10 days.

2. Bad flu, head congestion, head aches, sore muscles, much phlem and fluid in the lungs, intense whooping type repetitive cough. requires hospitalization.

Theres nothing to suggest those who have had covid-19 and recovered have caught it again, i think its the fact the virus stays in the host well after recovery period(still infectious).

Default Re: Coronavirus scare causing markets to fall

I am writing to you from Bergamo, Italy, at the heart of the coronavirus crisis. The news media in the US has not captured the severity of what is happening here. I am writing this post because each of you, today, not the government, not the school district, not the mayor, each individual citizen has the chance, today to take actions that will deter the Italian situation from becoming your own country’s reality. The only way to stop this virus is to limit contagion. And the only way to limit contagion is for millions of people to change their behavior today.

If you are in Europe or the US you are weeks away from where we are today in Italy.

I can hear you now. “It’s just a flu. It only affects old people with preconditions”

There are 2 reasons why Coronavirus has brought Italy to it’s knees. First it is a flu is devastating when people get really sick they need weeks of ICU – and, second, because of how fast and effectively it spreads. There is 2 week incubation period and many who have it never show symptoms.

When Prime Minister Conte announced last night that the entire country, 60 million people, would go on lock down, the line that struck me most was “there is no more time.” Because to be clear, this national lock down, is a hail mary. What he means is that if the numbers of contagion do not start to go down, the system, Italy, will collapse.

Why? Today the ICUs in Lombardy are at capacity – more than capacity. They have begun to put ICU units in the hallways. If the numbers do not go down, the growth rate of contagion tells us that there will be thousands of people who in a matter of a week? two weeks? who will need care. What will happen when there are 100, or a 1000 people who need the hospital and only a few ICU places left?

On Monday a doctor wrote in the paper that they have begun to have to decide who lives and who dies when the patients show up in the emergency room, like what is done in war. This will only get worse.

There are a finite number of drs, nurses, medical staff and they are getting the virus. They have also been working non-stop, non-stop for days and days. What happens when the drs, nurses and medical staff are simply not able to care for the patients, when they are not there?

And finally for those who say that this is just something that happens to old people, starting yesterday the hospitals are reporting that younger and younger patients – 40, 45, 18, are coming in for treatment.

You have a chance to make a difference and stop the spread in your country. Push for the entire office to work at home today, cancel birthday parties, and other gatherings, stay home as much as you can. If you have a fever, any fever, stay home. Push for school closures, now. Anything you can do to stop the spread, because it is spreading in your communities – there is a two week incubation period – and if you do these things now you can buy your medical system time.

And for those who say it is not possible to close the schools, and do all these other things, locking down Italy was beyond anyone’s imagination a week ago.

Soon you will not have a choice, so do what you can now.

Please share.

I've had whooping cough before when I was in college and it the most sick I have ever been.

Coughed so hard I was vomiting and actually burst a blood vessel in the nose which I occasionally still have issues with.

Was off school and work for at least a month then couldn't work for another 2 weeks because of the nose bleeds.

Correct. But here in Australia, we are being too ignorant, selfish and behaving like idiots. Specially the inhabitants of the human zoo in Canberra.

You hear and read a lot of idiots saying 'Australia only has a small number of infected, why is everyone so worried?' or 'I'm not worried about this flu, I will be ok', or 'All these selfish people buying up everything', etc. etc.

Truth be told, most of us, are being stupid, or selfish, or both.

Yes, we currently have a small number of infected. And deaths. Great! Let's all do our best to keep it that way! Idiots with the mentality that because the numbers are small, or they're not worried about the virus, need to pull their selfish heads out of their ar$es. You're selfish behaviour is what will increase that 'small' number, and make this sh!t a bigger problem than it needs to be. You may not be worried, but your selfish behaviour could lead to you infecting someone else, who may end up dead.

All those with the selfish mentality mentioned above, and were having a go at all the idiots over the hoarding of TP etc, you are just as selfish and idiotic as the selfish idiots who were/are doing the hoarding!

If we all do our best, by doing everything we can to stop the spread, things can return to "normal" sooner. If we keep going like we are, this sh!t will only get worse. So please people, we all need to stop being selfish, and stop behaving like idiots. We can see this through much quicker if we do.

We have the proof of what happens if we don't act. Let's all do our part to make sure we don't get there.

Geez. Morrison has just announced 14 day isolation for anyone flying into Aus as of midnight tonight.
I’m sitting in NZ hoping he was going to give at least a few days notice like the NZ PM did, as have flights booked to Sydney for five nights on thrusday, then off to WA for a four week contract. No more flights leave NZ for Aus at this time to make the cut off.
Guess I’ll be looking for a job tomorrow in NZ until this BS blows over

Gathering of 500 or more people is banned. The average university, TAFE, high school, etc has more than 500 students. But "Closing schools would make this worse." ??

Even the number of 500 is questionable.

Why 500? 300 are immune?

Who is going to count?

If they were serious police should be given access to immigration information.

Do random spot checks of recent arrivals. Call their work, drop by their home, check school attendance etc. Any people stopped by police for whatever reason cross referenced against the list.

Anyone caught flouting the rule fined. If they are showing symptoms then fined harder and monitored.

Softly softly approach won't work.

Don't count your chickens. Its quite possible there will be a second wave when they lift the lockdown.

And what good is China reopening when the rest of the world is closing...

China is getting back to business. People are back on the streets. The reason they (and other Asian countries like S.Korea, Singapore, Vietnam for eg) have been able to beat this virus in a quick(ish) manner is due to the extreme measures they have taken and implemented.

If anyone has seen the videos on social media, it was military like armies of cleaning staff, sanitizing, disinfecting, etc. The procedures and methods they used would not be acceptable in a western country like Australia. It would not go down well with the litigation society that we are.

For that very reason, we need to be much more proactive in containing and eliminating this ****. Because we cannot do what China, S. Korea are doing to get rid of this virus. We have to be more careful - and what would seem like extreme measure to most, have to be taken. Australia needs to go into full lockdown mode asap. If not, just watch the number increase sharply over the next few weeks. Italy for example, went from 200 cases to over 17'500 cases in just 20 days.

Yeap I think we are going to wait until April and jump in, many reports still stating its going to take some time to fully get over all this so as much as I want to jump now I am OK with modest long term gains by not taking the plunge in March.

this relates to what i was saying about testing, the Koreans have tested well, and kept number down. however , in third world countries, i,m imaging poor testing abilities, maybe this will leed to a higher dead/population rate.
even here in Australia there is limited testing.

Most likely, although authorities are talking of charging anyone who breaches, if they manage to catch them.

Cannot find any info of what those arriving into Aus have to do, it seems like a broad announcement... Are people to isolate in that city they land, or are they allowed to transfer to domestic terminal and take one or two domestic flights to where they are going to isolate to (defeats the purpose).
