Apart from Thailand, Ford no longer has any manufacturing plants in this part of the world and Ford of Thailand only sells the Mustang, Everest and Ranger.

The Puma is currently only built in Romania, which would seem like a cheaper location to build cars, but then it's the logistics from Eastern Europe to Australia. And if you believe Hyundai and Kia in Australia, it doesn't make sense to import cars from that part of the world. And would a FTA with Europe make any difference?

Wouldn't it be great if Ford opened up a manufacturing plant in Australia that made a wide variety of vehicles for our part of the world. Many models are now built on common platforms so the range is there.

Not sure? But going what they advertise on their site, they seem to have a more diverse range of Fords than most other Asian markets, except China.

They still have the old Fiesta hatch, the Aussie developed Ford Escort sedan, New Focus sedan and hatch, facelifted Mondeo hatch and wagon and the Mustang rounding out their passenger car lineup. They also have the Ecosport and Kuga (Escape), Ranger and Transit Tourneo.

Ford used to build just about everything they sold in Taiwan, but I can't find anything that says this is still the case?

Indications on the various motoring websites are that will be highly content loaded. It will not compete with Cx3.
It’s pricing mark will be Cx30 levels 30k plus.
Ford obviously still following their price it high sell 150 a month strategy.

On an off topic note Ford Global barely broke even last year reported in USA on Tuesday.

I had a good look over 2 of these a little while ago, and they are light years ahead of the rubbish Ecosport. They look bigger than you'd think too. Luggage space in the back is quite large.

Price won't be released till closer to launch in the 2nd half of the year.

I know the argument will be that spec for spec the Puma is decent value when compared to its competitors, but without a true lower priced entry model, how many potential customers will automatically not consider it because the starting price is 30k.

This is more proof that Ford Australia are really only interested in selling Rangers and the odd Mustang. So selling less at a higher price is a much better business case it seems these days. Years gone by, if they couldn't sell 4,000-6000 units a year, that's when the business case didn't make sense.

Puma is meant to be a Mazda CX3 competitor, but it's priced like a Mazda CX-30? A much bigger car. It doesn't matter what we think about this, most people will see this as a bad thing and will go for the Mazda. Looks like Ford will be happy selling 150 a month at best. If it does better, I'll happily eat my words.

Up to 180 of its 400 UK dealers........

Ford is marginalising sales in UK for a future reason to exit RHD UK.

Nah .. It's all about the extra profit ford will make on the 200 a month at 30 grand .. Remember as we keep getting told, they are chasing a bigger profit margin on less sales at a time people are tightening their belts and are looking for value to their dollar.!

Is this fact? It could just be that Ford are reducing their dealer network in line with a declining market and Ford's own declining market share in the UK? But clearing out almost half their dealers, is a little harsh!

The Puma ST Line V is $35,540. Escape ST starts at that price. As AdamGhiaz said"price needs to start at $25k." As Eurotrash said " to get people in the doors." Ford price as a premium product, its not
Audi or BMW etc quality. Priced right, it should sell.

The pricing is interesting. The top model undercuts the top Mazda CX3. But the entry point is much higher.

Ford again not bothering with an entry point model, just higher spec, more profitable models. Still should have priced the lower spec model at least 2-3 k cheaper.

But profit is all that matters now. If they can't sell something with a nice profit margin, they won't bring it in. Simple as that. Right or wrong, it's the reality.

How many people actually buy entry level models, though? If there are stats on the breakdown of which models are the biggest sellers, it'd be interesting to look at.

These days I hardly see any base model cars around. Most are mid range, some are top of the line, but very rarely do I see an entry level model, except for fleet special cars like the Corolla and Camry.

Very true, but the lower entry price gets them in the door, then any salesman worth his salt will up sell them to the higher spec cars.

The funniest thing was when I took mum to buy her new Focus, she was banging on about how she’d struggle to afford the Trend (LZ) and maybe she shouldn’t get it. She got in, took it for a drive but still wasn’t sure she could do it. Then she spotted the Sport sitting two cars down and fell in love with it then and there. All of a sudden she didn’t care that it cost a couple of grand more, she’d manage just fine. Salesman didn’t have to do a thing!
