F3 Reynard 913 with the 2 litre conversion. Apparently similar power as the 1.6 but cheaper to rebuild. $4k instead of $15+

Same reason I am going 6 litre. BTW I just found out 5 minutes ago another guy Alex is doing the V8 swap in his race RX7 as well. And I know a third guy as well but he is waiting to see what hurdles we have to jump..

I thought if I didn't kill myself then my wife would kill me (when she finds out that I am in an openwheeler)

PS On my first laps I was so glad that the Mazda has no electronic helpers, no power booster, no ABS etc and runs slicks. It wasn't as alien as some might think. Kinda prepared me a little.

Was that Oran Park. Af2 record there is 1:05 and that is in a Cheetah. You haven't thought of ditching the Mazda and getting a Formula 2 or 3?

I think my car will be some time yet. In the last 18 months I have got engaged, married and had a child (all in the correct order!), become the manager of my workplace, started cycle racing and got myself on the committee of my cycling club committee.

Yeah OP GP Track . Awesome track. Shame it is going.

Corrupt and stupid State Government rezoned it all for housing without any infrastructure. Will create more chaos on M5 than there is now. If that's possible.

Anyhow its a real shame to see one of the GREAT tracks go.

Why don't they sell blocks of land that back on to the track for revheads like us. The cars only run 9am to 5pm anyway., And they make great sounds. its not not noise to enthusiasts like us. Just beautiful music and free entertainment off the back deck.

There is one country town that has properties backing on to its airport and each house can have a hanger.

Anyway enough of my ranting. The 1.13 (See Natsoft) was the 4th quickest car in the race and in the next race I started ahead of the Mosler and some other serious cars. Only trouble was I scared myself nearly to death.

Warrick and his Dad are awesome people. I sincerely thank them!

Great to hear someone is getting the order correct. It will affect your childrens lives in a nice way if you keep making decisions like those. Sounds like you are leading a busy but blessed life mate.

The Mazda is going to L98 V8 with T56. I just bought the T56 and am negotiating on an engine.

A big open wheeler is too fast for me.

I got the photos.

I am a novice but I was the envy of a few mates with who are very experienced racers.

AND I will never forget the experience but I will leave it for the young guys.

Yes the Robertsons are very genuine people. They gave me a drive of one of their mk7s at Wakefield a while back, but unfortunately the foam in the fuel tank had started to degrade and blocked up the fuel filter.

You don't think you would get used to the openwheeler? I love how no-nonsense they are. If a part/item isn't absolutely necessary it isn't on these cars. That's why a car like mine only weighs 400kg and does lap times equivelent to a V8Supercar with a 1.6 litre n/a engine from the 70's.

No argument form me there but try telling my wife that I am safe in one. She likes plenty of steel around me.

They tell me the CF capsule (is that what they call it?) is safe but she would need some convincing.

Formula cars
(+)
-Lighter, so usually have less kinetic energy.
-Lighter with big wings and wheels so shed speed faster.
-Are specifically designed with racing and safety in mind.
-Suspension, wings etc designed to be shed, thus reducing the amount of energy passed through to the driver. They also have crushable compartments.
-Have excellent restraint of the driver.
-Drivers are usually more carefull as they don't have the mindset that they are in a safe steel cocoon.
-Anecdotally experience far fewer fatalities.
-Injuries more likely to be bruises as opposed to neck injuries in tin tops.

Thank you everybody for the input.

I have decided on the L98 6 litre with a T56 driving thru the current Kaaz 4.3 diff for now.

I have the new T56 in the garage.

A new L98 is on the way from Gilmore. Thanks Karl. Plan is to do mild cam, valve springs, CM pushrods and possibly lifter upgrade. Apparently they already have flat top pistons and roller rockers. Dry sumped. ANY ADVICE ON LSx WORKSHOP IN SYDNEY OR MODS PLANNED WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

The Hinson Supercars kit has been paid for and is being manufactured in Alabama now.

Today the Mazda will be stripped of the ****el stuff. Lucky I spelt that right.

I will weigh the car today on a public weighbridge and do the same once the 6.0 litre conversion is finished.

Plan is to run it in trackday/private practice testing, then supersprints, Bathurst FOSC 2010, Winton/Queensland Raceway/Wakefield SuperTT category, MRA series, iRace if they get tracks in 2010 and last but definitley not least CAMS Sports Sedans O 2L - obviously only state level and it will not be all that competitive with 6.0 lightweight spaceframe cars but who cares?

It's just for F U N.

Weighed the Mazda yesterday on Public Weighbridge

Even though it is race stripped it came in at 1267KG with no fuel in cell but 2.5 litres in lines and surge tank

Heavier than I thought it would be and more than 70kg heavier than when I last weighed it at Eastern Creek.

It has had some extra bars in the cage added receently and is currently running 2 seats (long story) and has had some other weight gaining things added for endruros.

It will be interesting to weigh it when the V8 goes in!

I am hoping for no more than an extra 25 kg.

Engine is apparently about 15kgs more than rotary but by the time you add the dry sump system with much larger oil capacity, pumps etc and a heavier T56. etc so who knows where it will end up.

Hopefully it is NOT TOO HEAVY.

1300kg would kinda freak me out.

Anyone want to make some predictions on weight??

the dry sump around three kg same as the wet sump.
how ever the wet sump takes 8 lt of oil, the dry system is up to you on resivour size.

nice to know that it's all working out for you. The RX7 S4 that I was talking about was the silver Centreline Suspension one, I think that a guy with the surnam Urqhart built up something similar. I dont know too much about SS and who the players are in it.

Woops! maybe they do. I had a look at some old photos I'd taken of it in their workshop with the engine out and for some reason assumed that it was a 4 cylinder. Thanks for the correction.

Yeah it was a 913 I got to race recently but like I said in another thread you have no chance of converting my wife to have a husband who drives an open wheeler.

Breaking news.

Gerry sold his 24hr Nurburgring car back to Ric this afternoon.

He is going to import an RX-7 for the V8 conversion.

So that makes three RX-7 V8's in the build process. Steve, Alex and Gerry.

Maybe I will have some help getting these guys to block you somehow Liam when I come to Winton!

I have definitely given up.

Besides, once you get used to the grunt of a good V8 you would have to get something like a Lola T332 and I can't picture you getting that one past your wife, especially if she happens to here about the Lola Limp.
