By Devereuax's talk... it can be assumed that Ford and Holden can't be knocked off the established large car perch. But Ford needs to win back sales.

Well, in a way they can't, the segment is shrinking, but there is not alot of compeating cars in that segment. It's all but a two horse race, the 300c is about the only true competitor...besides some 100K + euros...

The euros have no hope, too expensive. Chrysler could shake things up. Falcon needs an export.

Nah was talking to a mate who sat in a vf yesterday At the Holden plant and was telling me about it then he mentioned that rumour after

would holden have even finished paying of the BILLION dollar baby ve costs yet. Plus whatever they have spent along the way with model upgrades.

I could never work out how they needed a billion and ford did the BA for 500mill. Thats a MASSIVE diff

VE was a clean sheet design because of how outdated VZ was. The only thing that carried over was some drivetrain I think.

BA still had the AU shell plus a couple of carry over things. The AU was 700 mil only 4 years before BA.

ZETA was the billion dollar baby. A cost shared by GM globally. Camaro and Caprice sales in the US, China and Korea helped that along with local commodore.
I doubt you'll see an SUV. The competition is far too fierce. If you look at the top 10 selling cars how many are SUV's?

It was supposed to be spread across a wide range of cars, but GM only did the Camaro and left Holden holding the bag for the cost.

Part of the reason the VE is still on sale now and not a replacement. It was supposed to be paid for with Zeta based Impala's and Buicks and what not, but because these never came to fruition the Zeta platform became a cost burden on Holden, made even worse by dropping sales.

The original intention was for the whole Zeta platform to be replaced after 7 years, so in theory a whole new platform for the Commodore was supposed to be released next year, instead Holden will only just get around to giving it its first mid-cycle update. Its put them way behind where the originally planned to be.

It was actually $800 million, they never actually released the cost to the public and the motoring hacks just assumed what it was, but I can tell you the whole project cost was 800.

If BA was 500 then an all new body, interior, front suspension etc is going to cost a lot more than that.

Next Commodore could be based on Alpha, Zeta II or Omega.

I am betting Zeta II, too much work and money is going into Zeta for the VF to last one model cycle. However this would mean going against the rumours that the next Commodore will be more VT sized.


Edit: scratch that, reading further Devareux has said that Holden will be using global platforms with their new cars and that 'Zeta isn't global'. Therefore smaller Alpha will be the one they pick if they stay RWD.

I think that's a dead giveaway as to which model brings in the gravy, whatever replaces Commodore better be profitable.
I'm actually surprised that they picked the Cruze over Captiva or even Equinox as a second local product, SUVs are more profitable.

I don't think Cruze has been the mecca car or savior Holden thought it would be and I doubt Cruze II will do much better..
Equinox (LWB Captiva) with diesel and the SIDI 3.6 V6 would be a formidable vehicle, more so than Captiva..uggh that name..

Spot on, makes Ford look like geniuses for going down the high-profit Territory path...
